Red Kite flies through

30th April 2025 – warm and sunny/hazy/calm
Offshore
Early morning observations over the calm sea (0600-0700) provided 260 Sandwich Tern, 67 Gannet, 30 Common Scoter, 5 Arctic Tern, 2 Little Tern and a Manx Shearwater. In addition, the large flock of Common Scoter remains in the mouth of the bay with 25,000 birds now present.
Grounded Migrants
Totals of 7 Wheatear, 3 Willow Warbler and single Grasshopper Warbler and Chiffchaff were seen were seen.
Diurnal Migration
A Red Kite drifted north over the island and 160 Pink-footed Geese flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 2 Greenshank and a Green Sandpiper.
Breeding Birds
Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler numbers continue to build across breeding sites.
Butterflies and Moths
The moth trap totals were again dominated by Brown Silver-line along with the first Least Black Arches and Chinese Character of the year. The first Red Admiral of the year was seen.

Huge Common Scoter build up

29th April 2025 – warm and sunny/calm
Offshore
A check of the sea (0630-0730) provided 200 Sandwich Tern, 105 Common Scoter, 80 Gannet, 16 Kittiwake, 9 Red-throated Diver, 5 Manx Shearwater, 4 Little Tern and 4 Shag. In addition, a calm sea revealed the presence of a huge flock of 20000 Common Scoter assembled in the mouth of the bay.
Grounded Migrants
A Whinchat was amongst 21 Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 300 Pink-footed Goose flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 56 Whimbrel and single Greenshank and Common Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow remains.
Butterflies and Moths
The moth trap numbers were dominated by 44 Brown Silver-line along with the first Green Carpet of the year.

Velvet Scoter

28th April 2025 – overcast start then sunny spells SW2/4
Offshore
A check of the sea (0615-0715) provided 5220 Common Scoter, 328 Sandwich Tern, 127 Gannet, 15 Guillemot, 6 Red-throated Diver, 5 Arctic Tern, 5 Kittiwake, 2 Manx Shearwater and single Velvet Scoter, Little Tern and Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Totals of 15 Wheatear and single White Wagtail, Blackcap and Willow Warbler were logged.
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 40 Pink-footed Goose flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Lingering wildfowl involved 11 Teal, 3 Wigeon, 17 dark-bellied Brent Goose and 5 pale-bellied Brent Goose Waders were more prominent and included 3,120 Knot, 2,414 Oystercatcher, 2,180 Dunlin, 282 Sanderling, 172 Whimbrel, 126 Turnstone, 99 Ringed Plover, 45 Grey Plover, 21 Bar-tailed Godwit, 3 Golden Plover and 3 Greenshank.
Ringing
A colour-ringed Bar-tailed Godwit had been ringed on passage at Revtangen, Norway on 21st August 2024

The moth trap numbers were dominated by Brown Silver-line and Black-headed Conch along with the first Dog’s Tooth of the year.

Red-necked Grebe and Yellowhammer

27th April 2025 – overcast start then sunny spells S2/3
Offshore
Early morning observations over the sea (0645-0745) were highlighted by a summer-plumaged Red-necked Grebe. Also seen were 220 Sandwich Tern, 110 Common Scoter, 75 Gannet, 51 Manx Shearwater, 20 Guillemot, 16 Red-throated Diver, 13 Little Tern, 5 Arctic Tern, 3 Kittiwake and 2 Red-breasted Merganser. In addition, the large flock of Common Scoter remains in the mouth of the bay.
Grounded Migrants
A Whinchat was amongst 23 Wheatear and a male Yellowhammer were seen.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 300 Pink-footed Goose flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 21 Whimbrel and 3 Greenshank. Just 4 pale-bellied and a dark-bellied Brent Goose were logged.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow remains and a Peregrine was the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
The moth trap attracted 58 moths of 15 species with Chamomile Shark, Ruby Tiger, Common Carpet and Bright-line Brown-eye new for the year.

Whimbrel influx

26th April 2025 – overcast/murk/early drizzle SE3/4

A check of the sea (0615-0715) provided 262 Sandwich Tern, 88 Common Scoter, 15 Gannet, 14 Little Tern, 13 Red-throated Diver, 5 Guillemot, 4 Manx Shearwater and an Arctic Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Totals of 3 Willow Warbler and 3 Wheatear were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Again a few Swallows trickled flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 119 Whimbrel and 2 Greenshank while 17 dark-bellied and 4 pale-bellied Brent Goose remain.

Hooded Crow double

25th April 2025 – sunny spells E2/3

Early morning observations over the sea (0630-0730) revealed 230 Sandwich Tern, 62 Gannet, 17 Red-throated Diver, 17 Guillemot, 12 Little Tern, 2 Arctic Tern, 2 Manx Shearwater and a Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to 3 Wheatear and a solitary Willow Warbler and White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 10 Pink-footed Geese headed north and the first House Martin flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 12 Whimbrel.

The long-staying Hooded Crow remains and was joined by a second bird.
Breeding Birds
The first Lapwing and Mallard chicks have emerged and 6 Grasshopper Warbler and several Stonechat are now holding territories.

First Reed Warbler arrives

A check of the sea (0630-0730) provided 160 Sandwich Tern, 82 Common Scoter, 40 Gannet, 12 Guillemot, 11 Kittiwake, 8 Red-throated Diver, 4 Manx Shearwater and 2 Puffin.
Grounded Migrants
Totals of 5 Willow Warbler and 4 Wheatear were logged and the first Reed Warbler of the year appeared.
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 40 Pink-footed Geese headed north and a few Swallows trickled flew through.

Early morning observations over the sea (0630-0730) revealed 220 Sandwich Tern, 170 Common Scoter, 30 Guillemot, 30 Gannet, 10 Red-breasted Merganser, 7 Red-throated Diver, 3 Manx Shearwater, 3 Little Tern, 2 Arctic Tern and a Puffin.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to a solitary Chiffchaff.

Waders included 3 Whimbrel.

Great Northern Divers and more Puffins

22nd April 2025 – sunny spells V1/3
Offshore
A check of the sea (0645-0745) produced 310 Common Scoter, 50 Gannet, 45 Sandwich Tern, 12 Guillemot, 5 Red-breasted Merganser, 5 Puffin, 5 Little Tern, 3 Manx Shearwater, 2 Arctic Tern, 2 Great Northern Diver, 2 Red-throated Diver and a Sag. In addition, raft of 3000 Common Scoter were over the mouth of the bay.
Grounded Migrants
Totals of 19 Wheatear, 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Whitethroat and 2 Blackcap were logged along with the first Lesser Whitethroat of the year.
Diurnal Migration
Just 10 Swallow flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 500 Dunlin and 2 Whimbrel.

First Puffins appear

21st April 2025 – overcast/rain soon E1/2

Early morning observations over the sea (0600-0730) revealed 1465 Common Scoter, 252 Sandwich, 121 Gannet, 50 Red-throated Diver, 11 Guillemot, 9 Red-breasted Merganser, 6 Manx Shearwater and 2 Puffin.
Grounded Migrants
Sightings were limited to 2 Willow Warbler and single Grasshopper Warbler, Blackcap and Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 1000 Pink-footed Geese headed north.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included single Black-tailed Godwit and Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains.
Butterflies and Moths
The moth trap attracted Dark Swordgrass, Silver Y and Diamond-backed Moth.

Velvet Scoter, Arctic Tern, Yellow Wagtail and Whinchat

20th April 2025 – overcast/then sunny E2/3

A check of the sea (0630-0730) produced 1350 Common Scoter, 60 Sandwich Tern, 36 Gannet, 12 Guillemot, 4 Red-throated Diver, 2 Manx Shearwater, 2 Razorbill and 2 Shag. However, the highlights were 2 Velvet Scoter and the first 4 Arctic Tern of the year. Later in the mouth of the bay was an additional raft of 2000 Common Scoter and 2 Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
A diverse selection included 7 Wheatear, 3 Sedge Warbler, 3 Blackcap, 2 Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Willow Warbler and 2 Whinchat – the latter the first of the year.
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 140 Pink-footed Geese headed north and 2 Siskin and single Tree Pipit and Yellow Wagtail added variety – the latter was the first of the year.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included a Whimbrel.

Observations over the sea (0700-0830) revealed 230 Common Scoter, 205 Sandwich Tern, 13 Red-throated Diver, 12 Gannet, 8 Guillemot, 6 Manx Shearwater, 5 Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Razorbill and an Arctic Skua.

Waders included 9 Whimbrel.

Tree Pipit flies through

17th April 2025 – bright and sunny after overcast start W3/4

A check of the sea (0700-0800) produced 147 Common Scoter, 93 Sandwich Tern, 44 Gannet, 15 Kittiwake, 13 Red-throated Diver, 9 Manx Shearwater, 7 Red-breasted Merganser, 7 Guillemot and 2 Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Totals of 12 White Wagtail, 11 Blackcap, 8 Wheatear, 8 Willow Warbler and single Whitethroat and Chiffchaff were logged.
Diurnal Migration
A Tree Pipit flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 6 Whimbrel and a Common Sandpiper.
Breeding Birds
Warbler numbers are also starting to build in the island’s breeding habitat with 21 Willow Warbler, 7 Chiffchaff, 5 Whitethroat, 5 Grasshopper Warbler, 4 Sedge Warbler and 3 Blackcap logged.

The long-staying Hooded Crow remains and 2 Water Rail were logged. The Tawny Owl put in another appearance.

Observations over the sea (0630-0730) revealed 100 Sandwich Tern, 50 Common Scoter, 15 Gannet, 11 Guillemot, 10 Red-throated Diver, 10 Razorbill, 5 Red-breasted Merganser, 4 Shag and 2 Arctic Skua.

A flock of 20 White Wagtail was logged.

Waders included 70 Bar-tailed Godwit.

A check of the sea early morning produced 141 Sandwich Tern, 108 Guillemot, 78 Common Scoter, 24 Red-throated Diver, 9 Shag, 8 Razorbill, 5 Manx Shearwater and 2 Arctic Skua. In addition, a large flock of Common Scoter was assembled over the mouth of the bay

Observations over the sea (0615-0815) revealed 500 Common Scoter, 57 Gannet, 41 Sandwich Tern, 26 Guillemot, 18 Red-throated Diver, 4 Manx Shearwater, 3 Kittiwake, 3 Little Tern, 3 Razorbill and 2 Red-breasted Merganser.

Totals of 160 Pink-footed Goose and single Swallow and Redpoll flew through.

A check of the sea early morning produced 65 Sandwich Tern, 46 Common Scoter, 22 Gannet, 21 Kittiwake, 12 Guillemot, 7 Razorbill, 4 Shag and 4 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
The first Grasshopper Warbler and Sedge Warbler have arrived in breeding habitat and grounded migrants involved 6 Wheatear, 6 Willow Warbler and single Chiffchaff and Blackcap.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 330 light-bellied birds and waders included 500 Golden Plover, 41 Bar-tailed Godwit and 8 Whimbrel.

Ring Ouzel and Cuckoo

12th April 2025 – sunny spells ESE2/4

A check of the sea revealed 60 Sandwich Tern, 44 Common Scoter, 23 Kittiwake, 14 Gannet, 14 Guillemot, 4 Red-breasted Merganser, 4 Red-throated Diver and 4 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Highlights involved the first Ring Ouzel and Cuckoo of the year amongst 12 Wheatear, 6 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap and a Fieldfare.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 330 Pink-footed Geese flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 100 light-bellied birds and waders included 480 Golden Plover and 19 Snipe.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow was joined by a second individual.

Redstart, Whitethroat and Whimbrel

A small fall of migrants produced 10 Willow Warbler, 8 Blackcap, 5 Wheatear, 2 Chiffchaff and single Redstart, Whitethroat, Fieldfare and Redwing.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 10 Meadow Pipit was logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 310 Golden Plover and a Whimbrel – the latter the first of the year.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow remains and a Water Rail was the best of the rest.

Observations over the sea revealed 80 Common Scoter, 35 Sandwich Tern, 12 Kittiwake, 12 Gannet, 6 Red-throated Diver, 5 Shag, 3 Red-breasted Merganser and 2 Guillemot.

Limited to 7 Wheatear, 2 White Wagtail, 2 Blackcap, 2 Willow Warbler and a Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 30 Meadow Pipit was logged.

There are now 2 Coot and waders included 300 Knot and a Purple Sandpiper.

Observations over the sea revealed 110 Sandwich Tern, 100 Common Scoter, 22 Kittiwake, 15 Red-throated Diver, 14 Gannet and 2 Shag.

Limited to 5 White Wagtail, 3 Willow Warbler, 2 Wheatear and a Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 40 Meadow Pipit, 2 Swallow and a Sand Martin were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Coot remains and waders included 550 Golden Plover and the first Common Sandpiper of the year.

The long-staying Hooded Crow remains and a Buzzard hunted the island.

Great White Egret

Early morning observations over the sea revealed 105 Common Scoter, 42 Sandwich Tern, 24 Gannet, 7 Red-throated Diver, 2 Shag nd 2 Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to a single Willow Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 160 Pink-footed Goose and single Swallow and Redpoll flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 300 Knot and 250 Golden Plover.
Miscellaneous
A Great White Egret was the highlight of the day, while the Hooded Crow remains.

Cetti’s Warbler remains

7th April 2025 – bright and sunny ESE2/3

Observations over the sea revealed 90 Common Scoter, 30 Sandwich Tern, 12 Gannet, 4 Shag, 2 Red-throated Diver and a Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler and 2 Mistle Thrush.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 41 Pink-footed Goose, 10 Meadow Pipit, 3 Swallow and 2 Sand Martin were logged.
Miscellaneous
At least one Cetti’s Warbler remains along with the long-staying Hooded Crow.

Observations over the sea revealed 40 Sandwich Tern, 21 Gannet, 17 Common Scoter, 5Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Red-throated Diver and 2 Shag.

Limited to 3 Wheatear, 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler and a Blackcap.

Totals of 30 Meadow Pipit, 28 Pink-footed Goose, 12 Sand Martin and single Swallow and Redpoll were logged.

Observations over the sea revealed 20 Sandwich Tern, 17 Common Scoter, 9 Gannet, 6 Red-throated Diver, 6 Guillemot and 2 Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to a Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 300 Meadow Pipit and a Siskin were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A Coot was seen – the first and perhaps only record of the year for what is now a rare species on the island.

The Hooded Crow remains and the islands “woodland” produced 12 Chiffchaff, 5 Willow Warbler and 4 Jay.

Observations over the sea revealed 30 Sandwich Tern, 24 Common Scoter, 14 Gannet, 10 Red-throated Diver and 3 Red-breasted Merganser.

Limited to 6 Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 100 Meadow Pipit, 56 Jackdaw, 8 Sand Martin and single Swallow and Redpoll were logged.

A Black-tailed Godwit was seen.

Mass Sandwich Tern arrival

Observations over the sea revealed 515 Sandwich Tern, 52 Common Scoter, 21 Guillemot, 17 Gannet, 14 Razorbill, 5 Red-throated Diver, 4 Kittiwake and 2 Red-breasted Merganser.

Limited to 4 Wheatear, 3 White Wagtail and 2 Willow Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 25 Pink-footed Goose, 22 Meadow Pipit and single Redpoll and Whooper Swan were logged.
