Grounded Migrants
An increase over recent days saw 16 Song Thrush, 16 Blackbird, 15 Redwing, 2 Fieldfare and 2 Goldcrest grounded in the daily recording area.
Diurnal Migration
A bright start saw birds again on the move from the crack of dawn and early morning totals included 570 Jackdaw, 450 Meadow Pipit, 62 Redwing, 60 Fieldfare, 53 Carrion Crow, 20 Song Thrush, 20 Skylark, 15 Tree Sparrow, 10 Chaffinch, 10 alba Wagtail, 8 Whooper Swan, 4 Grey Wagtail and single Mistle Thrush and Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
At least 9 Greenshank and 13 Black-tailed Godwit were seen along with large numbers of Redshank.
Miscellaneous
The group of 4 Long-tailed Tit and at least one Merlin remain and another or perhaps the same Great Spotted Woodpecker was seen. A small group of 15 Twite were logged.

28th October 2007 - early rain then sunny spells W3/4
Offshore
Early morning sightings (0800-0900hrs) were limited to 15 Common Scoter, 7 Razorbill and a Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A few thrushes comprising 7 Song Thrush, 6 Blackbird and a Redwing were seen along with single Goldcrest and White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
Another Great Spotted Woodpecker led sightings which also included 110 Starling, 15 Skylark, 3 Siskin, 3 Redpoll and a White Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 720 Shelduck were logged and 2 Black-tailed Godwit were seen.
Miscellaneous
At least one Water Rail and 30 Twite remain on the island.
Butterflies
Both Small Copper and Peacock are still on the wing.

Flyover Lapland Bunting

27th October 2007 - misty start then overcast/drizzle S1/2/3/4
Rarities
A Lapland Bunting announced its presence as it flew along the western shoreline.
Offshore
Just 2 Shag and a solitary Gannet were logged.
Grounded Migrants
The calm and misty start produced a few more birds than of late with an apparent influx of Stonechat producing at least 18 birds, also seen were 14 Goldcrest, 12 Blackbird, 5 Song Thrush and single Blackcap and Redwing.
Diurnal Migration
A few species continue to trickle through with 430 Starling, 18 Meadow Pipit, 10 Chaffinch, 10 Fieldfare, 8 Redwing, 7 alba Wagtail, 4 Skylark, 3 Grey Wagtail, 3 Siskin and a Mistle Thrush logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Singles of Black-tailed Godwit and Purple Sandpiper were seen.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin stalked a small flock of 16 Twite.

Velvet Scoter leads offshore sightings

26th October 2007 - overcast/murky S5
Offshore
A drake Velvet Scoter was the pick of offshore sightings although a steady passage of Razorbill over the tide provided a total of 1290 birds. Other sightings involved 43 Common Scoter, 20 Gannet, 12 Guillemot, 7 Shag and a Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Again little evidence of newly grounded birds with just 2 Song Thrush and single Fieldfare, Redwing, Chiffchaff and Goldcrest logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 1820 Wigeon were logged along with 20 Pintail, 15 Greenshank and a Spotted Redshank.
Miscellaneous
Several Merlin and at least 6 Little Egret remain.
Mammals
Two Harbour Porpoise were offshore.

Little Egret numbers continue to build

25th October 2007 - overcast NE1/2
Grounded Migrants
Totals included 6 Redwing, 5 Song Thrush, 2 Chiffchaff and a single Goldcrest while in excess of 100 Blackbird were scattered across the island - surely including some migrants.
Diurnal Migration
No coordinated observations were undertaken, however, 100 Pink-footed Geese, 20 Greenfinch, 10 Skylark, 2 Whooper Swan, 2 Grey Wagtail and singles of Swallow, Fieldfare, Brambling, Redpoll and Twite were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A group of 4 pale-bellied Brent Geese were new in.
Miscellaneous
A total of 9 Little Egret were to be found across the island's salt marshes and tidal pools. A single Merlin was seen.

Jackdaws continue to dominate the skies

24th October 2007 - bright and sunny E3/2/1
Offshore
An Arctic Tern proved the highlight with sightings over the tide otherwise limited to 58 Razorbill, 16 Common Scoter, 8 Shag, 5 Gannet and 3 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Birds continue to remain scarce with just 4 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush and single Redwing, Chiffchaff and Goldcrest logged.
Diurnal Migration
Jackdaws again darkened the skies with a huge flock of 2200 birds lingering over the island throughout the morning. Other records included 870 Starling, 147 Pink-footed Goose, 80 Linnet, 57 Skylark, 52 Meadow Pipit, 22 alba Wagtail, 20 Carrion Crow, 14 Tree Sparrow, 8 Redpoll, 7 Whooper Swan, 5 Siskin and single Grey Wagtail, Rock Pipit, Mistle Thrush and Twite.
Miscellaneous
Although unable to pick off yesterdays Razorbills a Peregrine was more successful when targeting the Jackdaw flock. At least 4 Little Egret remain amongst the tidal pools.
Butterflies
A total of 10 Red Admiral and a Small Copper were logged.
Dragonflies
A late Common Darter was seen.

Richard's Pipit continues to remain elusive

Rarities
The vocal Richard's Pipit put in a brief appearance, giving good flight views mid-morning, but generally continues to prove elusive.
Offshore
Observations over the falling tide (0900-1300hrs) provided 445 Razorbill, 15 Common Scoter, 5 Gannet, 2 Shag and single Red-throated Diver and Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
Remaining quiet with just 3 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush and single Redwing, Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Goldcrest logged.
Diurnal Migration
Sightings were dominated by four large flocks of Jackdaw, all in the air together, which comprised 2020 birds. Other records included 410 Starling, 70 Meadow Pipit, 21 Linnet, 21 Skylark, 20 Greenfinch, 19 Carrion Crow, 17 Pink-footed Goose, 12 Twite, 9 alba Wagtail, 5 Siskin, 4 Whooper Swan, 3 Fieldfare, 3 Swallow and a Grey Wagtail.
Miscellaneous
A group of 8 Little Egret fed amongst the tidal pools and a Peregrine unsuccessfully hunted the groups of migrating Razorbill moving offshore.

There a still a few Red Admiral on the wing.

Observations (0900-1300) produced 150 Razorbill, 82 Common Scoter, 6 Gannet, 3 Shag, 2 Guillemot and a Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Another very quiet day with just 5 Blackbird, 3 Redwing and a Goldcrest logged.
Diurnal Migration
No coordinated count was undertaken and sightings were limited to 550 Jackdaw, 130 Pink-footed Goose, 50 Starling, 7 alba Wagtail and a Redpoll.
Miscellaneous
At least 6 Little Egret and a Water Rail remain.

Late Arctic Terns continue to be seen

Two Arctic Tern were seen and at least 6 Shag remain. Other sightings included small numbers of Common Scoter and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Thrushes continue to prevail with 15 Blackbird, 3 Redwing, 2 Fieldfare and a Song Thrush logged along with 3 Blackcap and 2 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Birds continue to move through with 500 Jackdaw, 375 Starling, 28 Siskin, 24 Skylark, 20 Meadow Pipit, 20 Greenfinch, 11 alba Wagtail, 4 Twite, 3 Redpoll, 2 Redwing and a Rock Pipit amongst today's sightings.
Miscellaneous
At least 2 Little Egret and several Water Rail remain. A single Merlin was logged.

A second Richard's Pipit of the autumn!

What probably the second Richard's Pipit of the autumn flew through amongst small numbers of Meadow Pipit.
Offshore
At least 7 Shag and 3 Arctic Tern were seen. Other sightings involved small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Common Scoter and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
A few more birds than of late with 20 Blackbird, 18 Redwing, 7 Fieldfare, 3 Goldcrest and 2 Song Thrush logged.
Diurnal Migration
Birds noted prior to 1000hrs included 500 Jackdaw, 148 Starling, 60 Meadow Pipit, 43 Carrion Crow, 40 Greenfinch, 26 Skylark, 23 alba Wagtail, 20 Twite, 12 Siskin, 6 Reed Bunting, 4 Chaffinch and single Whooper Swan, Brambling and Swallow.
Miscellaneous
At least 2 Merlin and a Peregrine continue to hunt the island. The flock of 35 Twite remain.
Moths
A Large Wainscot was new for the year.

Little Gull leads offshore sightings

19th October 2007 - overcast/murky SE2/1

Observations provided 61 Common Scoter, 18 Razorbill, 9 Gannet, 5 Arctic Tern, 5 Red-throated Diver ans an adult Little Gull. At least 9 Shag continue to linger.
Grounded Migrants
Again slim pickings with just 8 Redwing, 3 Blackbird, 3 White Wagtail, 3 Song Thrush and a Goldcrest logged.
Diurnal Migration
Quieter than of late, however, 110 Starling, 55 Chaffinch, 40 Meadow Pipit, 35 Greenfinch, 12 alba Wagtail, 4 Skylark, 3 Siskin, 3 Rock Pipit, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Fieldfare, 2 Pink-footed Goose and single Whooper Swan, Brambling and Redpoll were logged.
Miscellaneous
Several Merlin and a Peregrine continue to be seen and 3 Water Rail were present.

Goosander bonus during offshore observations

18th October 2007 - sunny spells SE2/1
Offshore
At least 5 Shag remain and 3 Goosander - including 2 fine drakes - were new for the year. Thereafter sightings were limited to 70 Razorbill, 31 Common Scoter, 12 Red-throated Diver and 4 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Again little evidence of many newly grounded birds the exception being 2 Blackcap, 2 Song Thrush and single Goldcrest and Blackbird.
Diurnal Migration
Overhead passage remained strong and was highlighted by 3 Little Egret, 345 Pink-footed Goose and 45 Whooper Swan. Other sightings included 700 Jackdaw, 350 Meadow Pipit, 245 Skylark, 130 Starling, 65 Greenfinch, 60 Linnet, 34 alba Wagtail, 22 Redpoll, 18 Carrion Crow, 12 Swallow, 12 Reed Bunting, 10 Siskin, 10 Chaffinch, 4 Tree Sparrow, 3 Grey Wagtail, 3 Rock Pipit, 3 Rook and a Fieldfare.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 16 Greenshank and single Spotted Redshank and Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
The Twite flock has increased to 35 individuals, several Merlin and a Peregrine were logged, at least 2 Water Rail are present and another Great Spotted Woodpecker was seen.

Whooper Swans continue to trickle through

Early morning observations only provided a handful Common Scoter and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Grounded migrants continue to be sparse with today's meagre rations involving 5 Goldcrest, 5 Redwing, 4 Song Thrush, 4 White Wagtail, 2 Blackbird and single Blackcap and Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
Birds moving through prior to 1000hrs included 170 Jackdaw, 60 Pink-footed Goose, 60 Greenfinch, 25 Chaffinch, 23 Tree Sparrow, 20 Meadow Pipit, 15 alba Wagtail, 15 House Sparrow, 13 Siskin, 10 Whooper Swan, 7 Skylark, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Fieldfare and single Mistle Thrush and Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
A group of 7 Whooper Swan roosted on the salt marsh on the evening tide.
Miscellaneous
At least 4 Little Egret remain and twilight records included 2 Little Owl and a Barn Owl.

Black Guillemot heads offshore sightings

Morning observations (0755-0855 & 1020-1120) provided totals of 70 Razorbill, 50 Wigeon, 48 Common Scoter, 20 Gannet, 5 Red-throated Diver, 3 Guillemot, 2 Shag and single Black Guillemot, Arctic Tern, Kittiwake and Pintail.
Diurnal Migration
No coordinated observations and only a Grey Wagtail was of note.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 18 Greenshank roosted over the tide.
Miscellaneous
At least one Merlin continues to reside on the island.
Mammals
A total of 10 Grey Seal were logged along with single Hare and Stoat.

First of the wintering Twite arrive

Late morning observations (1015-1115) produced 9 Common Scoter, 7 Gannet, 4 Razorbill, 2 Red-throated Diver and single Arctic Tern and Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
Just 4 Goldcrest, 2 Fieldfare and single Blackbird, White Wagtail and Chiffchaff were logged.
Diurnal Migration
A few birds continue to move early morning, despite the unfavourable conditions, totals included 65 Greenfinch, 50 Starling, 26 Skylark, 25 alba Wagtail, 10 Meadow Pipit, 3 Swallow, 2 Rock Pipit, 2 Whooper Swan and a Siskin.
Miscellaneous
At least one Merlin remains and the first 6 Twite have returned.

At least 6 Shag remain and small numbers of Gannet and Common Scoter were logged.

Again little evidence of newly grounded birds with just 2 Redwing, 2 Goldcrest and single Chiffchaff and Song Thrush logged.

Clearer conditions saw an increase in movement overhead, totals prior to 1000hrs included 185 Linnet, 180 Meadow Pipit, 155 Greenfinch, 110 Starling, 60 Skylark, 58 Siskin, 30 alba Wagtail, 22 Redpoll, 20 Chaffinch, 15 Reed Bunting, 6 Swallow, 4 Grey Wagtail, 3 Rock Pipit and a single Brambling.
Miscellaneous
At least 5 Rock Pipit were pushed from the salt marshes at high tide and both Merlin and Water Rail continue to be recorded. There are now 8 Little Egrets and a Hooded Crow put in another appearance.

Firecrest proves to be pick of the day

13th October 2007 - overcast/mist/drizzle SE1

The group of 7 Shag were again present.
Grounded Migrants
Early mist and drizzle produced a fall of 100 Redwing before clearing conditions saw most birds depart. The fall conditions also saw a few birds scattered across the island with a Firecrest the pick of the crop although 20 Goldcrest, 4 Chiffchaff, 4 Fieldfare and 2 Song Thrush were also logged.
Diurnal Migration
Some movement was evident between the drizzle with 100 Linnet, 60 Greenfinch, 30 Meadow Pipit, 23 Siskin, 20 Skylark and 10 alba Wagtail recorded.
Miscellaneous
At least 2 Merlin and 7 Little Egret remain and a flock of 10 Long-tailed Tit were logged.

Still dank and dreary

12th October 2007 - misty,murk and drizzle W2/1
Grounded Migrants
Although 24 Robin, 23 Wren, 5 Stonechat, 3 Blackbird and single White Wagtail, Song Thrush Chiffchaff and Goldcrest were logged there was little evidence of any new arrivals.
Diurnal Migration
Early morning totals consisted of 60 Meadow Pipit, 20 alba Wagtail, 8 Redwing, 3 Grey Wagtail and 2 Siskin prior to the gloom completely closing in.
Miscellaneous
Several Merlin continue to hunt the island and 2 Little Egret were visible through the murk. At least one Water Rail remains.

11th October 2007 - overcast then dank and dreary SW4/3
Offshore
Although 7 Shag continue to linger there was little else of note visible through the gloom.
Grounded Migrants
A quiet day, the only notable sightings involved 7 Goldcrest, 4 Redwing, 4 Wheatear, 2 Blackbird and a Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
Also quiet, highlights were limited to 6 Fieldfare, 2 Siskin and a Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 650 Sanderling, 400 Knot, 5 Greenshank, 2 Purple Sandpiper and the long-staying adult Spotted Redshank.
Miscellaneous
There are now 7 Little Egret roaming the island, the flock of Long-tailed Tits and Great Spotted Woodpecker remain and at least 3 Merlin and 3 Sparrowhawk hunt the island.

Grounded migrants continue to be at a premium however 12 Goldcrest, 11 Song Thrush, 3 Redwing, 2 Blackbird, 2 Chiffchaff and a Blackcap were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Birds passing overhead prior to 0900hrs included 320 Jackdaw, 200 Meadow Pipit, 75 Pink-footed Goose, 60 Skylark, 60 Greenfinch, 26 Chaffinch, 20 alba Wagtail, 18 Tree Sparrow, 14 Siskin, 9 Redpoll, 8 Reed Bunting, 5 House Sparrow, 5 Collared Dove, 3 Swallow, 2 House Martin and 2 Grey Wagtail.
Miscellaneous
At least 4 Little Egret remain along with 2 Merlin and a Water Rail. However, a female Great Spotted Woodpecker was new in.
Butterflies
A Painted Lady and 5 Red Admiral were logged.

Richard's Pipit headlines

9th October 2007 - misty start then sunny NW1/2/3/4
Rarities
A very vocal Richard's Pipit was in the cattle fields early morning prior to the weather clearing.
Grounded Migrants
The misty start produced a few birds with 18 Redwing, 7 Song Thrush, 6 Goldcrest, 6 Stonechat, 3 Wheatear and single Blackbird and Siskin. Around 100 Skylark were flushed from the salt marsh at high tide.
Diurnal Migration
Despite the poor visibility early morning a few birds were still moving with 30 Jackdaw, 20 alba Wagtail, 15 Pink-footed Goose, 13 Whooper Swan, 6 Rook, 6 Swallow and 2 Siskin logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A group of 15 Whooper Swan roosting on the salt marsh were additional to the southbound birds. Also seen were 2290 Redshank, 1230 Golden Plover, 1200 Wigeon and 15 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
The 6 Little Egret and male Great Spotted Woodpecker remain along with at least one Hooded Crow. A flock of 6 Long-tailed Tit were new in.
Dragonflies
A total of 4 Migrant Hawker were seen along with a Common Darter.
Butterflies
Three Speckled Wood were logged.

A bits and bobs sort of day

8th October 2007 - overcast/early drizzle E4/3
Offshore
A quick check of the sea produced 17 Common Scoter, 6 Razorbill, 5 Shag, 4 Red-throated Diver, 3 Tufted Duck and 2 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Only small numbers of birds were evident yet again with just 12 Wheatear, 6 Goldcrest and 2 Chiffchaff logged.
Diurnal Migration
A quiet day, only 110 Meadow Pipit, 40 Linnet, 12 alba Wagtail and single Rock Pipit, Siskin and Mistle Thrush recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
At least 15 Greenshank were amongst good numbers of Redshank and a Purple Sandpiper roosted over the tide.
Miscellaneous
There are now 6 Little Egrets roaming the island, the 2 Hooded Crow remain and a Great Spotted Woodpecker was seen. Several Merlin and a single Peregrine continue to terrorise the skies.

At least 7 Shag remain.
Grounded Migrants
A late Redstart was the pick of the grounded birds which also included 21 Goldcrest, 10 Stonechat, 5 Redwing, 4 Wheatear and 2 Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
The skies continue to provide the main focus of attention with 1300 Meadow Pipit, 155 Linnet, 150 Starling, 120 Skylark, 45 alba Wagtail, 37 Greenfinch, 31 Golden Plover, 22 Jackdaw, 12 Redpoll, 11 Chaffinch, 10 Siskin, 8 Tree Sparrow, 4 Swallow, 2 Hooded Crow, 2 Rock Pipit and single Grey Wagtail and Redwing logged.
Wildfowl and waders
Wildfowl numbers continue to build slowly and a flock of 18 Greenshank remain.
Miscellaneous
At least 4 Little Egret continue to stalk the tidal pools while 3 Merlin and single Peregrine and Water Rail were also logged.

Morning observations (0700-1000) provided a paltry 22 Razorbill, 14 Common Scoter, 4 Red-breasted Merganser and a single Gannet. At least 6 Shag continue to be recorded.
Grounded Migrants
Although 32 Wren were logged - the highest numbers so far this autumn - the supporting cast was limited to 4 Goldcrest and a solitary Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Early morning passage again produced the most rewarding observations, totals included 1600 Meadow Pipit, 720 Linnet, 245 Starling, 200 Skylark, 130 alba Wagtail, 90 Jackdaw, 68 Greenfinch, 35 Swallow, 26 Goldfinch, 21 Pink-footed Goose, 17 Reed Bunting, 14 Siskin, 7 Grey Wagtail, 6 Chaffinch, 4 Redpoll and a single Brambling.

The Water Rail was recorded again and a single Merlin remains to run early morning sorties against the Meadow Pipit passage.

Observations (0700-1900) provided 41 Common Scoter, 39 Razorbill, 14 Gannet, 6 Pintail, 3 Red-throated Diver and 2 Arctic Tern. At least 7 Shag continue to linger.

An increase on recent days with 26 Goldcrest, 7 Stonechat, 2 Wheatear and single Song Thrush, Redwing, Blackbird and Chiffchaff.

Observations (0700-1900) provided 84 Common Scoter, 47 Razorbill, 13Gannet, 9 Red-throated Diver, 5 Shag, 5 Guillemot and a single Arctic Tern, Arctic Skua and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Again a paucity of records with just single Wheatear, Chiffchaff and Goldcrest logged.
Diurnal Migration
A lack of any early movement led to no coordinated count, however, 82 Pink-footed Goose and single Rock Pipit, Grey Wagtail and Siskin were recorded.

At least one Merlin was still present.

Observations (0700-1900) produced 67 Common Scoter, 42 Razorbill, 35 Gannet, 7 Shag, 4 Pintail, 4 Red-throated Diver, 4 Guillemot and 3 Arctic Tern.

Totals remain sparse with just 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Wheatear and single Redwing and Goldcrest logged.

Much reduced on recent days with just 250 Meadow Pipit, 35 Skylark, 35 alba Wagtail, 25 Linnet, 10 Pink-footed Goose, 6 Swallow, 3 Song Thrush, 3 Reed Bunting, 2 Greenfinch, 2 Grey Wagtail and a Siskin moving through before the rain set in.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Spotted Redshank remains and 18 Greenshank were seen.
Miscellaneous
At least 2 Merlin remain on the island.
Moths
A Canary-shouldered Thorn was new for the year.

Offshore
Still quiet over the sea with observations (0700-1900) providing just 33 Razorbill, 29 Kittiwake, 23 Common Scoter, 15 Gannet, 4 Shoveler, 2 Red-throated Diver, 2 Guillemot, 2 Sandwich Tern and an Arctic Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Also quiet with just 3 Chiffchaff and single Goldcrest and Song Thrush.
Diurnal Migration
Steady passage through the morning again dominated sightings with totals including 1700 Meadow Pipit, 550 Linnet, 310 alba Wagtail, 258 Pink-footed Goose, 195 Swallow, 110 Skylark, 60 Greenfinch, 55 Goldfinch, 45 Jackdaw, 40 Starling, 20 Chaffinch, 8 Siskin, 4 Grey Wagtail, 4 Reed Bunting, 2 Redpoll and single Rock Pipit and Song Thrush.
Miscellaneous
Both Peregrine and Merlin continue to be logged.
Butterflies
At least 15 Red Admiral were recorded and a Comma was a late addition for the year.

1st October 2007 - sunny spells NE then SE 2/3/4
Offshore
Extremely quiet over the sea (0700-1900) with just 28 Gannet, 18 Common Scoter, 17 Razorbill, 7 Red-throated Diver and 5 Kittiwake logged. However, at least 8 Shag continue to loiter.
Grounded Migrants
The poor autumn continues with just 2 Goldcrest and single Chiffchaff and Song Thrush.
Diurnal Migration
The majority of activity was again centred in the skies with morning totals including 3000 Meadow Pipit (up to 1000 birds/hour), 760 Linnet, 490 Swallow, 440 Pink-footed Goose, 390 alba Wagtail, 170 Skylark, 20 Greenfinch, 4 Reed Bunting, 3 Grey Wagtail, 3 House Sparrow, 2 House Martin, 2 Rook and single Redpoll and Siskin logged.
Miscellaneous
At least 3 Merlin and a Peregrine were seen.
Butterflies
Something of an influx with 25 Red Admiral and a Painted Lady recorded.
