The Rustic Bunting remains but continues to prove very elusive in the inclement conditions.
Offshore
Observations (0745-0945 & 1400-1500) produced 55 Gannet, 11 Common Scoter, 8 Razorbill, 3 Red-throated Diver, 3 Arctic Skua, 2 Guillemot and single Shag and Kittiwake.
Miscellaneous
At least 17 Little Egret remain.

Rustic Bunting proves elusive

Rarities
The Rustic Bunting was still present but proved very elusive in the steadily deteriorating weather conditions.
Offshore
Three periods of observations (0745-0945, 1000-1200 & 1400-1500) produced totals of 120 Gannet, 100 Common Scoter, 66 Razorbill, 21 Guillemot, 8 Red-thoated Diver, 3 Sandwich Tern and single Great Northern Diver, Leach's Petrel, Scaup, Manx Shearwater and Shag.
Diurnal Migration
Only evidenced by a southbound skein of 33 Pink-footed Geese and 120 Meadow Pipit, 20 alba Wagtail, 15 Swallow and 2 Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
Single Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit were the pick of the waders.
Miscellaneous
At least 19 Little Egret and a single Water Rail remain and 3 Raven were seen.

Rustic Bunting lingers to draw the crowds

28th September 2008 - bright and sunny N1/2
Rarities
The Rustic Bunting remained for a second day and showed well on and off to all comers. A dark phase Honey Buzzard circled over the island to gain height on the thermals before striking off due south.

Diurnal Migration
Activity in the sky was dominated by Pink-footed Geese with 1175 birds moving through, also seen were 180 Meadow Pipit, 19 Swallow, 12 alba Wagtail, 2 Grey Wagtail and a single Yellow Wagtail and Common Buzzard.
Grounded Migrants
Again sparse with just 15 Goldcrest, 7 Wheatear and a Chiffchaff logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 21 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and a Ruff.
Miscellaneous
At least 10 Little Egret, 2 Kingfisher and 2 Water Rail remain. A Little Owl sunned itself in the lee of the north wind.

Rustic Bunting is new addition to the county list

27th September 2008 - hazy sun SW2/3/4
Rarities
A change in wind direction with the persistent northeasterlies of the last few days giving way to southwestelies and the result, Cumbria's first Rustic Bunting was found at South Walney Nature Reserve! Although frustratingly elusive at times, with patience the bird showed well on occasions for all comers.
Offshore
A quick check over the sea produced 15 Gannet, 7 Shag and a Razorbill.
Diurnal Migration
Although somewhat interrupted by the days events, a light passage through the morning produced 200 Meadow Pipit, 30 alba Wagtail, 20 Swallow, 15 Skylark, 5 Grey Wagtail and 4 Siskin.
Grounded Migrants
Despite the presence of the Rustic Bunting grounded birds were yet again thin on the ground with just 17 Goldcrest, 3 Chiffchaff and a sprinkling of Robin logged.
Miscellaneous
At least 10 Little Egret and a Water Rail remain.

26th September 2008 - hazy sun SE1/2
Diurnal Migration
Observations (0900-1100) produced totals of 390 Meadow Pipit, 90 Swallow, 45 alba Wagtail, 18 Pink-footed Goose, 12 Skylark and 6 Siskin, along with a lone Raven.
Grounded Migrants
Although a few new arrivals were in evidence totals remain light with just 17 Goldcrest, 14 Robin, 5 Song Thrush and 4 Chiffchaff logged.
Miscellaneous
A Water Rail remains in residence.

Shag numbers continue to build

25th September 2008 - sunny spells NE1/2
Offshore
The number of Shag present around the coastline continue to build with 16 birds located on calm seas, also seen were 20 Gannet and single Razorbill and Common Scoter.
Diurnal Migration
Generally quiet (0830-0930), although 400 Meadow Pipit and 300 Pink-footed Geese flew through other sightings were limited to 15 alba Wagtail, 6 Skylark, 4 Swallow and a solitary Siskin.
Grounded Migrants
The bushes continue to remain almost devoid of life. There was little to suggest any newly arrived birds with just 11 Goldcrest and 3 Chiffchaff logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 24 Greenshank and 2 Black-tailed Godwit amongst 1130 Redshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 11 Little Egret remain and single Water Rail, Merlin and Little Owl were logged.
Dragonflies
Both Migrant Hawker and Common Darter are still on the wing.

24th September 2008 - bright and sunny NE3/4

A quick look over the sea revealed 10 Gannet and 5 Shag.
Diurnal Migration
Although 6 skeins of Pink-footed Geese, totalling 440 birds, moved south further evidence of movement was limited to 50 Meadow Pipit, 10 Swallow, 10 alba Wagtail, 3 Siskin and 2 Grey Wagtail.
Grounded Migrants
Very thin on the ground with just 6 Goldcrest, 2 Chiffchaff and a single Tree Sparrow the only birds of note..

A Little Owl was logged.

Diurnal Migration
Further evidence of movement through the morning was supplied by 180 Meadow Pipit, 80 Swallow, 28 Pink-footed Goose and 2 House Martin.

Limited to 3 Goldcrest and single Chiffchaff and Whitethroat.
Miscellaneous
A Barn Owl hunted over the fields at dusk.

A couple of short scans over the sea early morning (0800-0900) produced 34 Gannet, 5 Razorbill, 4 Shag, 2 Sandwich Tern and a Red-throated Diver.
Diurnal Migration
Intermittent observations through the morning (0800-1200) produced totals of 2270 Swallow, 1260 Meadow Pipit, 130 Skylark, 120 House Martin, 56 alba Wagtail, 40 Sand Martin, 12 Grey Wagtail, 23 Pink-footed Goose and 3 Siskin.
Grounded Migrants
Yet again scant fare with just 18 Goldcrest and 2 Chiffchaff of any note.
Miscellaneous
At least one Water Rail remains and raptors involved 9 Kestrel, 3 Sparrowhawk and a Merlin. A group of 5 Little Egret was perhaps a poor reflection of the number of birds actually present.

Morning observations (0800-0900) produced 34 Gannet, 10 Common Scoter, 4 Razorbill, 3 Scaup, 2 Guillemot and a Red-throated Diver.
Diurnal Migration
Interrmittent observations (0900-1130) revealed a strong passge with 3165 Meadow Pipit, 390 Swallow, 140 Skylark, 140 Pink-footed Goose, 80 Linnet, 48 alba Wagtail, 28 Grey Wagtail, 6 House Martin, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 3 Siskin and 2 Reed Bunting seen.
Grounded Migrants
Again a light sprinkling of grounded birds was led by at least one Great Spotted Woodpecker and also included 16 Goldcrest, 12 Stonechat, 8 Chiffchaff, 3 Wheatear and single Reed Warbler and Blackcap.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 230 Golden Plover, 10 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
Both Peregrine and Merlin hunted over the island and at least one Water Rail remains. Goldfinch numbers begin to build with a flock of 140 birds logged.

Offshore
A return to the customary early morning observations (0800-0900) produced 500 Common Scoter, 80 Gannet, 16 Razorbill, 4 Red-throated Diver, 3 Scaup and a Guillemot.
Diurnal Migration
Although a Yellow Wagtail was logged other sightings proved rather disappointing with just 100 Meadow Pipit, 20 Swallow, 15 alba Wagtail and a Grey Wagtail.
Grounded Migrants
Variety rather than quantity was led by 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 2 Pied Flycatcher along with 7 Goldcrest, 3 Whinchat, 2 Blackcap, 2 Whitethroat and a Willow Warbler.

Marsh Harrier moves through

18th September 2008 - overcast/murky SW1
Diurnal Migration
A juvenile Marsh Harrier flew through and passerines on the move included 650 Meadow Pipit, 70 Swallow and 7 Grey Wagtail.
Grounded Migrants
Although 6 Whinchat were logged the supporting cast remained very thin on the ground with just 7 Goldcrest and 3 Chiffchaff of any note.
Wildfowl and Waders
A Black-tailed Godwit provided the only interest.
Miscellaneous
At least 20 Little Egret remain and both Water Rail and Kingfisher put in another appearance.

A quick check over the sea on the high tide produced 35 Common Scoter, 10 Gannet, 6 Red-throated Diver, 2 Guillemot and single Razorbill and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Again limited fare with just 22 Pied Wagtail, 10 Goldcrest and single Wheatear and Whitethroat logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 15 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A Short-eared Owl was the first of the autumn and other sightings included 27 Little Egret and a Water Rail.

A cursory glance over the sea produced 2 Shag and a Black Guillemot.

Little evidence of any new arrivals with just a handful of Goldcrest and a Chiffchaff logged.

A group of 10 Shoveler were seen and waders included 6 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A Kingfisher was new for the year and 2 Merlin were logged. A gathering of 34 Little Egrets along the eastern shore eclipses all previous records.

Again a light sprinkling of birds with 22 Robin, 14 Goldcrest, 3 Chiffchaff, 3 Blackcap and single Grey Wagtail, Whitethroat and Reed Warbler logged.

A Merlin stalked a flock of Goldfinch and at least 26 Little Egret are now present on the island.

Little on offer over the sea with just 65 Wigeon, 32 Sandwich Tern, 4 Gannet, 4 Common Scoter and single Red-throated Diver and Razorbill logged.

The first large scale movement of the autumn (0830-1030) produced totals of 1840 Swallow, 1650 Meadow Pipit, 415 House Martin, 80 Linnet, 62 Siskin, 50 Skylark, 45 alba Wagtail, 41 Sand Martin, 40 Grey Wagtail, 21 Starling, 3 Tree Pipit and 3 Goldfinch.
Grounded Migrants
A Pied Flycatcher was new for the year and variety was added by 5 Chiffchaff, 5 Goldcrest, 5 White Wagtail, 3 Wheatear and single Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Blackcap and Willow Warbler.

A dramatic increase in Wigeon numbers saw 480 birds logged and waders included 4500 Oystercatcher, 2210 Redshank, 1790 Knot, 685 Curlew, 505 Sanderling, 220 Lapwing, 202 Grey Plover, 185 Turnstone, 170 Ringed Plover, 150 Golden Plover and 29 Greenshank.

Morning observations (0800-0900) produced 138 Common Scoter, 85 Gannet, 43 Kittiwake, 34 Sandwich Tern, 5 Shelduck, 3 Razorbill - including a bizarre looking white-winged individual - 3 Red-throated Diver, 2 Shoveler and single Arctic Skua and Manx Shearwater.
Diurnal Migration
Still little evidence of any significant southbound movement with just 100 Meadow Pipit, 20 Swallow, 3 Grey Wagtail and 2 Sand Martin logged.
Grounded Migrants
Another smattering of grounded birds included 15 Goldcrest, 11 Robin, 10 Stonechat, 9 Wheatear, 5 Chiffchaff, 5 White Wagtail, 3 Whinchat, 2 Grey Wagtail and single Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat and Willow Warbler.

Waders included the first Curlew Sandpiper of the autumn and a juvenile Spotted Redshank.

Although no coordinated observations were undertaken during calm conditions early morning 12 Common Scoter, 6 Shag, 4 Sandwich Tern, 2 Gannet and 2 Red-throated Diver were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Highlights were 10 Grey Wagtail, 4 Siskin, 2 Lesser Redpoll and a Tree Pipit amongst small numbers of Meadow Pipit, Swallow and alba Wagtail.
Grounded Migrants
The most activity for several days with 24 Goldcrest, 17 Robin, 15 Chiffchaff, 4 Willow Warbler, 2 Spotted Flycatcher and single Sedge Warbler and Wheatear recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
A Whimbrel and 2 juvenile Spotted Redshank were the pick of the waders.
Miscellaneous
A ringtail Hen Harrier hunted the saltmarsh along the eastern shore of the island in the evening and other raptors involved Merlin, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Nuthatch tops the bill

Although quieter than yesterday morning observations (0830-0930) provided variety if not the quantity. Sightings were led by 3 Arctic Skua (2 dark, 1 pale) and also included 71 Common Scoter, 26 Gannet, 10 Wigeon, 6 Arctic Tern, 6 Sandwich Tern, 4 Razorbill, 3 Pintail and single Manx Shearwater and Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to 2 Goldcrest and single Blackcap, Whitethroat and Chiffchaff.
Wildfowl and Waders
A flock of 1000 Knot was the largest of the autumn so far.
Miscellaneous
Presumably the result of post-breeding dispersal and a steady expansion in the Cumbrian breeding range, rather than migration, a Nuthatch was just the second island record. Continuing the woodland theme - a flock of 20 Long-tailed Tit would appear to be the largest ever recorded on the island.

Observations (0745-0915 & 1000-1100) were dominated by a total of 1840 Manx Shearwaters with birds passing at a rate of 1600 birds/hour in the first hour. Also seen were totals of 55 Common Scoter, 45 Gannet, 32 Kittiwake, 20 Sandwich Tern, 3 Arctic Tern, 3 Shag, 3 Razorbill, 2 Guillemot and single Fulmar and Red-breasted Merganser.

Observations over the sea (0730-0830) before the rain set in produced an adult Little Gull along with totals of 78 Common Scoter, 50 Manx Shearwater, 32 Kittiwake, 28 Gannet, 6 Sandwich Tern and a Guillemot.

A group of 14 Little Egret fed on the edge of the rising tide.

A slight increase in activity produced 200 Meadow Pipit, 50 Swallow, 12 alba Wagtail and 9 Grey Wagtail.

Again variety if not quantity, sightings were led by a Great Spotted Woodpecker and also included 18 Goldcrest, 4 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff and single Whinchat, Lesser Whitethroat and Reed Warbler.

Although water levels remain high after the recent rain waders included 4 Greenshank and 3 Black-tailed Godwit.

The Barred Warbler was still in roadside bushes at Snab Point.

Still little evidence of any concerted movement with 3 Grey Wagtail and a Tree Pipit the highlight.

A varied selection of grounded birds included 30 Robin, 17 Goldcrest, 9 Wheatear, 7 White Wagtail, 4 Chiffchaff, 2 Whitethroat, 2 Sedge Warbler, 2 Tree Pipit and a Willow Warbler.

Waders included 28 Greenshank and a Spotted Redshank.

At least 6 Little Egret remain.

Barred Warbler takes star billing

6th September 2008 - early rain, then showers NE4/5
Rarities
A juvenile Barred Warbler in roadside bushes at Snab Point provided the highlight of the day.
Offshore
Several periods of observation through the course of the day provided totals of 70 Sandwich Tern, 57 Gannet, 12 Common Scoter, 12 Shag, 7 Arctic Skua, 6 Razorbill, 5 Arctic Tern, 3 Manx Shearwater, 3 Pintail and a Storm Petrel.
Diurnal Migration
The only notable sighting involved 4 Swift.
Grounded Migrants
Apart from the Barred Warbler a scattering of migrants included 25 Wheatear, 2 Spotted Flycatcher and single White Wagtail and Goldcrest.

Waders included 2 Ruff and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
At least 11 Little Egret remain and raptors included Merlin, Peregrine, Sparrowhawk and 3 Kestrel.

Black Tern brightens an otherwise dreary day

A wet and dismal day was somewhat brightened by a Black Tern that moved slowly north close inshore on the rising tide at 1315hrs. Also seen during two periods of observation (0630-0730 & 1300-1400) were totals of 115 Sandwich Tern, 90 Common Scoter, 44 Gannet and single Kittiwake and Shelduck.

A Merlin and 2 Grey Wagtail were logged before the rain took hold.

Another day, another record breaking count of Little Egret with 21 birds logged. A single Water Rail was also recorded.

Teal and Wigeon numbers continue to increase daily and waders included 4 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.

A record breaking flock of 18 Little Egret were logged along with a Merlin.
