Mammalian highlight

30th April 2010 – overcast W1/2
Offshore
A quick check over the sea early morning yielded a dark phase Arctic Skua along with 40 Common Scoter, 30 Sandwich Tern, 10 Gannet, 4 Guillemot and a single Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Newly arrived birds were limited to a handful of Willow Warbler, Wheatear and Blackcap.
Wildfowl and Waders
A flock of 50 Whimbrel roosted over the tide.
Mammals
Two Roe Deer, an unusual sight on the island, were the highlight of the day.

Velvet Scoter and first Swift

29th April 2010 – overcast then sunny spells W2/3
Offshore
Two periods of observation through the morning (0715-0815 & 0900-1000) were highlighted by 3 drake Velvet Scoter. Also seen were 128 Common Scoter, 72 Sandwich Tern, 46 Gannet, 10 Guillemot and 2 Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Another smattering of newly grounded birds involved 14 Wheatear, 11 Willow Warbler, 3 Blackcap and a White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
The first Swift of the spring flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger and Whimbrel increased to 72 birds, additional waders included 320 Sanderling, 100 Ringed Plover and 4 Black-tailed Godwit.

Whimbrel influx

28th April 2010 – overcast then sunny spells SSE2
Offshore
Another quiet day over the sea with just small numbers of Common Scoter, Guillemot, Gannet, Red-throated Diver and Sandwich Tern logged.
Grounded Migrants
Although an overnight influx of Sedge Warbler into breeding sites on the island was evident it was also generally quiet on the land with just 7 Wheatear, 2 Willow Warbler, 2 Blackcap and yesterdays lingering Grasshopper Warbler.
Wildfowl and Waders
An influx of Whimbrel saw 54 birds recorded.
Ringing
Details of two colour ringed Lesser Black-backed Gulls (2WH & DWN) breeding in the gull colony have just been received. Both were initially ringed at Stoke Orchard, Gloucestershire on 21st August 2004 and 6th December 2008 respectively with the former also previously reported outside the breeding season from L’Ile d’Olonne, Vendee, FRANCE; Sidi Akhfennir beach, Laayoune, MOROCCO and Akhfanir, Plage, MOROCCO - the latter site 3030km to the south of Walney Island.
Moths
The first Flame Shoulder of the year was logged and a V Pug was a less than annual visitor to the moth traps.

Whinchat appears amongst Wheatear influx

27th April 2010 – bright start then overcast SE1/2
Offshore
A rather mundane early morning seawatch (0700-0800) produced 64 Common Scoter, 19 Sandwich Tern, 11 Gannet, 11 Razorbill, 6 Guillemot, 3 Red-throated Diver, 2 Manx Shearwater and a Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
The numbers of territorial Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler continue to increase and a male Whinchat – the first of the year - was amongst a fall of 50 Wheatear, also seen were 4 Willow Warbler, 3 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff and single Grasshopper Warbler and White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
A late movement saw several skeins of Pink-footed Geese, totalling 210 birds, heading north.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 92 Golden Plover, 26 Whimbrel, 4 Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank.
Ringing
Remarkably, the only Willow Warbler trapped was found to be bearing a foreign ring and sporting the address Arnhem-VT, Holland suggesting it had previously been ringed in The Netherlands.

Excellent variety over the sea

26th April 2010 – overcast then sunny WSW2/3
Offshore
The highlights of early morning observations (0730-0830) were 3 Velvet Scoter, 2 Arctic Skua (dark phase) and 2 Little Tern – the latter the first of the year. The supporting cast involved 87 Common Scoter, 80 Sandwich Tern,. 75 Gannet, 11 Razorbill, 7 Red-throated Diver, 3 Manx Shearwater, 4 Guillemot, 3 Kittiwake and a Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
An increase was noted in the number of territorial Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler and another smattering of grounded birds involved 10 Willow Warbler, 3 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff and single White Wagtail, Robin, Goldcrest and Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
A solitary House Martin was noted amongst another trickle of Swallow coming in off the sea.
Wildfowl and Waders
Small numbers of Wigeon, Teal and the pair of Gadwall continue to linger and waders included 2 Greenshank and 2 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
A Raven was the best of the rest.

Moths
The first Nutmeg of the year appeared in the moth traps.

Osprey and Ring Ouzel

25th April 2010 –early rain/mist/murk/sunny later S2/3
Offshore
Just small numbers of Gannet, Red-throated Diver and Sandwich Tern were noted.
Grounded Migrants
Early rain grounded a few migrants with Ring Ouzel and Redstart the pick of the bunch, also seen were 26 Willow Warbler, 4 Whitethroat, 3 Sedge Warbler, 3 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff and single White Wagtail and Grasshopper Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
An Osprey headed north and small numbers of Swallow and Sand Martin continue to trickle through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 10 Black-tailed Godwit and a Whimbrel.
Moths
Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet and Double Striped Pug were new for the year.

Sedge Warbler new in

24th April 2010 –hazy sun E1
Offshore
A flock of 5 Arctic Tern headed into Morecambe Bay, otherwise just small numbers of Gannet, Sandwich Tern, Red-throated Diver and Guillemot were noted offshore.
Grounded Migrants
Although a Sedge Warbler was new for the year there was little evidence of grounded birds with just 10 Wheatear, 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Whitethroat, 2 Blackcap and a White Wagtail logged.
Diurnal Migration
Small numbers of Swallow and Sand Martin continue to trickle through along with 2 House Martin.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 8 Whimbrel and 4 Black-tailed Godwit.
Moths
A Herald was a less than annual visitor to the moth trap.

First Whitethroat returns

Offshore
Just small numbers of Gannet, Sandwich Tern and Razorbill were noted over the sea.
Grounded Migrants
A territorial Whitehroat was new for the year and 2 Lesser Whitethroat now hold territory, migrants included a total of 24 Wheatear along with 4 White Wagtail and 2 Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Small numbers of Swallow and Sand Martin trickled through.
Wildfowl and Waders
There are now 4 Gadwall present and waders included 3 Purple Sandpiper amongst 500 Turnstone, 17 Golden Plover and 5 Whimbrel.
Moths
Dotted Border and Pale Pinion were new in the moth trap – the latter the first for the island and following rapidly on from the island’s first Tawny Pinion.

Little Gull leads early morning sightings

22nd April 2010 – early frost/calm, then sunny W1/2
Offshore
The highlight of early morning observations (0615-0715) were provided by a summer plumaged adult Little Gull while the flat calm sea also yielded 150 Razorbill, 70 Guillemot, 36 Common Scoter, 32 Red-throated Diver, 10 Gannet, 10 Sandwich Tern and a Red-breasted Merganser.

Grounded Migrants
A smattering of grounded birds involved 19 Wheatear, 15 Willow Warbler and 2 Blackcap.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger and waders included 14 Golden Plover, 10 Whimbrel and 4 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A flock of 27 Twite were recorded.

21st April 2010 – bright and sunny N1/2
Offshore
Early morning observations (0615-0715) produced 150 Razorbill, 36 Common Scoter, 30 Gannet, 10 Sandwich Tern, 10 Guillemot, 3 Red-throated Diver and a Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
The Lesser Whitethroat remains on territory but newly arrived birds involved just single Wheatear, Blackcap and Willow Warbler.
Wildfowl and Waders

Waders included 5 Black-tailed Godwit and a Whimbrel

Mass clear out

20th April 2010 – bright and sunny WNW4
Offshore
Early morning observations (0615-0715) produced 160 Razorbill, 72 Gannet, 48 Sandwich Tern, 19 Common Scoter, 14 Guillemot, 9 Red-throated Diver, 6 Fulmar, 4 Kittiwake and a Red-breasted Merganser.

Grounded Migrants
The majority of birds from yesterday’s fall quickly moved on overnight with just 14 Wheatear and 2 Willow Warbler remaining.
Wildfowl and Waders
The 2 Gadwall and a solitary first-summer male Goldeneye continue to linger and waders included 14 Golden Plover and a Whimbrel.

Ring Ouzels drop in

19th April 2010 – overcast/showers NE1/2 bright and sunny WNW3 later
Offshore
Early morning observations (0615-0715) produced 36 Gannet, 30 Razorbill, 22 Common Scoter, 12 Sandwich Tern and 10 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Overcast conditions and a couple of light showers early morning deposited a number of migrants on the island and produced the first fall of the spring. Sightings were led by 2 male Ring Ouzel and also included 65 Willow Warbler, 25 Wheatear, 4 Chiffchaff and 2 Blackcap
Diurnal Migration
Only evidenced by a trickle of Swallow.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall remain and waders included 1000 Turnstone, 4 Whimbrel and Common Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
At least one Little Egret and 22 Twite remain and a Merlin was logged
Moths
The island’s first Shoulder-stripe for over 10 years was attracted to the moth traps.

Redstart new in

18th April 2010 – misty start then hazy sun E1
Offshore
Observations produced just small numbers of Gannet, Red-throated Diver, Guillemot and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Despite the favourable looking conditions which provided 2 Grasshopper Warbler and the first Redstart of the year the supporting cast was limited to 14 Willow Warbler, 8 Wheatear, 4 Blackcap and 4 White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
A trickle of Swallow, Sand Martin and Meadow Pipit included 2 Lesser Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 5 Black-tailed Godwit and 4 Whimbrel.
Moths
The moth traps held Clouded Drab and Tawny Pinion – the later would appear to be the first record for the island.

Lesser Whitethroat stakes territory and a Hooded Crow flies through

17th April 2010 – hazy sun W1/2
Offshore
Quieter over the sea than of late with early morning observations (0815-0915) producing 88 Common Scoter, 25 Gannet, 17 Razorbill, 9 Sandwich Tern, 3 Kittiwake, 3 Red-throated Diver and a single Arctic Tern.
Grounded Migrants
A single Lesser Whitethroat was on territory and newly arrived grounded birds included 20 Wheatear, 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff and a White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
A Hooded Crow flew through early morning and 3 Lesser Redpoll were amongst small numbers of Swallow and Sand Martin.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger and waders included 16 Purple Sandpiper and 12 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
A day flying Barn Owl hunted over the island
Butterflies
Both Speckled Wood and Green-veined White are now on the wing.

First Puffin and Arctic Tern appear offshore

16th April 2010 – hazy sun calm then WNW2
Offshore
Observations on the flooding tide (0815-0915) were highlighted by a Puffin and the first 4 Arctic Tern of the spring moving into Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 25 Sandwich Tern, 20 Razorbill, 11 Gannet, 7 Red-throated Diver, 6 Common Scoter, 3 Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Pintail, 2 Guillemot and a Shag.
Grounded Migrants
A hint of cloud early morning saw 8 Wheatear, 4 Willow Warbler and 2 Chiffchaff logged.
Diurnal Migration
Limited to a trickle of Meadow Pipit, Swallow and alba Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall remain, however no pale-bellied Brent Geese have been recorded for several days and are presumably now en route to their Canadian breeding grounds. Waders included a flock of 120 Golden Plover.

Moths
The moth traps held just small numbers of Early Thorn, Common Quaker and Hebrew Character.

First Manx Shearwaters appear offshore

15th April 2010 – hazy sun NE2/3
Offshore
Variety rather than quantity remained the theme over the sea with early morning observations (0800-0900) producing the first 2 Manx Shearwater of the year along with 146 Common Scoter, 135 Sandwich Tern, 51 Razorbill, 22 Gannet, 16 Guillemot, 6 Red-throated Diver, 5 Red-breasted Merganser and 5 Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
The settled weather conditions continue to dominate and another quiet day provided just 7 Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Small numbers of Swallow, Lesser Redpoll and alba Wagtail were logged coming in off the sea amongst 50 Meadow Pipit.
Miscellaneous
A Peregrine was the best of the rest.

14th April 2010 – bright and sunny NE3/4
Offshore
Early morning observations (0800-0900) produced a dark phase Arctic Skua heading into Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 120 Sandwich Tern, 103 Razorbill, 31 Common Scoter, 20 Gannet, 6 Guillemot, 5 Kittiwake, 4 Red-throated Diver and 2 Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
Another quiet day with just single Wheatear, White Wagtail, Chiffchaff and Tree Sparrow logged.
Diurnal Migration
Small numbers of Meadow Pipit and Swallow were noted coming in off the sea.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 60 Golden Plover – many in summer plumage and 14 Purple Sandpiper and 33 Sanderling amongst 350 Turnstone

Water Pipits reappear and the first Whimbrel arrive

13th April 2010 – bright start then cloud W1/2
Rarities
Another round of high tides again flushed two now summer plumaged Water Pipit from the salt marshes and into the flooded horse paddocks near Biggar.
Offshore
Early morning observations over calm seas produced 40 Gannet, 22 Common Scoter, 20 Sandwich Tern and a single Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
A singing Grasshopper Warbler was newly arrived at a breeding site on the island, however, the day again dawned to bright and clear skies and consequently grounded migrants remained at a premium with just 2 Chiffchaff and a single Tree Sparrow logged.
Diurnal Migration
Corvids were again on the move with small numbers of Carrion Crow and Jackdaw logged along with 3 briefly grounded White Wagtail and single Sand Martin and Lesser Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first 2 Whimbrel of the year were ahead of the mean arrival date for this species.
Miscellaneous
At least one Little Egret continues to roam the salt marshes.

Marsh Harrier moves through

12th April 2010 – sunny spells SW1/2
Offshore
Remaining quiet over the sea early morning with just small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Common Scoter and Sandwich Tern seen.
Grounded Migrants
The day dawned to bright and clear skies, conditions not conducive to producing grounded birds and the result: 11 Wheatear, 9 White Wagtail and a Willow Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
Corvids were on the move with small numbers of Carrion Crow, Rook and Jackdaw logged along with 2 Sand Martin and a Lesser Redpoll. Late news from yesterday involved a female-type Marsh Harrier that flew south late afternoon.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 12 Purple Sandpiper amongst 410 Turnstone and the pair of Gadwall still continue to loiter.
Miscellaneous
Single Little Egret and Merlin and 43 Twite were recorded.

Earliest ever Grasshopper Warbler

11th April 2010 – overcast start clearing to hazy sun E1
Offshore
Early morning observations provided just small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Common Scoter and Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Although the earliest ever Grasshopper Warbler was recorded additional summer migrants remain thin on the ground with just 10 Wheatear, 6 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff and a Blackcap logged along with a late Fieldfare.
Diurnal Migration
Disappointing considering the conditions early morning with just 8 Sand Martin, 3 Lesser Redpoll, 2 White Wagtail and a Tree Sparrow recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger amongst small numbers of Teal and Wigeon and 3 Goldeneye. Waders included 3 Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
A Short-eared Owl hunted over the island in the evening and both Barn and Little Owl were also seen.
Moths
Catches in the moth trap are now starting to increase with Emmelina mondactyla, Early Thorn and Powdered Quaker all new for the year.

Tree Sparrow provides highlight

10th April 2010 – hazy sun S1
Offshore
Early morning observations provided 80 Common Scoter, 9 Sandwich Tern, 8 Red-throated Diver, 7 Gannet, 3 Razorbill, 2 Kittiwake and a Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
Remaining thin on the ground with just 3 Chiffchaff and single Wheatear, Goldcrest and Willow Warbler recorded.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 10 Sand Martin and unusually a spring Tree Sparrow were logged amongst a trickle of Meadow Pipit.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger.
Miscellaneous
Three Red-legged Partridge and single Merlin and Little Owl were the best of the rest.

First Blackcap and a Common Buzzard moves through

9th April 2010 – overcast N1
Grounded Migrants
Again limited fare with just 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler and a female Blackcap recorded.
Diurnal Migration
A Common Buzzard and 2 Lesser Redpoll flew north amongst small numbers of Swallow.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger and a Black-tailed Godwit was seen.
Miscellaneous
Just 7 Twite and 2 Little Egret were logged.

Both Weasel and Brown Hare were seen
Moths and Butterflies
The moth traps held just a single Hebrew Character. An increase in Small Tortoiseshell was evident and the first Peacock was on the wing.

8th April 2010 – sunny spells SW1/2
Offshore
An evening watch over the high tide produced 1000 Eider, 48 Common Scoter, 10 Gannet, 10 Sandwich Tern, 8 Red-breasted Merganser and 2 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Again only small numbers of newly arrived migrants were logged with just 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler and a single Goldcrest seen.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall and small numbers of Goldeneye, Wigeon and Teal continue to linger while waders included 2 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Again just a single Little Egret was recorded.

First House Martin and Willow Warbler

7th April 2010 – overcast then sunny NW2/3
Offshore
Sandwich Terns are beginning to build with a flock of 30 birds feeding offshore.
Grounded Migrants
The merest hint of migration with 6 Wheatear and single Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff logged.
Diurnal Migration
Small numbers of hirundines were evident with 12 Swallow, 2 Sand Martin and a House Martin amongst a trickle of Meadow Pipits
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger and waders included 30 Purple Sandpiper, 4 Greenshank and 3 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
Single Merlin and Little Egret and 2 Red-legged Partridge were recorded.

5th April 2010 – rain clearing later SW5/6
Offshore
Morning observations (1000-1100 provided just 34 Common Scoter, 17 Razorbill, 14 Red-throated Diver, 7 Gannet and 3 Sandwich Tern.
Wildfowl and Waders
The flock of Brent Geese held 80 pale-bellied birds and waders included 500 Golden Plover, 12 Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Several Little Egret continue to haunt the salt marshes along the eastern shore and 110 Twite remain.

First Arctic Skua

4th April 2010 – sunny spells W3/4/5
Offshore
Observations (0830-1000) were dominated by a total of 217 Common Scoter, also seen were 32 Sandwich Tern, 27 Razorbill, 18 Gannet, 16 Kittiwake and 12 Red-throated Diver. An evening watch produced 2 Shag and an Arctic Skua amongst small numbers of Gannet, Red-throated Diver and Kittiwake.
Diurnal Migration
A single Swallow flew through amongst small numbers of Meadow Pipit.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger.

First Swallows move through

3rd April 2010 – overcast then bright and sunny SW1/2
Rarities
Although remaining mobile at least one Water Pipit was again in the flooded fields and horse paddocks near Biggar.
Offshore
Observations (0745-0845) produced 80 Common Scoter, 31 Kittiwake, 10 Razorbill, 9 Teal, 3 Gannet, 2 Red-throated Diver and single Sandwich Tern and Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
Remaining sparse with just 120 Meadow Pipit logged.
Diurnal Migration
The first 2 Swallow flew through along with 2 Sand Martin and an early morning total of 60 Meadow Pipit.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall remain and waders included 7 Greenshank and 3 Black-tailed Godwit amongst 650 Redshank
Miscellaneous
The flock of 110 Twite remain and 3 Little Egret and 2 Raven were logged.

Water Pipits and Little Gulls

2nd April 2010 – overcast, rain by evening SE3/4
Rarities
Although remaining mobile at least 3 Water Pipit were again in the flooded fields and horse paddocks near Biggar.
Offshore
Observations (0800-0900 & 1445-1545) produced a total of 22 Little Gull (all adults) along with 80 Common Scoter, 20 Gannet, 17 Razorbill, 15 Sandwich Tern, 14 Kittiwake, 14 Red-throated Diver, 10 Red-breasted Merganser and 8 Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
Remaining sparse with just 7 Wheatear and a Fieldfare logged.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 100 Meadow Pipit flew through early morning.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 90 pale-bellied birds and waders included 700 Golden Plover and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
The flock of 100 Twite remain.

Great Northern Diver and Water Pipit

1st April 2010 – bright and sunny W3/4
Rarities
Five Water Pipit were again present over the tide, however the birds are mobile and today were favouring the flooded fields and horse paddocks in the vicinity of Biggar.
Offshore
Morning observations on the rising tide (0730-0830 & 0930-1100) saw plenty of activity offshore, sightings were led by a Great Northern Diver with a supporting cast of 328 Kittiwake, 235 Razorbill, 55 Gannet, 44 Red-throated Diver, 40 Guillemot, 28 Sandwich Tern, 14 Common Scoter and 10 Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Three Wheatear were seen.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 6 Whooper Swan flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall still linger.
Miscellaneous
At least 4 Little Egret continue to haunt the salt marshes along the eastern shore.
