Puffin status review!

31st May 2019 – overcast/rain at times SW3/4
Offshore
Observations (1200-1300) produced 110 Sandwich Tern, 90 Common Scoter, 26 Guillemot, 17 Kittiwake, 14 Manx Shearwater, 8 Gannet, 6 Arctic Tern and a Puffin. The status of Puffin in the waters off Walney Island has changed dramatically in recent years, although just a single bird was seen today it has been a record year for sightings with 115 birds logged surpassing the then record 49 birds seen in 2018 when birds continued to be seen into June.
Grounded Migrants
A Spotted Flycatcher was the only migrant logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Two Pink-footed Geese and the two Wigeon remain.
Butterflies and Moths
Middle-barred Minor was new for the year.

Velvet Scoters

30th May 2019 – overcast/rain at times SW3/4
Offshore
Morning observations (0630-0730) produced 305 Manx Shearwater, 170 Sandwich Tern, 105 Guillemot, 80 Gannet, 75 Kittiwake, 16 Puffin, 11 Razorbill, 10 Common Scoter, 7 Fulmar, 2 Great Skua and 2 Arctic Skua. Later observations over the mouth of Morecambe Bay added 730 Common Scoter, 45 Manx Shearwater, 40 Gannet, 35 Guillemot, 15 Kittiwake, 10 Puffin, 10 Arctic Tern, 3 Little Tern, 2 Velvet Scoter and an Arctic Skua
Wildfowl and Waders
The drake Scaup continues to associate with the Eider flock, 4 Pink-footed Geese were seen and 2 Wigeon and a Shoveler were suggestive of the first returning wildfowl.
Miscrellaneous
A Peregrine was the best of the rest.

Scaup continues to linger

Morning observations (0630-0730) produced variety but little quantity. Sightings included: 38 Common Scoter, 30 Sandwich Tern, 24 Guillemot, 23 Arctic Tern, 13 Little Tern, 12 Razorbill, 12 Gannet, 9 Puffin and single Common Tern and Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Two Wheatear were the only migrant passerines noted.
Wildfowl and Waders
The drake Scaup continues to associate with the Eider flock.
Butterflies and Moths
Buff-tip and Dark Arches were new for the year.

Seabirds continue to dominate sightings

28th May 2019 – sunny spells NNW2/3

Early morning observations (0630-0730) were quieter than of late with 150 Guillemot, 105 Sandwich Tern, 68 Common Scoter, 14 Gannet, 12 Manx Shearwater, 2 Puffin and 2 Little Tern.
Diurnal Migration
A few House Martin continue to arrive.
Wildfowl and Waders
A late Pink-footed Goose was seen.
Butterflies and Moths
Nutmeg was new for the year.

Extended observations through the morning on the falling tide (0630-1030) produced 460 Manx Shearwater, 325 Guillemot, 260 Sandwich Tern, 135 Gannet, 45 Kittiwake, 22 Common Scoter, 14 Puffin, 10 Fulmar, 2 Arctic Skua, 2 Arctic Tern, 2 Little Tern and a Red-throated Diver.
Miscellaneous
A family party of Raven ransacked the islands litter bins.

Morning observations as the rain cleared (0930-1130) produced 330 Manx Shearwater, 180 Sandwich Tern, 175 Guillemot, 16 Gannet, 14 Razorbill, 8 Kittiwake, 3 Puffin, 3 Fulmar, 3 Arctic Tern and 3 Arctic Skua.

Yellow Wagtails

25th May 2019 – sunny spells NW2

Early morning sightings (0630-0730) were disappointing with just 56 Guillemot, 29 Sandwich Tern, 17 Gannet, 8 Common Scoter, 7 Manx Shearwater and 2 Red-throated Diver logged.
Grounded Migrants
Two Yellow Wagtail and a Willow Warbler were the only migrant passerines logged.
Butterflies and Moths
Garden Carpet and Shears were new for the year.

Black Guillemot

24th May 2019 – bright and sunny NW3

Early morning (0630-0730) produced variety with 240 Guillemot, 46 Sandwich Tern, 25 Razorbill, 8 Manx Shearwater, 7 Gannet, 6 Puffin, 4 Kittiwake, 2 Common Scoter and single Black Guillemot and Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
Two Spotted Flycatcher were the only migrant passerines logged.
Diurnal Migration
Early morning saw 17 Swallow, 17 House Martin and a Lesser Redpoll arrive in off the sea.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 210 Sanderling.

Breeding Great Spotted Woodpecker

23rd May 2019 – overcast SW1/2

Early morning (0630-0730) was quiet over the sea producing just 104 Sandwich Tern, 50 Guillemot, 19 Gannet, 8 Common Scoter and 3 Manx Shearwater.
Grounded Migrants
A Willow Warbler was the only migrant passerine logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Five Black-tailed Godwit were logged.
Breeding Birds
A pair of Great Spotted Woodpecker are breeding on the island – only the second record.
Butterflies and Moths
A total of 166 moths of 26 species was the best return from the moth trap so far this year with Small Elephant Hawkmoth new for the year. Common Blue are now on the wing.

Hooded Crow reappears

Good numbers of breeding warblers

21st May 2019 – bright and sunny NW3/4
Offshore
Early morning (0630-0730) produced 640 Guillemot, 85 Sandwich Tern, 48 Manx Shearwater, 20 Gannet, 16 Common Scoter, 13 Razorbill, 4 Puffin, 3 Kittiwake, 3 Red-throated Diver and a Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
Two Spotted Flycatcher were the only migrant passerines logged.
Diurnal Migration
Four House Martin flew in off the sea.
Breeding Birds
Good numbers of warblers are breeding on the island with the following population estimates 105-115 pairs Sedge Warbler, 105-115 pairs Whitethroat, 55-60 pairs Willow Warbler, 30-35 pairs Blackcap, 25-30 pairs Lesser Whitethroat, 7-8 pairs Chiffchaff, 6-7 pairs Grasshopper Warbler and 5-6 pairs Reed Warbler.

Roof-top gull census

20th May 2019 – bright and sunny NW2/3

Early morning (0630-0730) produced 150 Guillemot, 90 Sandwich Tern, 24 Gannet, 12 Common Scoter, 11 Manx Shearwater, 7 Puffin, 6 Razorbill and single Red-throated Diver and Fulmar.

A Spotted Flycatcher and 2 Wheatear were the only migrant passerines logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 6 Whimbrel.
Breeding Birds
A census of the roof-top nesting gulls on urban Walney Island has revealed Herring Gull (76 pairs), Lesser Black-backed Gull (25 pairs) and Great Black-backed Gull (1 pair).
Butterflies and Moths
The moth trap held Lime-speck Pug while the first Dingy Skipper are now on the wing.
Breeding Birds
Roof top nesting Great Black-backed Gull, despite the deterrent measures in place!

Scaup and Short-eared Owl

19th May 2019 – overcast then sunny NW1/2
Offshore
Early morning (0630-0730) produced 145 Sandwich Tern, 47 Arctic Tern, 40 Guillemot, 28 Razorbill, 25 Gannet, 23 Kittiwake and single Common Tern and Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Three Spotted Flycatcher were the only migrant passerine logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 4 Gadwall (2 males + 2 females) and a drake Scaup while 2 Whimbrel were the best of the rest.
Miscellaneous
A Short-eared Owl was hunting mid-morning and a Buzzard flew southeast over the island.
Moths
At last the moth trap has come to life in the last few nights with Common Swift, Brimstone, Common Carpet, Silver-ground Carpet, Heart and Dart, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Ruby Tiger, Bright-line Brown-eye, Marbled Coronet, Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Clouded-bordered Brindle, Spectacle, Gold-spot, Large Yellow Underwing and Poplar Hawk-moth all new for the year.

Very quiet over the sea early morning (0615-0715) with just 110 Sandwich Tern, 12 Gannet and a Red-throated Diver.

Two Wheatear were the only migrant passerines logged.

Three Swift and a Lesser Redpoll were amongst a continued trickle of Swallow.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 500 Sanderling and 12 Whimbrel.

The Hooded Crow put in another appearance.

Velvet Scoter

17th May 2019 – early rain clearing NE1/2
Offshore
Early morning observations in persistent rain (0630-0830) revealed 300 Sandwich Tern, 148 Common Scoter, 13 Gannet, 7 Manx Shearwater, 3 Arctic Tern and single Common Tern and Red-throated Diver. Later observations revealed that the huge flock of Common Scoter remains in the mouth of Morecambe Bay which held at least one Velvet Scoter. Also seen were 42 Arctic Tern and 24 Little Tern.

A Spotted Flycatcher was the only migrant passerine logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 650 Sanderling, 5 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Whimbrel.

Puffin back on menu

16th May 2019 – bright and sunny SE3/4
Offshore
After a blank day yesterday Puffin was back on the menu (0620-0720) with 5 birds logged. Also seen were 125 Guillemot, 120 Sandwich Tern, 26 Gannet, 12 Razorbill, 9 Kittiwake, 3 Red-throated Diver and 2 Manx Shearwater.
Grounded Migrants
A Spotted Flycatcher was logged.

Arctic Skua

15th May 2019 – bright and sunny SE2
Offshore
An Arctic Skua was the highlight of early morning observations (0600-0700). Also seen were 190 Guillemot, 160 Sandwich Tern, 38 Gannet, 22 Manx Shearwater, 22 Razorbill, 15 Kittiwake, 6 Common Scoter, 5 Common Tern and a Red-throated Diver.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 680 Knot and 500 Sanderling.
Miscellaneous
A day flying Barn Owl was the best of the rest.

Velvet Scoters and Puffins

14th May 2019 – bright and sunny SE2
Offshore
Early morning observations (0600-0700) were highlighted by 7 Puffin and 2 Velvet Scoter. Also seen were 305 Guillemot, 51 Sandwich Tern, 32 Manx Shearwater, 32 Manx Shearwater, 23 Common Scoter, 22 Razorbill, 20 Gannet, 5 Kittiwake, 2 Red-throated Diver, 2 Common Tern and a Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
Another Whinchat was logged.
Butterflies
The first Holly Blue is now on the wing.

Puffin run continues

13th May 2019 – bright and sunny SE2 later

Early morning observations (0630-0730) again provided variety rather than quantity with 300 Guillemot, 63 Manx Shearwater, 45 Sandwich Tern, 29 Kittiwake, 24 Gannet, 15 Common Scoter, 10 Razorbill, 5 Red-throated Diver and continuing the recent excellent run of sightings 9 Puffin.
Grounded Migrants
Three Whinchat were amongst 8 Wheatear and a single Spotted Flycatcher was also logged.
Diurnal Migration
Swallow continue to trickle through, amongst which were single Tree Pipit, House Martin and Siskin.
Wildfowl and Waders
Two late Wigeon and 4 Common Sandpiper were seen.
Breeding Birds
There are now 5 Reed Warbler holding territory on the island.
Butterflies
Wall Brown and Small Heath have now emerged.

Hooded Crow and Velvet Scoters

12th May 2019 – bright and sunny/NE1, WNW3/4 later
Offshore
Early morning observations (0620-0720) provided variety rather than quantity with 100 Guillemot, 82 Common Scoter, 19 Sandwich Tern, 17 Kittiwake, 15 Red-breasted Merganser, 14 Manx Shearwater, 13 Gannet, 2 Red-throated Diver, 2 Little Tern, 2 Puffin and single Arctic Skua and Fulmar. A second check on the evening tide revealed a huge flock of 12000 Common Scoter in the mouth of Morecambe Bay, amongst which were at least 12 Velvet Scoter.
Grounded Migrants
Single Spotted Flycatcher, Garden Warbler, White Wagtail and Yellow Wagtail were amongst 20 Wheatear and 10 Willow Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
Swallow continue to trickle through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Just 21 Whimbrel were logged.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow put in another appearance.

Migrants involved single Red Admiral, Silver Y and Dark Swordgrass.

An early morning check of the sea (0630-0800) on calm seas produced just 80 Sandwich Tern, 36 Guillemot, 22 Gannet, 14 Common Scoter, 9 Kittiwake, 7 Puffin, 7 Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Red-throated Diver and 3 Manx Shearwater.
Grounded Migrants
A Whinchat was amongst 10 Wheatear, otherwise limited to a single Spotted Flycatcher.
Diurnal Migration
Two Tree Pipit and 6 House Martin were amongst 50 Swallow.
Mammals
A Harbour Porpoise was again offshore.

An early morning check of the sea (0730-0830) produced 240 Sandwich Tern, 42 Gannet, 30 Guillemot, 26 Common Scoter, 10 Razorbill, 9 Red-throated Diver, 4 Manx Shearwater, 3 Arctic Tern, 3 Kittiwake and 2 Little Tern. Although 2 Puffin proved to be the highlight.
Grounded Migrants
A Whinchat was amongst 26 Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Sightings involved 3 Tree Pipit, 3 Lesser Redpoll and single Swift and House Martin amongst a trickle of Swallow.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 41 Whimbrel.

Velvet Scoters

9th May 2019 – overcast/rain NE3/4
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea at low tide (0630-0730) produced 480 Sandwich Tern, 55 Gannet, 14 Common Scoter, 10 Manx Shearwater, 9 Arctic Tern, 3 Guillemot and 3 Red-breasted Merganser. Later observations on the flooding tide produced at least 10 Velvet Scoter and a drake Scaup amongst a huge flock of 6000 Common Scoter congregated in the mouth of Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 40 Sandwich Tern, 7 Little Tern and 3 Arctic Tern.
Grounded Migrants
The male Firecrest continues to hold territory in the observatory garden while grounded birds included 5 Wheatear, 4 Willow Warbler, 3 White Wagtail and single Yellow Wagtail, Spotted Flycatcher, Whinchat and Tree Pipit.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 20 Whimbrel and a Common Sandpiper.
Mammals
The early morning seawatch was firstly interrupted by a Harbour Porpoise and later by a pod of 8 Bottle-nosed Dolphin.

Black Terns

8th May 2019 – overcast/rain soon ENE3/4
Offshore
Early morning observations saw five species of tern recorded (0630-0730) with 226 Sandwich Tern, 12 Arctic Tern, 2 Common Tern, 2 Little Tern and 2 Black Tern logged. Also seen were 25 Common Scoter, 15 Gannet and 2 Red-breasted Merganser before the rain set in.
Grounded Migrants
The male Firecrest was still singing in the observatory garden.
Diurnal Migration
Two Swift flew in off the sea.
Wildfowl and Waders
Only 6 Whimbrel were of note.

Territorial Firecrest

7th May 2019 – sunny spells V1
Offshore
Early morning sightings (0645-0745) included 220 Sandwich Tern, 185 Common Scoter, 10 Gannet, 6 Little Tern, 4 Red-throated Diver, 2 Arctic Tern and 2 Puffin.
Grounded Migrants
A male Firecrest was singing in the observatory garden and the supporting cast involved 17 Wheatear, 5 White Wagtail, 3 Willow Warbler and single Yellow Wagtail, Chiffchaff and Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 65 Pink-footed Geese headed north along with a solitary Lesser Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 2310 Dunlin, 620 Knot, 75 Grey Plover, 40 Bar-tailed Godwit and 17 Whimbrel.
Breeding Birds
The first juvenile Stonechats have now fledged with three broods seen.

Hooded Crow lingers

6th May 2019 – sunny spells N2 then WNW3

Slightly more activity over the sea today with early morning sightings (0630-0730) yielding 220 Guillemot, 87 Common Scoter, 60 Sandwich Tern, 43 Razorbill, 40 Kittiwake, 31 Gannet, 3 Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Arctic Tern, 2 Manx Shearwater and a Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A few Wheatear were seen.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 600 Knot, 200 Sanderling and 22 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
Though mobile the Hooded Crow remained.

Short-eared Owl and Hooded Crow

5th May 2019 – overcast/calm, bright and sunny later NW3/4

A look over the sea (0630-0730) produced 100 Sandwich Tern, 48 Common Scoter, 26 Kittiwake, 9 Gannet, 8 Red-throated Diver, 6 Guillemot and a Little Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Little of note with just 18 Wheatear, 5 White Wagtail and single Willow Warbler and Blackcap logged.
Diurnal Migration
Two Lesser Redpoll and a Siskin were amongst a trickle of Swallow and a skein of 186 Pink-footed Geese headed north.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl involved 3 Pink-footed Geese and a dark-bellied Brent Goose. Waders included a record breaking 212 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
The day’s highlights were provided by single Short-eared Owl and Hooded Crow. Two Raven were the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
The first Red Admiral of the year was logged and the moth trap held a Pebble Prominent.

Wheatears reappear in force

4th May 2019 – bright and sunny N1/2/3/4
Offshore
Very quiet over the sea (0630-0700) with just 25 Sandwich Tern, 22 Guillemot, 12 Kittiwake and single Shoveler and Red-throated Diver recorded.
Grounded Migrants
Wheatear reappeared in force with 41 birds logged, also seen were 4 White Wagtail and single Spotted Flycatcher and Willow Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
Only represented by a single Lesser Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 400 Sanderling, 52 Whimbrel and 6 Golden Plover.

Wood Warbler

3rd May 2019 – showers NE2/1
Offshore
Generally quiet over the sea (0630-0730) with just 126 Sandwich Tern, 60 Common Scoter, 13 Guillemot, 6 Gannet, 4 Kittiwake, 2 Arctic Skua, 2 Red-throated Diver and single Fulmar and Little Tern logged.
Grounded Migrants
A Wood Warbler was amongst 10 Willow Warbler while additional sightings included 10 Wheatear and 4 White Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 500 Knot, 220 Sanderling, 30 Grey Plover and 18 Whimbrel.
Ringing
A colour-ringed Great Black-backed Gull appears to have Isle of Man origins.

Early morning observations on the rising tide (0630-0730) produced 176 Sandwich Tern, 133 Guillemot, 113 Common Scoter, 40 Gannet, 19 Kittiwake, 14 Red-throated Diver, 10 Arctic Tern, 5 Razorbill, 3 Puffin and single Little Tern and Manx Shearwater.
Grounded Migrants
A very light sprinkling of newly arrived migrants included 6 Wheatear, 2 Blackcap and 2 Willow Warbler.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 1000 Dunlin, 600 Knot, 300 Sanderling, 28 Whimbrel and 8 Golden Plover.
Miscellaneous
Single Peregrine and Raven were the best of the rest.

Flame Shoulder and Lychnis were new for the year.

First Swifts and Garden Warbler

1st May 2019 – overcast/light rain clearing later V1
Offshore
A scan of the sea revealed 3 Little Tern.
Grounded Migrants
A light sprinkling of newly arrived migrants included 10 Willow Warbler, 6 Wheatear, 2 Blackcap and single Spotted Flycatcher, Chiffchaff and Garden Warbler – the latter the first of the year.
Diurnal Migration
Three Swift were new for the year and 2 Lesser Redpoll were the best of the rest.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 8 Whimbrel and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Two Reed Warbler are now on territory. Blackcap is a relatively recent colonist of the island and remarkably around 20 territorial males are now present on the island.
Butterflies and Moths
A field record of Pale Tussock outshone the moth trap which continues to provide little reward.
