Productivity amongst the Eider colony continues to provide concern with just 17 young counted.

A group of 8 Raven were logged.

An early morning check of the sea (0700-0800) was highlighted by 3 Puffins heading into Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 26 Common Scoter, 18 Sandwich Tern, 16 Gannet, 6 Manx Shearwater and a Red-breasted Merganser.

Puffins but no Starling

There were no reports today of the Rose-coloured Starling in the dunes between the lighthouse and ruined gun emplacement at South Walney Nature Reserve.
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea before the heat haze kicked in (0630-0830) was highlighted by 4 Puffins heading into Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 80 Common Scoter, 70 Sandwich Tern, 11 Gannet and a Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
Single Cuckoo and Wheatear were logged.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 80 Swift flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The summering drake Wigeon remains in residence and returning waders included 2 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and the leucistic Curlew.
Miscellaneous
A Peregrine and 2 Raven were the best of the rest.

Diurnal Migration
A total of 12 Swift flew through.
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea before the heat haze kicked in (0800-0900) was highlighted by a female Long-tailed Duck and redhead Goosander. Also seen were 67 Sandwich Tern, 23 Common Scoter, 16 Gannet, 3 Little Tern and a Manx Shearwater.
Wildfowl and Waders
The summering drake Wigeon remains in residence and a Greenshank was logged.
Dragonflies
Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Brown Hawker, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Blue Damselfly and Blue-tailed Damselfly were all logged.

A check of the sea (0700-0900) revealed 215 Manx Shearwater, 200 Common Scoter, 61 Sandwich Tern, 35 Gannet, 18 Kittiwake, 18 Guillemot and single Great Skua, Goosander and Arctic Tern.
Wildfowl and Waders
The summering drake Wigeon remains in residence and Teal numbers are beginning to slowly build with 7 birds logged.
Miscellaneous
A Peregrine was the best of the rest.

The first Shelduck and Tufted Duck broods have now emerged.
Dragonflies
The first Emperor Dragonflies are now on the wing.

A check of the sea (0630-07300) revealed a single Puffin heading towards the mouth of Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 120 Common Scoter, 29 Gannet, 20 Manx Shearwater, 18 Sandwich Tern, 14 Guillemot, 3 Razorbill and a Little Tern.

Hoopoe, Rosy Starling and Puffins

Rarities
The Rose-coloured Starling was again present feeding with a c30 Starling in the dunes between the lighthouse and ruined gun emplacement at South Walney Nature Reserve. Although elusive, the Hoopoe was also seen again mid- morning at Rape Haw in the adjacent gorse patch.
Offshore
A check of the sea (0600-0800) revealed 10 Puffin (groups of 4 & 6) heading towards the mouth of Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 200 Common Scoter, 15 Sandwich Tern, 10 Manx Shearwater, 5 Teal, 4 Guillemot and 2 Gannet.
Diurnal Migration
Five Swift and a Lesser Redpoll flew through..
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included the summering male Wigeon while waders included 1550 Knot, 3 Dunlin and 2 Turnstone.
Miscellaneous
The long staying Hooded Crow put in another appearance.
Moths
Day flying moths included 150 Narrow-bordered five-spot Burnet and 30 Cinnabar.

Hoopoe and Rosy Starling

The Rose-coloured Starling was again present feeding with a c40 Starling in the dunes between the lighthouse and ruined gun emplacement at South Walney Nature Reserve. In addition, a Hoopoe was seen early morning at Snab Pont in the horse paddocks adjacent to South End Bungalow.
Offshore
A quick check of the sea revealed 10 Little Tern and 2 Common Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Single Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff were new in.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included the summering male Wigeon while waders included 8000 Knot and the first Greenshank of the autumn.
Miscellaneous
The long staying Hooded Crow and a family party of 5 Raven were the best of the rest.
Butterflies
Migrants involved 30 Red Admiral and a Painted Lady.

Wildfowl included the summering male Wigeon.
Mammals
Several pods comprising a total of 14 Bottle-nosed Dolphin were offshore early morning.

Though elusive the Rose-coloured Starling was again present late-afternoon again with a small group of Starling feeding near the lighthouse at South Walney Nature Reserve.

Observations over the sea (0730-0830) revealed 43 Sandwich Tern, 7 Gannet, 3 Razorbill and single Red-throated Diver and Fulmar.

Observations over the sea (0630-0730) revealed 33 Sandwich Tern, 28 Common Scoter, 21 Canada Goose, 18 Gannet, 9 Guillemot, 3 Manx Shearwater and single Fulmar and Little Tern.
Grounded Migrants
The late moving male Blackcap remains and a Spotted Flycatcher was new in – with spring passage mostly missed this was the first of the year.

Wildfowl included the male Wigeon and a Teal.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow put in another appearance and a Peregrine was the best of the rest.

An adult Rose-coloured Starling was amongst a small flock of Starling feeding near the Oyster Farm at South Walney Nature Reserve late-afternoon.

Observations over the sea (0730-0900) produced 110 Sandwich Tern, 57 Common Scoter, 29 Manx Shearwater, 3 Gannet, 2 Kittiwake and a Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
A late moving male Blackcap was logged.

Wader sightings were dominated by 8000 Knot and wildfowl included 3 Teal and a male Wigeon.

The 3 Raven are still in residence.

The lack of visitors to South Walney Nature Reserve has certainly benefitted the breeding waders with improved productivity noted amongst the Oystercatcher and Ringed Plover population.

Waders included 270 Sanderling and the drake Wigeon continues in residence.

The roof-top nesting pair of Great Black-backed Gulls located last year were again in residence on the centre of the island.

Herons have again bred successfully on the island with 6 juveniles seen.

Back in business

1st June 2020 – bright and sunny SE2/3

A late Lesser Redpoll flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
A drake Garganey was the pick of the wildfowl which also included single Wigeon and Shoveler. Waders were represented by a Little Stint along with an impressive 8000 Knot and 100 Sanderling.

The long-staying Hooded Crow is still in residence.
