Rock Pipits galore

21st February 2015 – sun and showers NW4/5
Offshore
A check over the sea produced 2 Shag, 2 Red-throated Diver and a solitary Common Scoter.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 181 pale-bellied birds while waders included 5 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and a Jack Snipe.
Miscellaneous
The high tides flushed 60 Rock Pipit from the island’s saltmarshes and 100 Twite were logged. The first wave of returning Lesser Black-backed Gull were noted.
Ringing
At least one of the Rock Pipits was found to be colour ringed – hopefully its origins can be revealed.

20th February 2015 – sunny spells W3
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 100 pale-bellied birds and 39 Pintail were recorded while waders included 1000 Golden Plover.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains in residence and at least 23 Little Egret remain.

Further hints of spring

15th February 2015 – hazy sun SE1/2
Diurnal Migration
A solitary Pink-footed Goose flew over.
Grounded Migrants
There was another small influx of Blackbird and Song Thrush and a single Long-tailed Tit called in.
Wildfowl and Waders
The 2 Long-tailed Duck and Scaup remain while waders included 6 Greenshank and 2 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A flock of 110 Twite was logged and several Skylarks have now burst into song.

14th February 2015 – bright and sunny NE3
Offshore
A check over the sea produced 19 Red-breasted Merganser, 16 Common Scoter, 4 Red-throated Diver and 3 Shag.
Diurnal Migration
A group of 14 Pink-footed Geese and 6 Siskin flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 100 pale-bellied birds and additional wildfowl included 6 Barnacle Geese, 2 Long-tailed Duck and 2 Scaup. Wader sightings included 3000 Knot and 3 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow is still in residence while 70 Twite and 22 Little Egret were also logged.

10th February 2015 – overcast/calm
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 90 pale-bellied and 10 dark-bellied birds and additional wildfowl included 2 Long-tailed Duck, 2 female Scaup and 80 Pintail. Wader sightings included 1000 Golden Plover, 6 Greenshank and 2 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A Peregrine stalked the island’s waders.

Siskins provide an early hint of spring

8th February 2015 – overcast/fog//calm
Grounded Migrants
February often provides some early evidence of some passerine movement and although visibility was much reduced by dense fog all day there were hints of migration. There was an increase in both Blackbird and Song Thrush numbers and a group of 16 Siskin were logged.

Brent Goose origins revealed

7th February 2015 – overcast/calm
Offshore
An early morning check of the calm sea revealed 19 Red-throated Diver, 10 Common Scoter and 3 Shag.
Diurnal Migration
Two flocks of Pink-footed Geese totalling 130 birds flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 183 pale-bellied and 20 dark-bellied Brent Geese and additional wildfowl included 85 Pintail. Wader sightings included a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
A small flock of 10 Twite and single Merlin and Little Owl were the best of the rest.
Ringing
The Brent Goose flock contained at least one colour-ringed bird, initial enquires show that it had initially been ringed in Iceland during its spring migration.

High numbers of Brent Geese

6th February 2015 – overcast/calm
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea revealed 3 Shag, 2 Red-throated Diver and a Razorbill.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 206 pale-bellied Brent Geese, the 2 Long-tailed Duck and 2 female Scaup continue to linger and additional wildfowl included 76 Pintail and 3 Shoveler. Wader sightings were led by 8000 Knot, 3 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and a Purple Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
A small group of Tree Sparrows continue to winter, 70 Twite were recorded and 2 Raven were the best of the rest.
