A scan of the sea produced 125 Sandwich Tern, 12 Shag, 12 Common Scoter, 4 Gannet and an Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
A quiet day with just single Whitethroat and Willow Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
Sightings included 10 Tree Sparrow and a Yellow Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first Pintail has returned and waders included a Ruff.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin was the best of the rest.

Ruff

21st August 2025 – overcast/calm
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 14 Willow Warbler, 4 Sedge Warbler and 2 Whitethroat. Additional sightings included 11 Wheatear, 3 White Wagtail and 2 Spotted Flycatcher.
Diurnal Migration
Morning totals included 60 Tree Sparrow and 4 Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included single Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
Raptors involved 3 Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawk.
Butterflies and Moths
The light trap held 147 moths of 46 species with migrants represented by 16 Rusty Dot Pearl and 3 Silver Y while Svensons Copper Underwing, Pink-barred Sallow and Square-spot Rustic were new for the year.

Mediterranean Gull and Merlin

20th August 2025 – sunny spells ENE2/4
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0630-0730) produced 468 Sandwich Tern, 160 Manx Shearwater, 31 Common Scoter, 14 Gannet, 6 Guillemot and 3 Little Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Ten White Wagtail were amongst 30 Pied Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow trickled through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 2500 Oystercatcher, 130 Turnstone, 36 Greenshank, 4 Black-tailed Godwit and a Common Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
A first-year Mediterranean Gull was on the eastern shore and a Merlin was the best of the rest.

Osprey

19th August 2025 – overcast/early shower NE2/4
Offshore
A scan over the sea revealed just a few Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 7 Willow Warbler, 3 Whitethroat and a Sedge Warbler. Additional sightings included 6 Yellow Wagtail amongst 55 Pied Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
Morning totals involved 32 Tree Sparrow.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 300 Sanderling, 17 Greenshank and a Ruff.
Miscellaneous
An Osprey fishing along the east shore was the best of the rest.

Marsh Harriers remain

18th August 2025 – sunny spells E2/4
Offshore
A check of the sea revealed 40 Sandwich Tern, 18 Common Scoter, 14 Little Tern and 10 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
A Spotted Flycatcher was seen while warblers involved 3 Willow Warbler and 2 Whitethroat.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 400 Swallows was logged along with 7 Sand Martin, 2 Tree Pipit, 2 Yellow Wagtail and 2 Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
A Wigeon was amongst 36 Teal and waders included 500 Sanderling.
Miscellaneous
Raptors involved 4 Kestrel, 3 Sparrowhawk and 2 Marsh Harrier.
Butterflies and Moths
The light trap held 179 moths of 55 species with migrants represented by 19 Rusty Dot Pearl, 4 Silver Y and 2 Rush Veneer.

Whinchat and Merlin

17th August 2025 – warm and sunny/hazy SE2/3
Offshore
A scan over the sea revealed 150 Sandwich Tern, 14 Little Tern and 2 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 8 Whitethroat, 3 Willow Warbler, 3 Sedge Warbler and single Blackcap and Lesser Whitethroat. Additional sightings included a single Whinchat amongst 23 Wheatear and 4 White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
Morning totals involved 200 Swallow, 12 Sand Martin, 2 Yellow Wagtail and single Grey Wagtail and Tree Pipit.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first Shoveler of the autumn appeared and waders included 200 Ringed Plover and 18 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Great White Egret, Marsh Harrier and the first Merlin of the autumn were the best of the rest.

Spotted Flycatcher and Yellow Wagtail

16th August 2025 – sunny spells/warm SW1/2
Offshore
A scan of the sea revealed 100 Sandwich Tern, 8 Little Tern, 7 Common Scoter, 5 Gannet and a Shag.
Grounded Migrants
A Spotted Flycatcher was seen while warblers involved 5 Willow Warbler, 4 Whitethroat and a Sedge Warbler and 4 Wheatear, 2 White Wagtail and a Yellow Wagtail were amongst 65 Pied Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 120 Swallows trickled through along with 18 Tree Sparrow, 3 Sand Martin and a Tree Pipit.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 1000 Sanderling.
Miscellaneous
Raptors were limited to 4 Kestrel and a Sparrowhawk

Two Migrant Hawker were logged.

15th August 2025 – warm and sunny/hazy WNW2/4

Another scan of the calm distant sea produced just 37 Sandwich Tern, 7 Little Tern, 7 Shag and 3 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 7 Willow Warbler, 6 Whitethroat and 4 Sedge Warbler. Additional sightings included 35 Pied Wagtail and single Whinchat, Wheatear and Spotted Flycatcher.
Diurnal Migration
Morning totals involved 50 Tree Sparrow, 2 Grey Wagtail and a Yellow Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first Wigeon of the autumn appeared and waders included 2000 Sanderling, 20 Greenshank, 3 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Whimbrel and a Common Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
A Peregrine was the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
The light trap held Blood-vein and Frosted Orange – both new for the year and migrants again represented by several Rusty Dot Pearl.

Spotted Redshank

14th August 2025 – sunny spells/warm SW1/2
Offshore
A scan of the sea revealed 200 Sandwich Tern, 12 Common Scoter 10 Shag, 4 Little Tern and 2 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 11 Willow Warbler, 5 Whitethroat, 3 Sedge Warbler and the lingering Cetti’s Warbler while single Spotted Flycatcher and Goldcrest were the first of the autumn.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallows trickled through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included a Spotted Redshank.
Miscellaneous
Raptors were limited to Kestrel and Sparrowhawk

The first Migrant Hawker was logged.

Cetti’s Warbler reappears

13th August 2025 – hot and sunny V1/2
Offshore
Another scan of the calm but distant sea produced 130 Sandwich Tern, 10 Shag and 4 Little Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 6 Whitethroat, 5 Willow Warbler, 3 Sedge Warbler and a Cetti’s Warbler while 5 White Wagtail and 3 Wheatear were amongst 32 Pied Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
Morning totals included 190 Swallow, 40 Sand Martin, 10 Tree Sparrow and 2 Tree Pipit.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 26 Greenshank and single Whimbrel, Black-tailed Godwit and Common Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
Raptors involved 3 Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawk.
Butterflies and Moths
Four Painted Lady were seen and the light trap held 72 moths of 36 species with Chevron new for the year and migrants represented by several Rusty Dot Pearl.

Marsh Harrier doubles up

12th August 2025 – sunny spells/hot E1/2
Offshore
A scan of the sea revealed 600 Sandwich Tern, 7 Shag, 4 Little Tern and a Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 5 Willow Warbler, 5 Whitethroat and a Sedge Warbler while 2 Wheatear and a White Wagtail were amongst 17 Pied Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
Morning totals of 800 Swallow, 80 Sand Martin, 15 Tree Sparrow, 10 Pied Wagtail and 7 Tree Pipit were logged. In addition, 100 Swift hawked overhead in the evening.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 3 Ruff and 2 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
Two Marsh Harrier were together over the island

Cetti’s Warbler

11th August 2025 – overcast/drizzle then sunny spells V1
Offshore
Observations over a calm sea revealed 58 Common Scoter, 40 Little Tern, 30 Sandwich Tern, 9 Shag and 4 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers were highlighted by a Cetti’s Warbler amongst 16 Whitethroat, 5 Sedge Warbler and 3 Willow Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
Single Yellow Wagtail and House Martin were amongst a trickle of Swallow.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 5 Whimbrel and 2 Ruff.
Miscellaneous
The Marsh Harrier remains.
Mammals
Six Bottle-nosed Dolphin were offshore.

10th August 2025 – sunny spells V1/2
Offshore
A build-up of Sandwich Tern saw 1000 birds logged. Also seen were 80 Common Scoter, 22 Little Tern, 5 Shag and 2 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 16 Willow Warbler, 13 Whitethroat and 5 Sedge Warbler. Also seen were 2 Wheatear and 2 Robin.
Diurnal Migration
Totals included 30 Swallow, 10 Tree Pipit, 5 Sand Martin and single Yellow Wagtail and Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 15 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Bar-tailed Godwit and 2 Ruff.
Miscellaneous
Raptors involved 3 Kestrel, 2 Sparrowhawk and a Marsh Harrier.
Butterflies and Moths
Three Painted Lady were seen and the light trap saw Light Brown Apple Moth as the dominant species while migrants involved Rush Veneer and Silver Y.

Arctic Skua

9th August 2025 – overcast SW4/6
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0700-0900) produced 64 Manx Shearwater, 63 Common Scoter, 60 Little Tern, 36 Sandwich Tern, 11 Gannet, 2 Shag and an Arctic Skua.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 36 Greenshank was amongst 1030 Redshank and a single Whimbrel was seen.

Black-tailed Godwits

8th August 2025 – overcast/showers WSW4/6
Offshore
Observations over the sea (045-0745) revealed 41 Common Scoter, 9 Sandwich Tern, 6 Manx Shearwater and a Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 2 Willow Warbler and a Sedge Warbler.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 15 Black-tailed Godwit.

Raptors involved 3 Kestrel and single Sparrowhawk and Peregrine

Storm Petrel and Red-throated Diver

7th August 2025 – rain then showers clearing SW4/6
Offshore
As the rain cleared to showers observations over the sea (0700-0800) revealed 43 Manx Shearwater, 18 Common Scoter, 15 Gannet, 11 Sandwich Tern, 6 Little Tern and single Storm Petrel and Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 2 Willow Warbler and a Whitethroat.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 10 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Butterflies and Moths
The light trap attracted 86 moths of 29 species with migrants represented by a Dark Sword-grass while Flame Shoulder was the dominant species

Arctic Skua

5th August 2025 – sun and showers W5/8
Offshore
Observations over the sea (1130-1230) produced 154 Sandwich Tern, 15 Little Tern, 10 Manx Shearwater, 7 Common Scoter, 4 Gannet and single Kittiwake, Guillemot and Arctic Skua.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains.
Ringing
A total of 21 colour-ringed birds were logged – many were gulls but three Sandwich Terns involved birds ringed as nestlings in colonies at Hodbarrow in Cumbria, Cemlyn Bay in North Wales and Blue Circle Island in Northern Ireland.

As the rain cleared to showers Storm Floris disappointed (1030-1230) with just 119 Gannet, 118 Manx Shearwater, 50 Common Scoter, 19 Sandwich Tern, 5 Fulmar and 3 Kittiwake logged.

Great Northern Diver and Storm Petrel

3rd August 2025 – rain clearing to sunny spells SW3/4
Offshore
The sea produced the days surprises with a summer plumaged Great Northern Diver and a single Storm Petrel amongst 130 Sandwich Tern, 43 Common Scoter, 22 Gannet, 20 Manx Shearwater and a Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Warblers involved 2 Willow Warbler and a Whitethroat.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included a solitary Whimbrel.
Mammals
A Weasel put in another appearance
Dragonflies
An Emperor Dragonfly was found ovipositing.
