31st August 2015 – overcast V1
Offshore
Only small numbers of Gannet and Sandwich Tern were offshore.
Grounded Migrants
A small fall produced 4 Pied Flycatcher along with 10 Willow Warbler, 6 Robin, 3 Whitethroat and single Whinchat, Reed Warbler, Goldcrest and Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Hirundines were on the move with 400 Swallow and 10 Sand Martin logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 6 Greenshank, 2 Ruff, 2 Whimbrel and single Green Sandpiper and Wood Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin was the best of the rest.
Ringing
A very poor month on the ringing front with the total of 79 birds of 17 species one of the worst August totals recorded in 50 years. A pitiful number of warbler species were trapped – a reflection of current trends! Individual species totals (retraps in brackets) were as follows: House Sparrow 33, Willow Warbler 10, Goldfinch 5 (1), Robin 4, Blackbird 4, Swallow 3, Wren 3, Linnet 3, Whitethroat 2, Goldcrest 2, Dunnock 2, Greenfinch 2, Blackcap 1, Pied Flycatcher 1, Meadow Pipit 1, Pied Wagtail 1 and Tree Sparrow 1.

Wood Sandpiper

30th August 2015 – sunny spells S1
Offshore
A calm sea provided 125 Sandwich Tern, 55 Common Scoter and small numbers of Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
A few more birds were in evidence than of late with 14 Robin, 4 Willow Warbler, 3 Goldcrest, 3 Whitethroat and single Sedge Warbler and Wheatear logged.
Diurnal Migration
A light passage was noted with 150 Swallow, 10 Meadow Pipit, 6 Grey Wagtail, 6 Pied/White Wagtail, 5 Reed Bunting, 3 Sand Martin and 2 Tree Pipit recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 20 Greenshank, 4 Ruff, 4 Whimbrel and a Wood Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
Raptors involved 2 Merlin, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

Cory’s Shearwater

29th August 2015 – sun and showers SSW4/5
Rarities
A single Cory’s Shearwater showed well as it moved slowly south at 0745.
Offshore
Additional birds seen (0730-0900) involved 300 Common Scoter, 90 Gannet, 35 Sandwich Tern, 14 Manx Shearwater, 5 Kittiwake and single Great Skua, Fulmar and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Again little evidence of any newly grounded birds with just single Whitethroat and Willow Warbler logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 200 Ringed Plover, 110 Sanderling, 82 Grey Plover, 50 Knot, 22 Greenshank, 12 Black-tailed Godwit and single Common Sandpiper and Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
At least 9 Little Egret were seen.

Still slow going!

28th August 2015 – sunny spells and showers SSW4/5
Offshore
An early afternoon check of the sea (1245-1345) yielded 25 Gannet, 24 Common Scoter, 10 Manx Shearwater, 9 Sandwich Tern and 2 Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
A Whinchat was amongst 6 Stonechat and 3 Wheatear.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 3 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Greenshank and a Common Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
Good numbers of Little Egret continue to perform.
Moths
A Square spot Rustic was newly emerged.

Little Stint

26th August 2015 – rain then bright and sunny SSW3/4
Offshore
The sea continues to provide small numbers of Gannet and Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
A Whinchat was the pick of a poor selection.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow and Sand Martin were in evidence.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wigeon and Teal numbers begin to build and waders included 10 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A gathering of 14 Little Egret were logged.
Moths
A Campion was amongst a small moth catch.

Citrine Wagtail

22nd August 2015 – overcast/showers then rain SE1
Rarities
Autumn finally burst into life when a juvenile Citrine Wagtail was found early morning. The bird showed well and called frequently between 0730 and 0740 before flying low north. Despite searching the bird could not be relocated.
Offshore
The sea provided 60 Common Scoter and small numbers of Gannet and Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Despite the early morning excitement only 15 Wheatear were seen along with 3 Willow Warbler, 3 Robin and single Sedge Warbler and Whitethroat.
Diurnal Migration
There was some evidence of movement with 66 House Martin, 50 Swallow, 12 Sand Martin and 3 Swift recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included Greenshank and Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
Raptors included Merlin, Peregrine and Sparrowhawk.

Slow going

21st August 2015 – overcast/showers S1/2
Offshore
The rising tide produced 125 Sandwich Tern, 18 Gannet, 11 Manx Shearwater and 3 Common Scoter.
Grounded Migrants
Only 6 Wheatear, 2 Robin and a Whitethroat were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 240 Turnstone, 14 Greenshank, 2 Ruff and single Black-tailed Godwit and Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
Little Egret continue to show well.

Arctic Skua

18th August 2015 – bright and sunny start/cloud late WNW2/3
Offshore
An evening watch on the falling tide produced 30 Sandwich Tern, 10 Gannet and a dark phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
Again very limited fare with just 3 Wheatear, 2 Whitethroat and single Whinchat and Willow Warbler logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 4 Whimbrel and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Little Egret remain prominent.
Moths
Rosy Rustic, Six stripe Rustic and Hedge Rustic are all newly emerged.

Spotted Redshank

17th August 2015 – bright and sunny WNW2/3
Offshore
A few Sandwich Ten were again offshore.
Grounded Migrants
A bit of variety but no quantity with 10 Willow Warbler, 4 Wheatear, 2 Whitethroat and single Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 800 Dunlin, 6 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Greenshank and a Spotted Redshank.
Miscellaneous
A Peregrine was the best of the rest.

Garganey remains

16th August 2015 – sunny spells V1/2
Offshore
The sea provided 100 Sandwich Tern and a single Manx Shearwater.
Grounded Migrants
A Whinchat and the first Goldcrest of the autumn was amongst another poor showing involving just 5 Willow Warbler, 4 Wren, 4 Robin, 2 Sedge Warbler and a Whitethroat.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 20 Swallow and 5 Sand Martin were recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The drake Garganey remains and waders included 8 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and a Common Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
The Linnet flock has increased to 370 birds.
Moths
Mullein Wave, Rosy Rustic and Yellow-tail were new for the year.

Tree Pipit finally added to year list!

15th August 2015 – sunny spells NW2/3
Offshore
The sea provided 360 Sandwich Tern, 15 Common Scoter, 4 Manx Shearwater, 3 Arctic Tern and a solitary Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Again limited fare with just 7 Willow Warbler and single Garden Warbler and Robin logged.
Diurnal Migration
Two Tree Pipit flew through and 70 Swallow and 5 Sand Martin were recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The drake Garganey remains and waders included 5800 Oystercatcher, 1342 Curlew, 830 Redshank, 495 Sanderling, 375 Turnstone, 42 Grey Plover, 35 Golden Plover, 17 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Ruff.
Miscellaneous
A total of 12 Little Egret were seen.

Garganey new in

14th August 2015 – rain NW1/2/3
Offshore
Quiet over the sea early evening with just 16 Sandwich Tern, 4 Common Scoter and 3 Arctic Tern recorded.
Grounded Migrants
A Spotted Flycatcher was amongst 4 Willow Warbler, 3 Sedge Warbler and single Whitethroat and Robin.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 70 Swallow and 2 Sand Martin were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A drake Garganey was amongst a small influx of Teal and waders included 17 Greenshank, 3 Whimbrel and 2 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
At least 15 Little Egret are now present on the island.

First Robin of the autumn

13th August 2015 – bright and sunny SE1/2
Grounded Migrants
Again slim pickings with just 11 Willow Warbler a Whitethroat and the first Robin of the autumn logged.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 120 Swallow gathered and 6 Swift flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 4 Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
The Linnet flock increased to 320 birds.

Shoveler return

12th August 2015 – bright and sunny SW1/2
Grounded Migrants
Remaining quiet with just 6 Willow Warbler, 2 Sedge Warbler and a Whitethroat logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first 2 Shoveler have returned and waders included 4 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin stalked a flock of 200 Linnet.
Ringing
A colour-ringed Canada Goose was noted.

Only small numbers of Gannet, Common Scoter and Sandwich Tern were offshore late afternoon, although the Red Arrows performed well in the distance.

A hint of passage was provided by a few Swallow moving through.

Just one Willow Warbler was logged

Waders included 8 Greenshank, 4 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Ruff and single Green Sandpiper.

Little Egret remain prominent and 2 Raven were logged.

A hint of passage was provided by a few Sand Martin and Swallow moving through.

A few more warblers were evident than of late with 13 Willow Warbler, 9 Whitethroat, 9 Sedge Warbler and a Garden Warbler logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 160 Sanderling, 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Ruff and single Green Sandpiper and Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Raptors involved 5 Kestrel and single Merlin and Sparrowhawk.
Moths
The Crescent was newly emerged.

7th August 2015 – sunny spells SW2
Diurnal Migration
A hint of passage was provided by 20 Sand Martin and a Tree Sparrow.

Only 3 Willow Warbler and a Wheatear were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders continue to increase and the highlights involved 14 Greenshank, 10 Whimbrel, 2 Ruff and single Green Sandpiper and Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
At least 16 Little Egret are now on the island and the first Merlin has returned.
Moths
Immigrants were represented by a Bordered Straw.

5th August 2015 – sunny spells S4
Offshore
A flock of 200 Sandwich Tern roosted over the tide and 6 Gannet were logged.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to single Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat and Willow Warbler.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wader numbers continue to rise with 1000 Oystercatcher, 800 Redshank, 250 Knot, 240 Dunlin, 230 Turnstone, 40 Grey Plover, 14 Greenshank, 4 Whimbrel and a Ruff recorded.
Miscellaneous
At least 6 Little Egret are now in residence.
Butterflies and Moths
Fen Wainscot and Small Rufous were new for the year.

Yellow Wagtail

2nd August 2015 – overcast/showers SE4
Offshore
A raft of 4800 Eider were in the mouth of the bay at low tide along with 32 Sandwich Tern and 2 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to 2 Willow Warbler and a Whitethroat.
Diurnal Migration
A Yellow Wagtail was the highlight amongst a trickle of Swift and Swallow.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 10 Greenshank amongst 300 Redshank and 2 Whimbrel amongst large numbers of Curlew.
Miscellaneous
Several Little Egret continue in residence.
Butterflies and Moths
Least Yellow Underwing was new for the year.

Slow start to autumn

Morning observations (0730-0830) produced 150 Common Scoter, 80 Sandwich Tern, 71 Manx Shearwater, 33 Gannet and a Fulmar.

Limited to 3 Willow Warbler.
Miscellaneous
Several Little Egret continue to roam the island.
Butterflies and Moths
Comma and Grayling are now on the wing.
