Red-necked Grebe

A check of the sea (0830-0930) revealed a Red-necked Grebe feeding offshore along with 20 Common Scoter, 6 Red-throated Diver, 4 Shag and 4 Red-breasted Merganser.
Diurnal Migration
A Stock Dove continued the excellent run of sightings for this species through the autumn.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 3 Black-tailed Godwit while 4 Shoveler were logged.

Purple Sandpiper increase

Single Fieldfare and Mistle Thrush were recorded.
Diurnal Migration
Groups of 20 Pink-footed Geese and 9 Siskin moved through.

A flock of 21 Purple Sandpiper were logged.

High tides and Water Pipits

7th December 2021 – rain at times ESE6/7 gusting to 54mph

Two Water Pipits were amongst 6 Rock Pipit feeding in the flooded horse paddocks at Biggar at high tide.

The Brent Goose flock held 230 light-bellied birds.

Observations over the sea revealed 69 Common Scoter and 6 Shag.

A group of 4 Siskin flew over.

The Brent Goose flock held 301 light-bellied birds with 1,266 Wigeon, 458 Teal, 314 Shelduck and single Pink-footed Goose and Barnacle Goose also seen. Waders included 3,144 Dunlin, 1,494 Knot, 714 Golden Plover, 711 Curlew, 607 Lapwing, 403 Turnstone 93 Snipe, 7 Greenshank and 2 Black-tailed Godwit.

A total of 100 Twite were logged and single Merlin, Hooded Crow and Water Rail were the best of the rest.

Velvet Scoter

Observations over the sea (0845-0945) produced 60 Razorbill, 33 Common Scoter, 18 Red-throated Diver, 12 Shag, 10 Kittiwake, 3 Guillemot and single Velvet Scoter and Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to a single Redwing.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 351 light-bellied and 2 dark-bellied birds.

A Peregrine was the best of the rest.

Winter Gannets

Observations over the sea (0830-1030) produced 19 Shag, 9 Kittiwake, 9 Red-throated Diver, 5 Common Scoter, 3 Gannet and 2 Red-breasted Merganser.
Ringing
A colour ringed Brent Goose had previously been ringed at Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland on 16th October 2007 and has been seen at Walney every winter since.

Great Northern Diver and Hooded Crow

Observations over the sea (0800-0900) were led by a Great Northern Diver heading out of Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 20 Razorbill, 14 Common Scoter, 10 Red-throated Diver, 4 Red-breasted Merganser and 2 Guillemot.

Limited to 2 Lesser Redpoll and a Siskin.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 7 Whooper Swan.

The Hooded Crow put in another appearance.

Little Auk

18th November 2021 – overcast SW3/4/5

Observations over the sea on the rising tide (0800-1000) were led by a Little Auk flying into Morecambe Bay at 0820hrs. Also seen were 67 Common Scoter, 64 Razorbill, 41 Kittiwake, 14 Red-throated Diver, 3 Guillemot and a Red-breasted Merganser.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 115 Pintail.
Miscellaneous
The Twite flock continues to increase slowly with 50 birds logged.

A later than usual seawatch on the falling tide (1050-1250) revealed 248 Kittiwake, 30 Razorbill, 28 Common Scoter, 7 Red-throated Diver and single Gannet and Great Crested Grebe.

Waders included a Jack Snipe.

A few birds continue to move through, sightings included 315 Pink-footed Goose, 230 Woodpigeon, 20 Brambling, 15 Chaffinch, 10 Siskin, 7 Lesser Redpoll, 4 Stock Dove, 2 Tree Sparrow and a Rock Pipit.

At least 5 Shag were offshore early morning.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 33 Redwing, 19 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush and a Fieldfare. The only other evidence of grounded birds involved 3 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
A few birds remain on the move, sightings included 90 Woodpigeon, 65 Pink-footed Goose, 15 Chaffinch, 7 Brambling, 5 Lesser Redpoll, 4 Siskin and a Stock Dove.

Waders included 420 Turnstone, 7 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
Less frequently visited areas of the island revealed 3 Jay, 3 Bullfinch and 2 Coal Tit.

An early morning check over the sea (0800-0900) revealed 40 Common Scoter, 9 Razorbill, 2 Red-throated Diver and 2 Kittiwake.

Dusky and Yellow-browed Warblers

10th November 2021 – sunny spells/ calm
Rarities
A Dusky Warbler was calling frequently and showing occasionally from the reeds and scrub below the hide in the central marsh at South Walney Nature Reserve. View only from the fence and do not enter the restricted area. Also seen was a Yellow-browed Warbler – feeding in the bushes in the vicinity of the car park.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 21 Redwing, 8 Blackbird, 2 Fieldfare and a Mistle Thrush. Three Goldcrest were the only additional grounded birds
Diurnal Migration
A few birds remain on the move, sightings included 100 Pink-footed Goose, 14 Whooper Swan, 12 Lesser Redpoll, 11 Brambling, 5 Siskin, 3 Rock Pipit and a Stock Dove – by recent standards it has been an exceptional autumn for this species.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 5 Greenshank and 3 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
The Twite flock has increased to 30 birds while 6 Raven and 2 Water Rail were the best of the rest.

Great Northern Diver

Observations over the sea (0730-0930) were led by a Great Northern Diver heading into Morecambe Bay at 0830hrs. Also seen were 114 Common Scoter and single Red-throated Diver and Kittiwake.

A skein of 15 Pink-footed Geese flew through.

Morning thrushes involved 43 Redwing, 19 Fieldfare, 14 Blackbird and 2 Song Thrush.

A few species continue to move through with 2310 Starling, 66 Chaffinch, 64 Brambling, 60 Woodpigeon, 15 Greenfinch, 9 Siskin, 5 Lesser Redpoll, 2 Tree Sparrow and a Grey Wagtail logged.

Observations over the sea (1000-1100) revealed 29 Shag, 12 Razorbill, 3 Red-throated Diver, 3 Common Scoter and 3 Kittiwake.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 211 pale-bellied Brent Goose and 1325 Wigeon were logged. Waders included 3 Jack Snipe amongst 132 Snipe and 12 Greenshank amongst 1451 Redshank, along with, 6950 Oystercatcher, 980 Dunlin, 598 Curlew, 137 Grey Plover and 3 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
At least 49 Little Egret were along the eastern shore while 2 Water Rail and single Peregrine and Hooded Crow were the best of the rest.

A Water Pipit was amongst Rock Pipit in the horse fields at Biggar over the high tide.

A check of the sea at dawn revealed a post roost gathering of 37 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 65 Redwing, 33 Blackbird, 4 Fieldfare, 4 Song Thrush and 2 Mistle Thrush. Also seen were 2 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
The early morning drizzle put a dampener on sightings with just 230 Starling, 155 Jackdaw, 12 Whooper Swan, 7 Pink-footed Goose, 4 Brambling, 3 Tree Sparrow, 2 Siskin and 2 Lesser Redpoll logged.

The late autumn movement continues with 1160 Jackdaw, 440 Woodpigeon, 50 Tree Sparrow, 36 Carrion Crow, 33 Rook, 30 Chaffinch, 24 Redwing, 20 Pink-footed Goose, 19 Stock Dove, 15 Whooper Swan, 8 Siskin, 6 Brambling, 4 Fieldfare – the first of the autumn, 3 Lesser Redpoll and a Grey Wagtail.

The first real evidence of movement for two weeks saw 1520 Jackdaw, 114 Woodpigeon, 70 Chaffinch, 49 Skylark, 31 Tree Sparrow, 22 Carrion Crow, 17 Stock Dove, 17 Brambling, 6 Lesser Redpoll, 5 Siskin and 4 Greenfinch logged.

Purple Sandpiper and a late Arctic Tern

A check of the sea as the rain abated (1030-1130) produced 410 Razorbill, 78 Kittiwake, 45 Common Scoter, 9 Guillemot, 6 Red-throated Diver and single Arctic Tern, Pintail, Tufted Duck and Goosander.
Grounded Migrants
A check of less frequently covered areas of the island produced 15 Long-tailed Tit, 6 Siskin, 2 Coal Tit, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Chiffchaff and single Great Spotted Woodpecker, Blackcap, Brambling, Redwing and Tree Sparrow.

A himt of movement saw 16 Skylark, 12 Chaffinch and 5 Whooper Swan logged.

Observations over the sea as the rain cleared (1000-1200) were highlighted by 3 Little Gull (adult + 2 first-winter) and single Long-tailed Duck (first-winter) and Great Northern Diver (adult). Also seen were 81 Common Scoter, 36 Kittiwake, 12 Gannet, 9 Razorbill, 5 Red-breasted Merganser and a Red-throated Diver.

Only 14 Goldcrest, 4 Coal Tit, 2 Chiffchaff and a Redwing were logged.
Diurnal Migration
A wide variety of birds were on the move and totals through the morning included 770 Jackdaw, 385 Pink-footed Goose, 100 Skylark, 90 Meadow Pipit, 80 Swallow, 56 Carrion Crow, 47 Pied Wagtail, 35 Whooper Swan, 26 Linnet, 21 Tree Sparrow, 16 Redwing, 16 Magpie, 10 Siskin, 9 Lesser Redpoll, 5 Reed Bunting, 5 Raven, 4 Jay, 4 Greenfinch, 2 Rook and 2 Collared Dove.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first Goldeneye have returned and waders included 2500 Knot.
Miscellaneous
Different ringtail Hen Harriers hunted the island at 1015hrs and 1400hrs – the latter bird was seen to be a satellite tracked individual.
Butterflies and Moths
A total of 11 moths of 9 species were attracted overnight with Yellow-line Quaker and Green-brindled Crescent new for the year.

Observations over the sea (0830-1030) produced more variety than of late with 430 Common Scoter, 350 Razorbill, 38 Kittiwake, 27 Guillemot, 10 Gannet, 9 Red-throated Diver, 3 Puffin, 2 Arctic Skua and 2 Tufted Duck and single Shag and Pintail.
Grounded Migrants
Just 6 Redwing, 6 Goldcrest and a Chiffchaff were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Little evidence of movement in the conditions with just 3 Skylark logged.

Long-eared Owl and Yellow-browed Warbler

13th October 2021 – overcast/drizzle clearing WNW3
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea revealed a post-roost gathering of 12 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
A single Long-eared Owl and Yellow-browed Warbler were amongst 28 Redwing – the first of the autumn. Also seen were 4 Coal Tit, 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Goldcrest and a Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Totals included 40 Pied Wagtail, 28 Meadow Pipit, 25 Chaffinch, 3 Siskin and single Grey Wagtail, Rock Pipit and Brambling.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 6 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and a Ruff.
Miscellaneous
Single Water Rail and Merlin were the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
Several Red Admiral remain on the wing.

The Brent Goose flock held 187 pale-bellied birds.

Activity was no more than a steady trickle which provided totals of 155 Pink-footed Geese, 120 Starling, 100 Skylark, 90 Chaffinch, 85 Greenfinch, 80 Meadow Pipit, 67 Jackdaw, 30 Reed Bunting, 27 Tree Sparrow, 23 Pied Wagtail, 8 Siskin, 3 Swallow, 2 Lesser Redpoll and a Grey Wagtail.

A Merlin and Barn Owl were the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
A few Red Admiral and a Comma are still on the wing and the moth trap provided 26 moths of 13 species with Feathered Rannuculus new for the year.

A scan of the sea revealed 23 Common Scoter and 2 Shag.

Limited to 4 Wheatear, 3 Goldcrest and a Chiffchaff – it has been a very poor autumn so far for Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Numerous skeins of Pink-footed Geese totalling 3300 birds flew into Morecambe Bay at dawn.

Buzzard and Mediterranean Gull

A scan of the sea revealed 3 Shag.

Limited to 2 Chiffchaff and a Goldcrest.

After the inclement conditions of the last week the day dawned bright and calm, however, the anticipated flood of migrants moving through failed to materialise with only 560 Starling, 320 Skylark, 110 Meadow Pipit, 80 Jackdaw, 70 Chaffinch, 34 Tree Sparrow, 24 Swallow, 24 Pied Wagtail, 15 Pink-footed Geese, 7 Reed Bunting, 6 Greenfinch, 5 Grey Wagtail and a Lesser Redpoll logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock continues to increase with 245 pale-bellied birds seen along with 1410 Wigeon, 403 Teal, 56 Pintail and 3 Shoveler. Waders included 5990 Oystercatcher, 1484 Redshank, 1000 Knot, 10 Greenshank and 2 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A total of 77 Little Egret frequented the saltmarshes along the eastern shore while 2 Merlin and single Buzzard, Peregrine and Mediterranean Gull were the best of the rest.

Another excruciating morning spent looking over the sea. Morning observations as the rain cleared to showers (1030-1230) produced just 23 Common Scoter, 14 Pintail, 5 Red-throated Diver and 4 Gannet.

It can be a frustrating time looking over the sea in the windy conditions that often dominate at this time of the year, and so it proved today. Early morning observations (0730-1030) produced just 500 Common Scoter, 23 Red-throated Diver, 10 Razorbill, 10 Gannet, 3 Brent Goose and single Great Skua and Mediterranean Gull.

New Ringing Cabin

After the welcome news earlier in the year of a successful grant application from the British Birds Charitable Trust. The first phase of the replacement of the observarory ringing cabin has now been completed. After c200 manhours the cabin has now been erected and weatherproofed. Phase 2 which will involve the installation of services and the internal fitting out will begin later in the year once autumn migration is completed. Thanks to all who helped in the first Phase.

A flurry of activity which produced 410 Meadow Pipit, 73 Pied Wagtail, 11 Grey Wagtail, 11 Chaffinch, 7 Reed Bunting and 5 Pink-footed Geese was quickly subdued by the rain moving in.

The first 2 Whooper Swan of the autumn were recorded.

The early morning checks over the sea (0700-0800) produced just 19 Common Scoter, 8 Shag, 5 Gannet and a Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A few birds on offer with 4 Chiffchaff, 2 Whitethroat and single Goldcrest, Blackcap and Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Passage continues to stall with only 270 Meadow Pipit, 60 Skylark, 45 Pink-footed Goose, 40 Swallow, 23 Grey Wagtail, 21 Pied Wagtail, 8 Reed Bunting, 8 Chaffinch, 6 Greenfinch, 2 Siskin and a Sand Martin moving in the calm conditions.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock continues to build with 142 pale-bellied birds recorded.

The Hooded Crow is still in residence.

The early morning checks over the sea (0730-0930) produced 770 Common Scoter, 54 Gannet, 42 Red-throated Diver, 15 Razorbill, 6 Shag, 5 Guillemot, 3 Kittiwake and an Arctic Skua.

Again very little on offer in the conditions with just 2 Chiffchaff logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock continues to build with 111 pale-bellied birds recorded. Additional sightings included 500 Sanderling and 34 Pintail.

The Kingfisher is still in residence along with the adult Mediterranean Gull.
Ringing
A colour-ringed Great Black-backed Gull marked as a pullus at South Walney earlier in the year was seen at Sandside on the Kent Estuary on 22nd September 2021.

An early morning check over the sea (0715-0815) produced 340 Common Scoter, 10 Red-throated Diver, 9 Gannet, 5 Shag and a Razorbill.

Again very little on offer with just 3 Chiffchaff and 2 Wheatear logged.
Diurnal Migration
Generally quiet with just 550 Meadow Pipit, 37 Pied Wagtail, 12 Skylark, 11 Grey Wagtail, 6 Swallow and 3 Reed Bunting recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
Brent Geese continue to arrive with 68 pale-bellied birds seen. Additional wildfowl included 1160 Wigeon, 25 Pintail and 5 Shoveler while 5 Black-tailed Godwit were the best of the waders

An Osprey flew southwest at 1730hrs.

The first 18 pale-bellied Brent Geese have returned and 12 Pintail were amongst a Wigeon influx which saw 1050 birds logged.

Slightly better with 12 Wheatear, 5 White Wagtail, 3 Chiffchaff and single Whinchat, Spotted Flycatcher, Whitethroat and Goldcrest logged.

Remaining slow with just 160 Meadow Pipit, 110 Swallow, 16 Grey Wagtail, 9 House Martin, 2 Siskin and a Sand Martin recorded.

More mundane passage with just 80 Meadow Pipit, 12 Swallow, 10 Grey Wagtail, 8 Skylark and a Siskin.

A total of 30 Greenshank and 3 Black-tailed Godwit were amongst good numbers of Redshank.

16th September 2021 – sunny spells NW1

Early morning observations over the sea (0715-0815) revealed 1115 Common Scoter, 6 Gannet, 4 Red-throated Diver and a Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Wheatear were dominant with 24 birds logged, also seen were 6 White Wagtail and single Chiffchaff and Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
After the excesses of yesterday back to the routine with 100 Meadow Pipit, 29 Swallow, 12 Skylark, 11 Grey Wagtail, 8 Rook and 3 Jackdaw logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 10 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit were amongst 1200 Redshank.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains and a Kingfisher was a less than annual visitant.
