Winter birding

29th November 2023 – bright and frosty/calm
Offshore
A check of the calm sea revealed 120 Common Scoter, 41 Red-throated Diver, 18 Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Great Crested Grebe and a Shag.
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 60 Pink-footed Geese flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 460 Dunlin, 300 Lapwing and 100 Knot.
Miscellaneous
Three Sparrowhawk were seen and 5 Bullfinch and 2 Jay were the best of the rest.

Hooded Crow brace

28th November 2023 – bright and frosty/calm
Offshore
The eastern shore provided 10 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Guillemot and single Common Scoter and Red-throated Diver at high tide.
Grounded Migrants
The 2 Cetti’s Warbler remain and single Chiffchaff and Goldcrest were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 42 Pink-footed Geese and 4 Siskin flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 500 Knot, 42 Grey Plover, 11 Greenshank and 3 Woodcock.
Miscellaneous
Two Hooded Crow were recorded along with two hybrids. A small flock of 12 Twite and single Merlin, Peregrine and Water Rail were the best of the rest.

Great Northern Diver and Scaup

26th November 2023 – overcast E2/3
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea (0815-0915) produced 276 Common Scoter, 15 Red-breasted Merganser, 12 Shag, 6 Red-throated Diver, 6 Razorbill, 4 Guillemot and single Great Northern Diver and Scaup.
Grounded Migrants
Single Fieldfare and Goldcrest were newly arrived.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 335 light-bellied Brent Geese and 160 Pintail.
Miscellaneous
Just 2 Twite were amongst 30 Linnet and the Hooded Crow remains.

Cetti’s remain

25th November 2023 – bright and frosty/calm
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 5 Song Thrush, 2 Fieldfare and 2 Redwing. The 2 Cetti’s Warbler remain and 2 Goldcrest were logged.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 223 Pink-footed Geese, 4 Whooper Swan, 4 Brambling, 4 Siskin, 2 Lesser Redpoll and a Stock Dove flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Four Woodcock were logged.
Miscellaneous
Two Merlin and 2 Peregrine were the best of the rest.

Waxwings arrive

24th November 2023 – bright and sunny N4/3
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea produced 46 Razorbill, 25 Guillemot, 18 Common Scoter, 14 Red-throated Diver, 8 Red-breasted Merganser and 4 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
A group of five Waxwing put in an appearance and additional sightings included 30 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Redwing, 2 Goldcrest and single Treecreeper and Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 660 Woodpigeon, 9 Whooper Swan and 9 Siskin flew through.
Miscellaneous
The Marsh Harrier remains.

Reasonable seawatch

22nd November 2023 – overcast/showers WSW3/4
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea (0830-1030) revealed 52 Common Scoter, 52 Razorbill, 16 Guillemot, 12 Red-throated Diver, 8 Scaup, 5 Kittiwake, 5 Red-breasted Merganser, 4 Gannet and a Little Gull.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains.

Cetti’s remains and Woodcock arrive

21st November 2023 – bright and sunny N1/2
Offshore
A check of the sea revealed 2000 Eider, 13 Great Crested Grebe, 9 Shag, 8 Common Scoter, 5 Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Red-throated Diver and a Great Northern Diver.
Grounded Migrants
At least one Cetti’s Warbler remains and a single Chiffchaff and 3 Goldcrest were seen amongst 43 Long-tailed Tit.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 190 Pink-footed Goose, 185 Woodpigeon, 10 Whooper Swan, 3 Siskin and a Lesser Redpoll flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Four Woodcock were logged and 8 Greenshank were seen.
Miscellaneous
Four Raven were seen and a Water Rail was squealed. Raptors involved 3 Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel and single Merlin and Peregrine.

Another Little Gull

17th November 2023 – early rain E2
Offshore
Although a Little Gull was logged the sea was generally quiet.
Grounded Migrants
Single Chiffchaff and Goldcrest were seen.
Diurnal Migration
A Siskin flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Long-tailed Duck remains.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow continues in residence.

Marsh Harrier reappears

16th November 2023 – overcast/calm
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0800-0900) produced 240 Common Scoter, 27 Shag, 3 Red-throated Diver, 3 Razorbill, 2 Gannet and a Great Northern Diver. The Slavonian Grebe was again off the eastern shore.
Grounded Migrants
A Chiffchaff was seen.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 210 Pink-footed Geese flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Long-tailed Duck remains and the Brent Goose flock held a record 548 light-bellied birds and 14 dark-bellied birds. Waders included 15 Greenshank and a Jack Snipe amongst 95 Snipe.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains and the female Marsh Harrier put in another appearance. However, only 4 Twite were seen.

Slavonian Grebe and Great Northern Diver

14th November 2023 – rain then sun and showers W2/3
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0800-0900) produced 31 Common Scoter, 15 Shag, 9 Kittiwake and single Great Northern Diver, Little Gull and Red-throated Diver. Later a Slavonian Grebe was on the sheltered eastern shore.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Long-tailed Duck remains amongst 18 Red-breasted Merganser and 7 Goldeneye and at least 7 Greenshank were seen.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains, 2 Raven were logged and raptors included 2 Peregrine and a Merlin.

A check of the sea produced 33 Common Soter, 10 Razorbill and 3 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Three Goldcrest and a Chiffchaff were amongst 9 Long-tailed Tit and a Coal Tit.
Diurnal Migration
Only a solitary Siskin was logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Long-tailed Duck remains and at least 10 Greenshank were seen.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains and 2 Raven were logged.

Cetti’s Warbler double

11th November 2023 – bright and sunny N1
Grounded Migrants
Two Cetti’s Warbler are the first multiple record for the island. Early morning thrushes involved 41 Fieldfare, 10 Redwing and 3 Mistle Thrush while 3 Chiffchaff and 3 Goldcrest were amongst 17 Long-tailed Tit.
Diurnal Migration
A few species remain on the move with 220 Pink-footed Goose, 30 Woodpigeon, 4 Whooper Swan and 2 Lesser Redpoll logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Long-tailed Duck remains and a Purple Sandpiper was logged.
Miscellaneous
At least 5 Water Rail were logged.

First Twite finally appear

10th November 2023 – bright and sunny N1
Offshore
A check of the sea revealed 10 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 9 Fieldfare while a Chiffchaff was amongst 5 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
A few species remain on the move with 185 Woodpigeon, 90 Pink-footed Goose and single Lesser Redpoll and Siskin logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Long-tailed Duck remains amongst 9 Goldeneye and 17 Greenshank were logged.
Miscellaneous
The first 11 Twite have finally appeared and the Hooded Crow remains.

Great Skua

7th November 2023 – showers W3/5
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0800-0900) revealed 145 Common Scoter, 15 Razorbill, 12 Kittiwake, 7 Red-throated Diver, 6 Shag, 4 Gannet, 2 Guillemot and a Great Skua.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Long-tailed Duck remains and a Purple Sandpiper was logged.
Miscellaneous
While there are several flocks of Linnet roaming the island the usual Twite flock has yet to appear.

Late Sandwich Tern

A late Sandwich Tern was off the eastern shore.

A further 8 Whooper Swan flew through.

A Whooper Swan was grounded and the Long-tailed Duck remains.

The Hooded Crow remains and a Peregrine and 2 Raven were the best of the rest.

Long-tailed Duck and Woodcock

5th November 2023 – bright and sunny NNW1/2
Offshore
A few Gannet are still offshore.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 3 Redwing, 3 Fieldfare and 2 Redwing. Additional sightings were limited to 30 Dunnock and a Goldcrest amongst 12 Long-tailed Tit
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 55 Whooper Swan, 10 Chaffinch, 5 Siskin, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 4 Tree Sparrow, 2 Grey Wagtail and single Brambling and Stock Dove were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Single Long-tailed Duck and Woodcock were newly arrived.
Miscellaneous
Two Merlin and a Peregrine were the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
A Red Admiral remained on the wing and immigrants in the moth trap involved a Silver Y.

A Shag was off the eastern shore.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 2 Redwing and single Fieldfare and Mistle Thrush.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 720 Pink-footed Goose, 51 Whooper Swan, 40 Chaffinch. 25 Jackdaw, 20 Carrion Crow, 3 Siskin and 2 Brambling were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 50 Sanderling.
Miscellaneous
Two Peregrine and a Merlin were the best of the rest.

Late Common Tern

3rd November 2023 – sunny spells WNW3/4
Offshore
A late Common Tern was off the eastern shore.
Grounded Migrants
Two Chiffchaff were amongst 39 Long-tailed Tit and 3 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 85 Pink-footed Goose, 22 Siskin, 3 Fieldfare and 2 Lesser Redpoll were logged.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains.

Great White Egret

2nd November 2023 – overcast/rain at times NNE3/5
Offshore
Early morning observations over the sea (0800-0900) produced 52 Common Scoter, 20 Gannet, 7 Shag, 6 Razorbill, 5 Kittiwake, 3 Red-throated Diver and 3 Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 20 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush and a Redwing. Also seen were 10 Long-tailed Tit and 3 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Flocks of 70 Pink-footed Geese and 27 Whooper Swan were logged.
Miscellaneous
A Great White Egret was seen; the Hooded Crow remains and a Short-eared Owl was logged.

Little Gulls and Ring Ouzel

1st November 2023 – overcast/rain clearing to showers SSE3/5
Offshore
Early morning observations over the sea (0800-0900) were led by 5 Little Gulls amongst totals of 41 Common Scoter, 21 Razorbill, 14 Kittiwake and 10 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
A Ring Ouzel was amongst 10 Blackbird, 5 Goldcrest and a late Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Four Swallow were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 18 Greenshank amongst 500 Dunlin, 500 Redshank, 80 Grey Plover and 70 Lapwing.

The Hooded Crow remains.
