Pied Flycatcher headlines new arrivals

30th April 2007 - bright and sunny E 4/5
Offshore
Early morning (0720-0820) produced more activity than of late. Sightings included 7 Red-throated Diver, 20 Gannet, 2 Barnacle Geese, 15 Common Scoter, 205 Arctic Tern and 100 Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Although highlighted by a Pied Flycatcher, other birds logged included 53 Wheatear - with ringing suggesting that the majority are now Greenland birds, 12 Willow Warbler and single White Wagtail, Whinchat and Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
A Merlin was perhaps a late overwintering bird but a light passage of Swallow, Sand Martin and House Martin was noted.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Ruff continues to linger and a total of 32 Whimbrel were logged.
Moths
Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet, Silver-ground Carpet and Herald attracted to the MV light overnight were new additions for 2007.

Another Marsh Harrier flies through

29th April 2007-bright and sunny E 4/5
Offshore
Another quiet day, early morning sightings were limited to 60 Sandwich Tern, 4 Gannet, 2 Red-throated Diver and 2 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
An increase to 70 Wheatear, along with 10 Willow Warbler, 2 White Wagtail and single Grasshopper Warbler and Whinchat indicated further new arrivals. The number of territorial Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler present on the island continues to rise and a minimum 14 Lesser Whitethroat are also present - record numbers. The Hooded Crow remains, albeit elusively.
Diurnal Migration
The second Marsh Harrier of the year flew through mid-afternoon and just a light Swallow passage was noted.
Wildfowl and Waders
Single drake Pintail and Shoveler remain, a total of 34 Whimbrel were seen, at least five Purple Sandpiper and the single Ruff remain while 2 Black-tailed Godwit and a Common Sandpiper were new in.
Moths
A Streamer becomes just the second island record following a singleton in 1991.

Wood Warbler heads new arrivals

28th April 2007 - bright and sunny, some cloud later NE 4/5
Offshore
Highlights of a seawatch on the rising tide (0815-0915) were few with just 20 Common Scoter, 3 Arctic Tern and 2 Red-throated Diver amongst small numbers of Gannet, Guillemot, Razorbill and Sandwich Tern. Low tide provided 100 Sandwich Tern, 35 Common Scoter, 3 Shag and a single Arctic Tern, all feeding close inshore.
Grounded Migrants
A Wood Warbler singing from the tallest trees on the island was the highlight of today's new arrivals which also included 48 Wheatear, 7 Willow Warbler and a solitary Blackcap. The Hooded Crow put in another appearance.
Diurnal Migration
A Kestrel flew in off the Irish Sea and a small passage of Swallow and Sand Martin was noted, along with a single Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
Two drake Shoveler and the drake Pintail remain. Waders included 33 Bar-tailed Godwit, many in summer plumage, 2 Whimbrel and single Spotted Redshank, Greenshank and Ruff - the latter new in.

Common Tern and Reed Warbler are the latest arrivals

27th April 2007 - bright and sunny/thunder pm NE3/4
Offshore
Early morning passage was quieter than of late with just 45 Common Scoter and small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Manx Shearwater, Kittiwake, Sandwich Tern and Razorbill. However, birds feeding offshore at low tide included 5 Shag, 420 Common Scoter (flocks of 350 and 70), 80 Sandwich Tern, 4 Little Tern and a single Common Tern. A dark phase Arctic Skua harried the terns.
Grounded Migrants
Obvious grounded migrants were few but included 17 Wheatear and single Willow Warbler and Blackcap. Good numbers of Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler are now established at breeding sites across the island and at least 6 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Grasshopper Warbler and 2 Reed Warbler - the latter newly arrived - all hold territory. The itinerant Hooded Crow continues to roam the island.
Wildfowl and Waders
Little of note, the drake Pintail remains, a Common Sandpiper was new in and 2 Whimbrel were logged.
Butterflies
A total of 8 Orange Tip is exceptional for the island and Speckled Wood are now on the wing.

Wheatears and Willow Warblers

26th April 2007 - bright and sunny N1/2/3/4
Offshore
An early morning watch (0615-0715) was highlighted by a single Great Skua heading into Morecambe Bay. Also logged were 215 Common Scoter, 42 Gannet, 11 Manx Shearwater, 8 Red-throated Diver and lesser numbers of Sandwich Tern, Kittiwake and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Although conditions were clear a steadily increasing north wind from dawn produced another fall on the island. The main species were 100 Willow Warbler and 65 Wheatear although 16 Whitethroat, 8 Sedge Warbler, 5 Blackcap, 4 Whinchat, 2 Redstart, 2 Lesser Whitethroat and single White Wagtail and Garden Warbler were also recorded.
Diurnal Migration
A Merlin flew in off the Irish Sea and a light Swallow passage was noted.
Wildfowl and Waders
A single drake Pintail remains and 7 Whimbrel were seen along with the now seemingly obligatory Greenshank and Spotted Redshank.

Wheatears continue to pour through

25th April 2007 - murky start then sunny spells S4 then SW5
Offshore
Early morning observations (0625-0725) provided variety if not quantity. Highlights were a a dark phase Arctic Skua and, unusually, a pair of Gadwall while other sightings involved 60 Sandwich Tern, 48 Manx Shearwater, 39 Razorbill, 30 Arctic Tern, 25 Guillemot, 15 Gannet and lesser numbers of Red-throated Diver, Common Scoter and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Although 65 Wheatear were logged passerine migration in general slowed with just 8 Willow Warbler, 4 Blackcap and 2 Whinchat.
Diurnal Migration
No systematic count was undertaken, however at least 22 Swallow and 5 Sand Martin moved through.
Wildfowl and Waders
A flock of 28 Black-tailed Godwit roosted over the evening tide, also logged were 25 Whimbrel and the long-staying Greenshank and Spotted Redshank - the latter finally starting to attain breeding plumage.
Miscellaneous
At least 2 Little Egrets continue to stalk the island.

An early Swift flies through and Whitethroats arrive

24th April 2007 - overcast/early mist then showers SW4/3/2/1
Offshore
A pale phase Arctic Skua flew into Morecambe Bay on the evening tide. Also logged were 3 Red-throated Diver, 110 Sandwich Tern, 11 Guillemot and lesser numbers of Gannet, Kittiwake and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
A total of 4 Whitethroat were the first of the year and other new arrivals included 40 Wheatear, 20 Willow Warbler, 5 Blackcap. 3 Grasshopper Warbler, 3 Sedge Warbler and a single Whinchat. At least 1 Lesser Whitethroat remains on territory and the Hooded Crow continues to linger.
Diurnal Migration
The first Swift of the year - one of the earliest ever recorded - flew through while 30 Swallow and 6 Sand Martin were also seen.
Wildfowl and Waders
The presence of 4 Greenshank suggested an influx of passage birds, also logged were 10 Whimbrel and the long-staying Spotted Redshank.

Rain stops play

23rd April 2007 - rain S4/5
Offshore
A single Shag and 25 Sandwich Tern fed over the evening tide.
Grounded Migrants
Persistent rain severely limited observations but new arrivals included 8 Willow Warbler, 3 Blackcap - continuing the best spring passage on record for this species - and 3 Wheatear.
Wildfowl and Waders
A drake Pintail and 2 Shoveler continue to linger and waders included 3000 Knot, 300 Golden Plover, 3 Whimbrel and single Spotted Redshank and Greenshank.
Mammals
A group of 11 Grey Seals were offshore.

Tree Pipit heads new arrivals

22nd April 2007 - overcast/misty with drizzle at times S3
Offshore
At least 1 Shag remains and just small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Sandwich Tern and Guillemot are logged in poor visibility
Grounded Migrants
Passerines continue to move through and new arrivals included 30 Willow Warbler, 11 Blackcap, 4 Wheatear, 2 Chiffchaff and the first Tree Pipit of the year. A Hooded Crow continues to linger.
Diurnal Migration
No coordinated count was undertaken, however, 10 Swallow, 2 House Martin and 3 Collared Dove were recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 1275 Eider were present and high tide provided 3500 Knot, 2230 Oystercatcher, 550 Redshank, 430 Turnstone, 130 Sanderling and single Spotted Redshank and Greenshank.
Moths
The MV trap produced an early Nutmeg - a new addition for the year.

The calm after the storm

21st April 2007 - overcast/misty then hazy sunshine S4/3
Offshore
Early morning observations (0715-0815) were highlighted by an Arctic Skua heading into Morecambe Bay along with 60 Sandwich Tern and 40 Common Scoter. Also seen were small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Manx Shearwater, Kittiwake and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Although a quieter day 7 Lesser Whitethroat were logged and totals of 25 Wheatear, 8 Blackcap, 3 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff and single Redstart and Sedge Warbler included some new arrivals.
Diurnal Migration
Although no coordinated count was undertaken there was a noticeable Swallow influx with around 60 birds logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A single dark-bellied Brent Goose was logged and a flock of 78 Black-tailed Godwit roosted over the tide along with 335 Golden Plover, 18 Whimbrel, 20 Purple Sandpiper, 250 Turnstone and a single Spotted Redshank.
Butterflies and Moths
An Orange Tip was on the wing and the moth trap produced Chamomile Shark and Hebrew Character.

A Marsh Harrier flies through and another fall of migrants

20th April 2007 - overcast and misty, hazy sun later SE 3/2/1
Offshore
A flock of 35 Sandwich Tern fed offshore.
Grounded Migrants
Another overcast and misty start produced a significant fall with Redstart, Whinchat and Sedge Warbler all new for the year. Totals included 100 Willow Warbler, 100 Wheatear, 31 Blackcap, 6 Redstart, 6 Lesser Whitethroat, 4 Chiffchaff and single Whinchat and Sedge Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
A Marsh Harrier was quickly encouraged to move on by the gull colony and a skein of 60 Pink-footed Geese headed north. Also logged were 85 Swallow, 35 Meadow Pipit and single Sparrowhawk, Peregrine and alba Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
A flock of 35 Black-tailed Godwit roosted over the tide before heading high north as dusk approached. At least 6 Whimbrel were logged along with the lingering Greenshank and Spotted Redshank.

The first Arctic Tern moves through

19th April 2007 - bright and sunny, cloudier later WSW 4/5
Offshore
The first Arctic Tern of the spring moved through early morning (0740-0840) along with 22 Red-throated Diver, 43 Manx Shearwater, 8 Gannet, 10 Kittiwake, 55 Sandwich Tern, 125 Razorbill and 15 Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
A Hooded Crow was perhaps the bird seen a few days earlier, thereafter sightings were limited to 10 Wheatear, 7 Willow Warbler and single Blackcap and Chiffchaff. The Lesser Whitethroat continues to sing along the hedgerows at Biggar.
Diurnal Migration
Another small hirundine movement was evident with 11 Sand Martin and 8 Swallow logged along with 3 alba Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
At least 3 Whimbrel remain along with a flock of 330 Golden Plover - many in full summer plumage.
Butterflies
An early Large White was on the wing.

Whimbrel passage begins

18th April 2007 - bright and sunny N 1/2 then W 3/4
Offshore
Calm seas produced just a light northerly early morning (0715-0815) movement highlighted by 12 Manx Shearwater. Other totals included 8 Red-throated Diver, 65 Common Scoter, 32 Sandwich Tern and 40 Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Clear skies again produced few birds, sightings were limited to 12 Wheatear, 3 Willow Warbler and a Chiffchaff. The Lesser Whitethroat was again singing from hedgerows at Biggar.
Diurnal Migration
A Merlin flew in off the sea and a small hirundine movement comprised 22 Swallow and 10 Sand Martin.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first 4 Whimbrel of the year appeared and a single Greenshank still lingered along with 2 Wigeon and a drake Pintail.
Moths
Another Small Quaker appeared in the light trap and other records included Common Quaker, Red Chestnut, Hebrew Character and Chamomile Shark.

An early Lesser Whitethroat

17th April 2007 - bright and sunny, NNW 2/3/4
Offshore
A light northerly passage was noted in an early morning watch (0700-0800), sightings included: 130 Common Scoter, 100 Sandwich Tern, 40 Razorbill, 10 Guillemot, 8 Red-throated Diver and a single Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
A bright and clear morning yielded few grounded migrants, sightings were limited to 16 Wheatear, 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Blackcap and 2 Chiffchaff. Highlight was the early return of a Lesser Whitethroat to the hedgerows around Biggar.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Spotted Redshank continues to linger, albeit elusively.
Moths
A Small Quaker attracted to the MV trap becomes just the second island record.

Offshore passage provides variety and Willow Warblers flood in

16th April 2007 - overcast then bright and sunny N2/3/4
Offshore
An early morning watch (0745-0845) produced the first Manx Shearwater, Little Tern and Puffin of the year. Other sightings included: 240 Common Scoter, 120 Sandwich Tern, 32 Gannet, 24 Razorbill, 12 Guillemot, 11 Red-throated Diver, 14 Red-breasted Merganser and 4 Arctic Skua. A second less eventful watch (1015-1115) provided an additional 50 Common Scoter, 30 Sandwich Tern, 12 Gannet and 5 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Fall conditions saw good numbers of Willow Warbler present with 75 birds logged, however, other migrants were sparse with just 6 Wheatear and single Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Redwing and Robin.
Diurnal Migration
No coordinated count was undertaken and just 10 Meadow Pipit, 5 alba Wagtail and a Sand Martin were noted.

A quieter day........

15th April 2007 - misty/hazy sunshine, variable 1/2
Offshore
A single Shag and 12 Sandwich Tern were logged in low visibility.
Grounded Migrants
Although weather conditions were similar to the last few days, birds were less plentiful with just 11 Willow Warbler, 4 Wheatear, 2 Blackcap and single Chiffchaff and Robin.
Diurnal Migration
At least one Merlin continues to hunt the island and the first local Swallows returned to traditional breeding haunts. Passage included 25 Meadow Pipit, 10 alba Wagtail, 5 Collared Dove and single Redpoll, Siskin and Sand Martin.
Wildfowl and Waders
A handful of Pintail, Wigeon and Shoveler remain. A census of the Eiders roosting over the high tide produced 1380 individuals, drakes were predominant at a ratio of around 4:1. Single Greenshank and Spotted Redshank remain.
Mammals
At least 10 Grey Seals were offshore.

14th April 2007 - misty start then hazy sunshine E2/1

Around 80 Sandwich Tern fed offshore.
Grounded Migrants
Another misty start induced a small fall, Willow Warblers again led the way with 40 birds logged. Also seen were 10 Wheatear, 4 Blackcap and single White Wagtail, Redwing, Chiffchaff and Goldcrest along with an early Grasshopper Warbler.

Willow Warbler influx

13th April 2007 - misty start then hazy sunshine E2
Offshore
Totals of 11 Red-throated Diver and 20 Sandwich Tern were logged along with small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet and Common Scoter.
Grounded Migrants
The misty start produced a small fall involving: 35 Willow Warbler, 17 Wheatear, 3 Blackcap and single Redwing, Fieldfare and Great Tit.
Diurnal Migration
A Merlin chasing Starlings was perhaps a lingering winter bird but 10 Swallow and the first House Martin of the year flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Spotted Redshank remained and a Common Sandpiper was new in.
Moths
A Red Line Quaker was new for the year.
Butterflies
A total of 25 Peacock were on the wing along with Small Tortoiseshell, Green-veined White and Small White.

Migrants continue to trickle through......

12th April 2007 - Hazy sunshine Variable1/2
Offshore
A total of 6 Red-throated Diver and 23 Sandwich Tern along with small numbers of Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Just small numbers again including 10 Pied Wagtail, 7 Willow Warbler, 6 Wheatear, 3 Goldcrest and single White Wagtail, Blackcap and Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 10 Rook moving east and Swallows trickle through.
Wildfowl and Waders
At least 2 Gadwall continue to linger. The lagoons held 600 Redshank over the evening tide and amongst these were 2 Black-tailed Godwit, single Greenshank, Spotted Redshank and most unusually a Purple Sandpiper. In addition, Biggar Bank produced a varied selection of waders including 300 Golden Plover, 150 Turnstone and 24 Purple Sandpiper.

Heavy Common Scoter passage and a scattering of migrants

11th April 2007 - overcast/sunny later W2/1
Offshore
The first hour after dawn (0630-0730) revealed a heavy northbound passage of Common Scoter with 1720 birds noted. Other sightings included day totals of 38 Red-throated Diver, 37 Gannet, 20 Razorbill and 230 Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Overcast conditions early morning produced the first 2 Blackcap of the year along with 12Willow Warbler, 8 Wheatear, 7 White Wagtail, 5 Pied Wagtail and 5 Goldcrest and a Fieldfare, before birds dispersed as the weather cleared.
Diurnal Migration
No coordinated count, however, 2 Merlin were logged and the first few Swallows of the year and 2 Sand Martin flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The highlights were 3 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and 3 Gadwall.

Great Northern Diver.............

10th April 2007 - overcast WSW4
Offshore
At least 4 Shag still remain, an early morning northerly passage (0630-0730) was highlighted by a summer plumaged Great Northern Diver along with 63 Gannet, 57 Kittiwake and 140 Common Scoter. In addition, a short evening watch (1715-1745) produced 120 Sandwich Tern and small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Common Scoter, Kittiwake, Gannet and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Totals of 4 Wheatear and 4 Goldcrest were perhaps remnants of previous influxes.
Diurnal Migration
Limited to 3 Sand Martin
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall and 2 Black-tailed Godwit remain.
Miscellaneous
Dusk provided 2 Little Owl and a Barn Owl.

Seabird passage begins to build

An early morning watch (0745-0845) produced 6 Red-throated Diver, 30 Gannet, 120 Common Scoter, 7 Kittiwake, 60 Sandwich Tern, 16 Guillemot and 7 Raxorbill.
Grounded Migrants
A quiet day with just 2 Pied Wagtail, 4 Wheatear and 2 Goldcrest logged.
Diurnal Passage
Again quiet with just 10 Meadow Pipit and an alba Wagtail moving through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall and 2 Black-tailed Godwit remain and 1000 Knot fed on Haws Bed on the rising tide.
Miscellaneous
Single Little Egrets were at Tummerhill Marsh and North Walney.

Ring Ouzel.......

8th April 2007 - early cloud, then sunny WSW3
Offshore
At least 4 Shag are still present, also seen were small numbers of Sandwich Tern, Gannet, Common Scoter and Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Wheatears continue to move through with 18 birds logged, also recorded were 50 Meadow Pipit, 15 Goldcrest, 4 Chiffchaff, 2 White Wagtail and a Willow Warbler but highlight was a female Ring Ouzel amongst 6 Blackbird.
Diurnal Migration
A Merlin was perhaps a wintering bird and visible passage was again light with just 40 Meadow Pipit, 5 alba Wagtail and single Redpoll and Sand Martin.
Wildfowl and Waders
At least one pair of Gadwall remain and 2 Black-tailed Godwit are new in.
Miscellaneous
A Little Egret was again on Tummerhill Marsh.

Wheatears to the fore.....

7th April 2007 - bright and sunny/calm
Offshore
A few Sandwich Tern continue to move through but there was little else of note.
Grounded Migrants
Wheatears were again to the fore with 24 birds logged, also recorded were 10 Goldcrest and single Chiffchaff, Redwing and Fieldfare.
Diurnal Migration
A Merlin flew through and a light passage involved 20 Meadow Pipit, 4 alba Wagtail, 2 Redpoll and a Sand Martin.
Butterflies
Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock and Green-veined White are all on the wing.

A Glaucous Gull roosts over the tide

6th April 2007 - bright and sunny N2/3
Offshore
At least 10 Shag were present, along with 25 Sandwich Tern, 19 Common Scoter, Red-throated Diver and Kittiwake. A total of 1270 Eider were logged as birds began to move inshore as the breeding season beckons.
Grounded Migrants
A total of 19 Wheatear were logged along with 8 Goldcrest and singles of White Wagtail, Fieldfare and Redwing.
Diurnal Migration
Passage continued with a NE movement including 130 Meadow Pipit, 10 Sand Martin, 10 alba Wagtail and a Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
At least 2 Gadwall remain, a total of 4 Greenshank were amongst 500 Redshank and the overwintering first-winter drake Long-tailed Duck consorted amongst the Eiders. However, highlight was a first-winter Glaucous Gull roosting on the periphery of the Great Black-backed Gull colony at high tide.
Miscellaneous
A Little Egret was in flooded fields along Biggar Bank.
Moths
A Dotted Border attracted to an MV Trap becomes only the third island record.

The first "fall" of the spring

5th April 2007 - overcast/calm
Grounded Migrants
At long last a change in weather conditions bring about the first fall of the spring. The first 2 Willow Warblers of the year appear along with, 320 Meadow Pipit, 12 Wheatear, 15 Fieldfare, 100 Redwing, 6 Chiffchaff and 25 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 250 Meadow Pipit, 5 alba Wagtail and a Redpoll are logged through the morning.
Wildfowl and Waders
At least four Greenshank remain and a second pair of Gadwall arrive.
Miscellaneous
A single Little Egret still resides on Tummerhill Marsh.

4th April 2007 - sunny spells NE2/NW2
Offshore
10 Red-throated Diver were the only record of note logged.
Grounded Migrants
Totals of 3 Robin, 2 Wheatear, 2 Goldcrest and a single Redwing and Great Tit were a poor showing.
Diurnal Migration
Only a light NE passage involving 20 Meadow Pipit, 5 alba Wagtail and a Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall remain, along with 2 Shoveler and a Greenshank.

Hooded Crow

3rd April 2007 - sunny spells NE4
Offshore
A small early morning movement involving 9 Sandwich Tern, 6 Red-throated Diver, 5 Kittiwake and 3 Razorbill. However, highlight was a Hooded Crow, presumably of Isle of Man origin, that came "in off" from the Irish Sea.
Grounded Migrants
Totals remained low with 2 Robin, 6 Wheatear, 1 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush, 1 Chiffchaff and 7 Goldcrest.
Overhead
A light NE movement of 20 Meadow Pipit.
Wildfowl and waders
A pair of Gadwall on the pools.
Miscellaneous
The Little Egret remains on Tummerhill Marsh.

Diurnal Migration moves to the fore

2nd April 2007 - bright and sunny NE4
Offshore
A small movement involved 13 Red-throated Diver, 5 Razorbill and 2 Adult Little Gull. At least 5 Shag remain from the winter influx.
Grounded Migrants
At least 100 Meadow Pipit, 4 Wheatear and more unusually a Great Tit.
Diurnal Passage
A total of 1350 Meadow Pipit flew NE in the morning at a passage rate of up to 515 birds/hour, also logged 3 Collared Dove, 5 Greenfinch, 20 Linnet, 5 alba Wagtail and a single Redpoll.

Strong early morning northerly passage produced 75 Red-throated Diver, 45 Razorbill, 50 Sandwich Tern, 12 Kittiwake, 14 Gannet and 8 Common Scoter in a two hour watch.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to a single Redwing.
Diurnal Migration
A light NE passage involving 50 Meadow Pipit.
Miscellaneous
A single Little Egret was on Tummerhill Marsh.
