A total of 21 species were trapped overnight and new additions for the year involved Yellow Shell, Dark Arches and Tawny Marbled Minor

Little Tern influx

30th May 2007 - bright start then drizzle at times S3/4

Early morning sightings (0615-0715) were limited to 44 Guillemot, 18 Sandwich Tern and 3 Kittiwake. Birds feeding at the mouth of the bay on the evening tide included 35 Little Tern and 10 Arctic Tern.
Grounded Migrants
The Hooded Crow remains while two Collared Dove and single Spotted Flycatcher and Wheatear were new in.
Miscellaneous
A Barn Owl hunted the island at dusk.

Gull colony shows continued stabilisation and a Cuckoo finally arrives

29th May 2007 - bright and sunny W1/2/3/4/5
Offshore
Early morning observations (0615-0715) produced 150 Sandwich Tern, 90 Common Scoter, 60 Gannet, 3 Kittiwake and 3 Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
The first Cuckoo of the year finally arrived, otherwise sightings were limited to a single Wheatear and the long-staying Hooded Crow.
Breeding Birds
The results of the annual gull census reveal a stable population after many years of decline with 11,988 pairs of Lesser Black-backed Gull and 3,066 pairs of Herring Gull.
Mammals
Two deer were observed swimming in the channel between the island and the mainland.

Late movement in evidence

28th May 2007 - overcast then sunny spells NNE3

Morning sightings (0800-0900) were limited to 35 Sandwich Tern, 12 Gannet and single Fulmar and Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
There was evidence of a late movement with 2 Whitethroat and single Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher and Chaffinch all noted. The Hooded Crow remains.
Breeding Birds
The first Eider chicks have hatched with 3 broods comprising a total of 9 chicks logged.

Offshore sightings again dominate

27th May 2007 - overcast with showers NE3/4
Offshore
Morning observations (0745-0845) involved 65 Common Scoter, 30 Sandwich Tern, 10 Gannet, 4 Manx Shearwater and a single Guillemot. Later in the day, birds feeding over the mouth of Morecambe Bay on the ebbing tide included 50 Sandwich Tern, 33 Arctic Tern and 8 Little Tern.
Grounded Migrants
The Hooded Crow continues to linger and 3 Wheatear were logged.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow continue to trickle through.

Offshore movement continues to provide variety

At least 2 Shag remain. Early morning observations (0530-0630) produced totals of 100 Common Scoter, 80 Sandwich Tern, 25 Gannet, 10 Manx Shearwater, 5 Kittiwake, 3 Arctic Tern, 2 Fulmar and single Arctic Skua and Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A total of 6 Wheatear was the only record of note.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow and House Martin continue to pass through.
Moths
The MV moth trap produced 94 moths of 21 species - the highest catch so far this year, although the only new addition was Common Swift.

First gull chicks hatch

Morning sightings (0615-0715) were limited to 165 Sandwich Tern, 60 Gannet, 10 Guillemot and 3 Shelduck.
Grounded Migrants
The Hooded Crow remains and 6 Wheatear and a Spotted Flycatcher were evidence of passage.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow continue to trickle through.
Breeding Birds
The first gull chicks are now beginning to hatch.

A flock of 18 Arctic Tern fed close inshore. Early morning observations (0615-0715) included 60 Sandwich Tern, 20 Gannet, 5 Guillemot, 2 Red-throated Diver and a single dark phase Arctic Skua. A second watch in the evening (1900-2000) provided 60 Common Scoter, 40 Gannet, 40 Sandwich Tern, 17 Manx Shearwater and single Fulmar and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
A total of 7 Wheatear were logged and a Hooded Crow remains.
Wildfowl and Waders
Passage waders included 500 Dunlin, 80 Ringed Plover and 3 Bar-tailed Godwit.
Breeding Birds
Post-breeding flocks of Lapwing and Starling are already starting to build.

Migration continues to slow

Early morning sightings (0615-0715) were sparse with just 22 Common Scoter, 12 Sandwich Tern, 11 Kittiwake, 8 Guillemot, 6 Gannet, 2 Red-throated Diver and a single Manx Shearwater noted.

Only 5 Wheatear were logged.
Miscellaneous
At least one Little Egret remains.
Moths
New species for the year attracted to the MV light overnight included Mottled Rustic, Dusky Brocade, Shark, Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Treble Lines and Poplar Hawk-moth.

Little Egrets continue to show as migration slows

Early morning observations (0625-0725) included 41 Common Scoter, 30 Sandwich Tern, 20 Guillemot, 10 Gannet, 3 Arctic Tern, 2 Fulmar and single pale phase Arctic Skua and Red-throated Diver. Sightings from the mouth of Morecambe Bay on the ebbing tide (1830-1900) included 25 Great Crested Grebe, 20 Sandwich Tern, 2 Arctic Tern, 2 Little Tern and a dark phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
Just 14 Wheatear and a single Willow Warbler were logged as passage slows. A single Hooded Crow remains.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow continue to move through.
Miscellaneous
At least 2 Little Egrets remain and a Peregrine was logged.

A group of 20 Grey Seal were offshore.

Common Scoter dominate early morning passage

21st May 2007 - bright and sunny V1/2
Offshore
At least 2 Shag remain. Early morning observations (0515-0715) produced totals of 660 Common Scoter, 160 Sandwich Tern, 60 Kittiwake, 15 Gannet, 4 Guillemot and 2 Great Crested Grebe. A brief watch early evening (1830-1900) provided a feeding flock of 45 Sandwich Tern, 15 Arctic Tern and 2 Little Tern close inshore on the ebbing tide.
Grounded Migrants
A total of 14 Wheatear were logged and at least one Hooded Crow still lingers.
Diurnal Migration
Hirundines continue to move through with 80 Swallow and 10 House Martin logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The only record of note involved 3 Whimbrel.
Breeding Birds
A census revealed a population of 65-70 pairs of Great Black-backed Gull and the first Stonechat broods have fledged.

A Spoonbill flies through

A Spoonbill circled the observatory at 0900hrs before flying off north.
Offshore
At least 3 Shag remain and morning sightings (0750-0850) included 32 Sandwich Tern, 20 Common Scoter, 17 Kittiwake, 12 Guillemot, 4 Arctic Tern, 2 Gannet and a pale phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
Although an influx provided a total of 30 Wheatear there was nothing else of note.
Diurnal Migration
Small numbers of Swallow and House Martin continue to move through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Passage waders included 2000 Oystercatcher, 30 Sanderling, 12 Whimbrel and 5 Bar-tailed Godwit.
Moths
Small Magpie was a new addition for the year.

Observations on the rising tide (0800-0930 & 1130-1300) produced totals of 90 Common Scoter, 65 Gannet, 30 Sandwich Tern, 32 Guillemot, 20 Manx Shearwater, 18 Arctic Tern, 5 Fulmar, 4 Little Tern, 3 Arctic Skua and 2 Kittiwake.

Spotted Flycatchers finally move through

17th May 2007 - overcast/drizzle at times SW2/3

Observations on the falling tide (1200-1300 & 1330-1430) provided totals of 40 Sandwich Tern, 30 Kittiwake, 25 Gannet, 3 Guillemot, 2 Common Scoter and a dark phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
At least one Hooded Crow remains and new arrivals included 15 Wheatear, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Pied Flycatcher, 2 Willow Warbler and single Whinchat and Reed Warbler.
Diurnal Migration
Limited to a few Swallow moving through.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 22 Whimbrel and 2 Bar-tailed Godwit were logged.
Moths
New additions for the year included White Ermine, Marbled Minor, Bright-line Brown-eye, Clouded-bordered Brindle, Flame Shoulder and Lime-speck Pug.

Velvet Scoter heads offshore sightings

16th May 2007 - overcast/showers, rain later SW3
Offshore
Morning observations (0745-0915 & 1050-1150) on the rising tide were highlighted by a female Velvet Scoter, 100 Arctic Tern (including flocks of 45, 20 & 28) and 9 Little Tern moving out of Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 3 Shag, 40 Sandwich Tern, 16 Gannet, 13 Common Scoter, 9 Guillemot, 3 Manx Shearwater, 3 Kittiwake, 3 Razorbill and a single dark phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
A Tree Sparrow was unusual for spring while 10 Wheatear and 2 Willow Warbler were also logged. At least 1 Hooded Crow remains.
Diurnal Migration
A small passage of 10 Swallow and 2 House Martin was noted.
Wildfowl and Waders
Sightings included 16 Whimbrel and 5 Bar-tailed Godwit.
Moths
The largest attraction to the MV trap so far this year provided 19 species including Brown Silver-line, Buff Ermine, Lychnis, Spectacle, Setaceous Hebrew Character and Large Yellow Underwing - all new for the year - and 3 Small Elephant Hawk-moths

Migrants continue to move through

15th May 2007 - overcast then bright and sunny V1/2

A quiet day over the sea (0800-0900) was highlighted by 2 pale-phase Arctic Skua and a single Shag amongst small numbers of Gannet, Common Scoter and Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
The 2 Hooded Crow remain and totals of 20 Wheatear, 6 Willow Warbler and single Redstart, Lesser Whitethroat and Blackcap included at least some new arrivals.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 100 Swallow, 20 House Martin and 4 Swift flew through during the course of the morning.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 12 Whimbrel were logged.
Breeding Birds
A single Reed Warbler was still singing and a further influx of Sedge Warbler and Whitethroat was noted.
Mammals
At least 10 Grey Seal were seen along with single Stoat and Hare.
Moths
Amongst the moths attracted to the MV trap overnight was a Small Square-spot - the first of the year.

Passerines continue to trickle through as passage waders build

14th May 2007 - bright and sunny N2/3/4
Offshore
At least 3 Shag continue to linger and morning observations (0730-0830) provided 2 Arctic Skua (1 dark, 1 pale) and 2 Little Tern amongst small numbers of Gannet, Common Scoter, Sandwich Tern and Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
A total of 15 Wheatear were logged along with 3 Willow Warbler and single Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler and Pied Flycatcher. The long-staying Hooded Crow was joined by a second individual.
Diurnal Migration
Evidence of passage was limited to 3 Swift.
Wildfowl and Waders
Passage waders included 230 Ringed Plover, 310 Knot, 170 Sanderling, 5700 Dunlin, 10 Bar-tailed Godwit, 10 Whimbrel, 275 Turnstone and a single Greenshank.

Two Little Egrets stalked the island.

Skuas lead offshore passage

13th May 2007 - overcast, rain by evening V1/2
Offshore
Morning observations over the tide (0800-0900 & 1050-1150) were highlighted by a single pale phase Pomarine Skua and 8 Arctic Skua (5 dark, 3 pale), all heading into Morecambe Bay. Also seen were 85 Sandwich Tern, 30 Common Scoter, 8 Gannet, 6 Guillemot, 4 Arctic Tern, 4 Shag, 2 Kittiwake, 2 Red-throated Diver, 2 Scaup and a single Razorbill. Further observations at low tide (1600-1630) revealed a feeding flock of 50 Sandwich Tern, 5 Arctic Tern and a Kittiwake in the mouth of the bay, which was attended by 10 Arctic Skua (6 dark, 4 pale).
Grounded Migrants
A total of 12 Wheatear were logged along with 3 Garden Warbler, 2 Willow Warbler and single Chaffinch and Blue Tit!
Diurnal Migration
A late Merlin flew through and a steady light passage through the morning provided totals of 120 Swallow and 11 House Martin.

Passage waders included 4600 Dunlin, 20 Sanderling, 8 Bar-tailed Godwit and 4 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
At least one Little Egret continues to roam the island.

Manx Shearwater numbers begin to build

Morning observations (0820-0920 & 1010-1110) continue to provide variety if not quantity, totals included 100 Common Scoter, 100 Sandwich Tern, 65 Manx Shearwater, 25 Kittiwake, 22 Gannet, 10 Guillemot, 3 Shag, 3 Little Tern, 2 Arctic Tern, 2 Fulmar and single Red-throated Diver and Arctic Skua.

The Hooded Crow put in another appearance and a total of 6 Wheatear and single Whitethroat and Willow Warbler were logged.

A light hirundine passage was noted with totals of 12 Swallow and 7 House Martin.

A pair of Teal continue to linger and 5 Whimbrel were seen.

Little Gulls headline offshore sightings

11th May 2007 - overcast/heavy showers V1/2

Morning observations on the falling tide and in between the heavy showers (0800-0900 & 0930-1030) were highlighted by 3 adult Little Gull moving out of Morecambe Bay and 5 dark phase Arctic Skua. Also logged were 148 Common Scoter, 72 Gannet, 68 Sandwich Tern, 20 Arctic Tern, 11 Common Tern, 3 Red-throated Diver and 2 Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Sightings were limited to 10 Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Just 2 Swift flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Passage waders included 17 Whimbrel and a flock of 200 Dunlin.

Black Guillemot leads offshore sightings

10th May 2007 - overcast SW6/7
Offshore
Observations through the course of the morning (0820-0920 & 1100-1200) were highlighted by a summer plumaged Black Guillemot drifting out of Morecambe Bay on the ebbing tide. Other sightings included 40 Gannet, 15 Sandwich Tern, 5 Manx Shearwater, 3 Arctic Tern, 3 Razorbill, 3 Kittiwake and single Shag, Red-throated Diver, Fulmar, Guillemot and pale phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
A single Lesser Whitethroat and Willow Warbler remain along with 6 Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 8 Swift and a single Swallow battled their way across the sea.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 10 Whimbrel were logged.

Pomarine Skua leads offshore highlights

8th May 2007 - heavy rain clearing to sun and showers WSW 6/5
Rarities
The female Serin remains although proving elusive in the strong wind.
Offshore
Morning observations, once the torrential rain cleared, (0930-1100) were led by a pale-phase Pomarine Skua heading into Morecambe Bay. Other sightings included 80 Gannet, 24 Sandwich Tern, 18 Common Scoter, 12 Red-throated Diver, 10 Arctic Tern, 2 Arctic Skuas and small numbers of Manx Shearwater, Fulmar and Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
An increase to 11 Wheatear hinted at a small movement despite the weather, although other sightings were limited to single lingering Lesser Whitethroat and Willow Warbler and the Hooded Crow.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow and a single House Martin were on the move.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 15 Whimbrel were located and the three Golden Plover remain.
Miscellaneous
A Little Egret continues to roam the island.

7th May 2007 - sunny spells, heavy showers SW 4/5/6
Rarities
The female Serin lingers and continues to draw an appreciative audience.
Offshore
At least one Shag remains offshore. Combined totals for three hours of observations through the day (0700-1700) were 185 Gannet, 100 Kittiwake, 72 Common Scoter, 50 Sandwich Tern, 14 Guillemot, 12 Arctic Tern, 10 Manx Shearwater, 4 Fulmar, 2 Little Tern and 2 Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
There was no evidence of any new arrivals with just 4 Wheatear, single Willow Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat and the long-staying Hooded Crow logged.
Diurnal Migration
Again limited to a few Swallows coming in off the Irish Sea.
Wildfowl and Waders
Just 10 Whimbrel were seen as numbers continue to dwindle. In addition, 3 Golden Plover were logged - a rather late date and 400 Knot continue to feed along the western shore.
Breeding Birds
Census work reveals the presence of 20-22 breeding pairs of Stonechat on the island.
Miscellaneous
A single Little Egret continues to stalk the island's tidal pools.

Serin attracts the crowds

6th May 2007 - overcast then rain, heavy at times SW5/6
Rarities
The female Serin remains for a third day and finally attracts a crowd of admirers.
Offshore
At least 3 Shag remain and a flock of 50 Arctic Terns flew into Morecambe Bay during morning observations (0930-1130) which provided variety if not quantity, totals included 40 Gannet, 26 Sandwich Tern, 21 Common Scoter, 7 Guillemot, 5 Little Tern, 4 Red-throated Diver and lesser numbers of Manx Shearwater, Kittiwake and Razorbill. A second watch on the falling tide (1530-1630) provided 45 Common Scoter, 38 Gannet, 11 Sandwich Tern, 4 Guillemot, 3 Little Tern and single Red-throated Diver, Fulmar and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Apart from the Serin sightings were few with just 3 Wheatear, single Willow Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat and the long-staying Hooded Crow logged.
Diurnal Migration
Nothing much in evidence apart from a few Swallows coming in off the sea.
Wildfowl and Waders
A single Greenshank remains, a further decrease saw just 20 Whimbrel logged and 400 Knot were along the western shore.

Migrants slow to a trickle

The female Serin remained although it proved to be flighty and elusive.
Offshore
Another quiet day with just small numbers of Gannet, Common Scoter and Sandwich Tern logged.
Grounded Migrants
The Hooded Crow remains as passage slows to a trickle with just 26 Wheatear and 3 Willow Warbler logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Another decrease saw just 24 Whimbrel logged, however flocks of passage waders along the western shore included 1000 Dunlin and 250 Knot.
Breeding Birds
Another increase in the Sedge Warbler population was evident, other records of territorial birds included 4 Grasshopper Warbler and an island record 14 Lesser Whitethroat. The first Lapwing chicks have hatched and Stonechats are now feeding first broods.

Serin Stunner

4th May 2007 - hazy sun NE2
Rarities
The bird of the spring so far, a female Serin, was found late in the day - this is just the second county record following a male, also at Walney Island, on 17th May 1998.
Offshore
A quiet morning over the sea with just 60 Sandwich Tern and 16 Gannet logged (0700-0800).
Grounded Migrants
Apart from the Serin small numbers of migrants continued to move through with today's totals including 30 Wheatear, 9 Willow Warbler, 2 Whinchat, single Redstart and White Wagtail and another Lesser Whitethroat. The Hooded Crow also put in another appearance.
Wildfowl and Waders
The drake Pintail looks set to summer and a few Teal and Shoveler remain. A total of 34 Whimbrel were seen along with single Black-tailed Godwit, Greenshank and Common Sandpiper. Waders along the western shore included 100 Ringed Plover, 150 Turnstone, 350 Dunlin and 2 Purple Sandpiper.
Butterflies
A Common Blue was on the wing - the earliest ever recorded on the island.

A pale phase Arctic Skua flew into Morecambe Bay and other early morning sightings (0715-0815) involved 65 Common Scoter, 60 Sandwich Tern, 16 Arctic Tern, 12 Gannet, 4 Guillemot, 3 Red-throated Diver and single Fulmar and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Small numbers of migrant passerines continue to move through, today's totals involved 27 Wheatear, 14 Willow Warbler, 3 Blackcap, 2 Lesser Whitethroat and single Whinchat and White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
Another light passage with 20 Swallow the only movement of note.
Wildfowl and Waders
A Greenshank was perhaps a passage bird and a flock of 200 Sanderling fed along the western shore. A total of 40 Whimbrel was a decrease on recent days.
Breeding Birds
There was another noticeable increase in the numbers of territorial Sedge Warbler, a less spectacular rise in Whitethroat numbers and ringing suggests a further Lesser Whitethroat arrival.
Moths
An increase in activity provided several new additions for the year including Shuttle-shaped Dart, Buff-tip, Flame Shoulder, Powdered Quaker and the impressive Small Elephant Hawk-moth.

Great Northern Diver and Spotted Redshanks headline

2nd May 2007 - bright and sunny NE 5/4/3/2

A Great Northern Diver drifted close inshore and the highlights of early morning observations (0745-0845) were 110 Sandwich Tern, 43 Arctic Tern, 25 Common Scoter, 20 Gannet and 8 Red-throated Diver along with small numbers of Manx Shearwater, Guillemot and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Further new arrivals were in evidence amongst totals of 32 Wheatear, 18 Willow Warbler and single Whinchat, Whitethroat and Chiffchaff. The Hooded Crow still roams the island and a Merlin continues to linger.
Diurnal Migration
A light passage of 30 Swallow was logged along with a single Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
The long-staying Spotted Redshank was joined by a second individual and 54 Whimbrel were again logged. At least 2 Purple Sandpiper remain amongst 200 Turnstone.
Butterflies and Moths
After yesterdays first arrival, an influx of Red Admiral was evident and the first Wall Brown were on the wing. Day flying moths included several newly emerged Cinnabar and both Pebble Prominent and Dog's Tooth were attracted to the MV light overnight.

Whimbrel numbers continue to build

Clear conditions and a strong offshore wind (0715-0815) combined to produce few sightings. Highlights were 80 Sandwich Tern, 40 Common Scoter, 20 Arctic Tern, 5 Guillemot and 3 Gannet.

The Hooded Crow remains and totals of 29 Wheatear, 14 Willow Warbler and a single Whinchat and Chiffchaff included some new arrivals.
Diurnal Migration
No coordinated observations were undertaken although a late Grey Wagtail and Merlin were logged and 2 Swift flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
A single drake Pintail continues to linger. The single "black" Ruff and at least 2 Purple Sandpiper remain along with 4 Bar-tailed Godwit resplendent in their summer plumage and a flock of 200 Sanderling fed on the edge of the tide. A check of all the usual sites produced a total of 54 Whimbrel.
Breeding Birds
A further increase in the number of Sedge Warbler at breeding sites occurred, two Reed Warbler continue to hold territory and good numbers of Lesser Whitethroat remain scattered across the island.
Butterflies
The first Red Admiral of the year was recorded.
