Early Grasshopper Warbler

9th April 2017 – hazy sunshine SE1, SW2/3 later
Offshore
The sea provided 30 Sandwich Tern and 4 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
A Grasshopper Warbler was the earliest ever recorded on the island, however Wheatear dominated with 100 birds logged. Also seen were 12 White Wagtail, 5 Willow Warbler, 4 Blackcap, 3 Chiffchaff and a Fieldfare.
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 80 Pink-footed Geese headed north while 25 Swallow, 5 Sand Martin, 2 Lesser Redpoll and 2 Siskin were also seen.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 200 pale-bellied and 24 dark-bellied birds and the drake Gadwall remains amongst 8 Shoveler. Waders included 450 Golden Plover, 170 Sanderling and 9 Black-tailed Godwit
Miscellaneous
A few Little Egret remain and the Great Spotted Woodpecker continues to drum expectedly.
Moths
Tawny Pinion was new for the year.
