12th October 2023 – bright and sunny ENE1/2
Offshore
A scan of the sea revealed just 24 Shag ,7 Red-throated Diver and 7 Common Scoter. The Long-tailed Duck remains along the eastern shore.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 2 Redwing and 2 Song Thrush; however, another influx of tits was also apparent with 28 Blue Tit, 8 Great Tit and 3 Coal Tit logged along with 24 Goldcrest, 5 Chiffchaff and a Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 500 Jackdaw, 375 Pink-footed Goose, 113 Whooper Swan, 80 Skylark, 76 Swallow, 55 Chaffinch, 30 Tree Sparrow, 16 Carrion Crow, 12 Siskin, 4 House Martin, 3 Lesser Redpoll and 2 Brambling flew through.
Miscellaneous
Two Merlin were logged.
11th October 2023 – overcast/rain then showers WNW4/5
Offshore
A check of the sea as the rain relented (0900-1000) 180 Common Scoter, 20 Shag, 16 Red-throated Diver, 14 Brent Goose, 11 Pintail, 9 Shelduck, 2 Guillemot and a Scaup. The Long-tailed Duck remains along the east shore.
Diurnal Migration
A Swallow was amongst a trickle of Meadow Pipit.
Miscellaneous
Raptors involved 2 Merlin and single Short-eared Owl, Peregrine, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.
Butterflies and Moths
Immigrants in the moth trap involved 2 Rusty Dot Pearl and The Gem.
10th October 2023 – overcast/mis SSE2/3
Offshore
The Long-tailed Duck remains along the eastern shore
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 260 Redwing and 2 Fieldfare. Another small influx of tits was also apparent and a single Goldcrest and Wheatear were recorded.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 100 Skylark, 80 Chaffinch, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 4 Tree Sparrow, 3 Siskin, 2 Grey Wagtail and 2 Swallow flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Garganey remains and 20 Greenshank were seen.
Miscellaneous
Single Kestrel and Sparrowhawk were logged.
9th October 2023 – overcast/mist/murk/drizzle W2/3
Offshore
The Long-tailed Duck remains along the eastern shore
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 5 Fieldfare and 4 Redwing. Otherwise obviously newly arrived birds were limited to 3 Goldcrest and 2 Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 40 Chaffinch, 20 Pied Wagtail, 11 Siskin and 2 Swallow flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
A female Garganey – the latest ever recorded on the island - was a surprise amongst 130 Teal.

A Merlin was logged.
8th October 2023 – overcast V1
Offshore
The Long-tailed Duck remains along the eastern shore
Grounded Migrants
An influx of tits was apparent with 40 Blue Tit, 20 Coal Tit, 15 Long-tailed Tit and 6 Great Tit logged along with 19 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 126 Pink-footed Geese, 80 Chaffinch, 10 Tree Sparrow, 4 Siskin and single Swallow, Rock Pipit and Grey Wagtail flew through.
Miscellaneous
The Marsh Harrier continues to hunt the island.
7th October 2023 – overcast/murk/showers SW4
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0800-0900) produced 131 Common Scoter, 9 Razorbill, 3 Red-throated Diver, 9 Razorbill, 2 Red-breasted Merganser and single Kittiwake and Gannet. In addition, the eastern shore added 11 Great Crested Grebe, 8 Sandwich Tern and single Black Guillemot and Long-tailed Duck
Grounded Migrants
Limited to 3 Goldcrest and a Chiffchaff.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains and a Marsh Harrier continues to hunt the island.
3rd October 2023 – early rain then showers W4/6
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0800-0900) produced 345 Common Scoter, 77 Gannet, 53 Razorbill, 12 Red-throated Diver, 2 Shag and single Kittiwake and Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to a single Goldcrest.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains and a Marsh Harrier continues to hunt the island while 4 Raven and a Merlin were also seen.
2nd October 2023 – overcast SW2/3
Offshore
A Long-tailed Duck and 2 Little Gull were feeding along the eastern shore at high tide along with 2 Shag, 2 Red-throated Diver and 2 Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Totals involved 44 Robin, 14 Wren, 10 Stonechat, 10 Goldcrest, 4 Song Thrush and single Wheatear and Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
Chaffinch dominated with 180 birds logged, also seen were 60 Skylark, 30 Pied Wagtail, 12 Greenfinch, 5 Swallow, 5 Grey Wagtail, 2 Siskin, 2 Coal Tit and a Tree Sparrow.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 3000 Oystercatcher and 400 Turnstone.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains and a Marsh Harrier continues to hunt the island while both Merlin and Peregrine were also seen.
1st October 2023 – early rain clearing SW3/4
Offshore
Early morning observations (0730-0830) produced 330 Common Scoter, 65 Gannet, 8 Shag, 7 Red-throated Diver, 6 Sandwich Tern, 4 Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Pintail and a Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Just 5 Blackcap and 2 Chiffchaff were logged.
Diurnal Migration
A Tree Sparrow flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 300 Knot.
Miscellaneous
The Marsh Harrier also continues to hunt the island.
