Little Gull brace

Two Little Gulls just managed to make it onto the year list, also seen (1000-1100) were 46 Kittiwake, 7 Common Scoter and a Red-throated Diver.

Wildfowl included 8 dark and one pale-bellied Brent Goose and 4 Shoveler. A group of 5 Greenshank were the pick of the waders.
Miscellaneous
The record 64 Little Egret are still in residence and at least one Tree Sparrow remains.
Ringing
December brought the poor ringing year (1305 birds handled in 2015 compared to 4713 in 2014) to an unspectacular end with just 33 birds of 8 species. Individual species totals were as follows (retraps in brackets), Goldfinch 4 (14), Chaffinch 3, Blackbird 2 (1), Song Thrush 1 (1), Wren 1, Reed Bunting (3), Robin (2) and Great Tit (1).

Water Pipits still in residence

Rarities
At least 3 Water Pipits were again amongst 25 Rock Pipits and 6 Meadow Pipits feeding in the flooded horse paddocks along Carr Lane..

The Brent Goose flock again held 204 pale-bellied birds, also seen were 530 Teal and 5 Shoveler.
Miscellaneous
A Jay was the best of the rest.

Water Pipits remain

At least 2 Water Pipits were again amongst 20 Rock Pipits and 6 Meadow Pipits feeding in the flooded horse paddocks along Carr Lane..

A check of the sea (0900-1000) produced 112 Common Scoter and 3 Razorbill.

At least 3 Water Pipits were amongst 35 Rock Pipits, 20 Skylark and 4 Meadow Pipits in the flooded horse paddocks along Carr Lane..
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 18 Pink-footed Geese moved south.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 204 pale-bellied Brent Goose, 62 Barnacle Goose and 12 dark-bellied Brent Goose while 8 Greenshank were the pick of the waders.

Purple Sandpipers

27th December 2015 – bright and sunny SE1/2/3
Offshore
A check of the sea early moring revealed 20 Common Scoter, 6 Shag, 2 Red-throated Diver and a Kittiwake.
Diurnal Migration
A skein of 30 Pink-footed Geese moved south.
Wildfowl and Waders
A group of 16 Purple Sandpiper were the pick of the waders.
Miscellaneous
Two overwintering Tree Sparrow were located.

Water Pipit

26th December 2015 – overcast/rain SE1
Rarities
A Water Pipit was amongst 20 Rock Pipit and 30 Skylark in the flooded horse paddocks along Carr Lane.

The Brent Goose flock held 175 pale-bellied birds, also seen were 5 Shoveler and 3 Pink-footed Geese.

Record numbers of Little Egret overwinter

A little more activity than of late over the sea (0830-0930) with 174 Common Scoter, 5 Razorbill, 3 Red-throated Diver and single Guillemot and Kittiwake logged.
Miscellaneous
A record 64 Little Egret were in winter residence while 20 Long-tailed Tit and 3 Coal Tit were also recorded.

Great Northern Diver still in residence

19th December 2015 – rain clearing to showers SW1/2/3
Offshore
A check of the maritime shore revealed just 6 Common Scoter and a Red-throated Diver, however, a Great Northern Diver remained along the sheltered eastern shore.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 3800 Eider, 65 dark-bellied Brent Goose and 8 Shoveler while Greenshank and Black-tailed Godwit were the pick of the waders.

Velvet Scoter

13th December 2015 – overcast/early frost/rain later SE1/2
Offshore
Early morning observations (0855-0955) saw birds taking advantage of the lull in the weather with 50 Red-throated Diver, 23 Common Scoter, 18 Shag, 12 Razorbill, 4 Red-breasted Merganser and 2 Goosander logged. Later two female Velvet Scoter were found sheltering on the eastern side of the island at high tide.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 285 Pink-footed Geese flew through.
Miscellaneous
A Yellowhammer was an unexpected bonus. A Merlin continues to hunt the island though a dead Short-eared Owl was a likely victim of the recent wet and windy weather.

Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 98 pale-bellied and a single dark bellied bird. Waders included 1100 Golden Plover, 1040 Redshank 7 Greenshank and 7 Purple Sandpiper.

Little Egret remain prominent across the island with around 60 birds present.

Great Northern Diver

4th December 2015 – sunny spells/rain by evening SW4/5/6

A Great Northern Diver sheltered in the lee of the island off the eastern shore.

The drake Scaup remains while waders included 5 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
Little Egret remain prominent across the island with 60 birds logged.

A poor November

30th November 2015 – overcast/rain SW5/6
Ringing
Another disappointing month with the weather compromising ringing activities (only 3 days recorded no rainfall). A total of 117 birds of 16 species were handled during the month, individual species totals were as follows (retraps in brackets). Goldfinch 23 (11), Blackbird 18, Chaffinch 11 (1), Goldcrest 9, Wren 5 (1), Song Thrush 5 (1), Redwing 5, Brambling 4, Greenfinch 2, Dunnock 1 (2), Robin 1 (2), Sparrowhawk,1, Chiffchaff 1, Long-tailed Tit 1, Reed Bunting 1 and Blue Tit (2).

Jack Snipe

An early morning check of the sea (0800-0900) proved very disappointing with only a single Kittiwake logged.

Wildfowl included 10 Shoveler and 3 Pink-footed Geese and a Jack Snipe was the pick of the waders.

Several Grey Seal pups have been seen on the island in recent weeks – the first proven breeding record for the island.

Scaup newly arrived

An early morning check of the sea (0800-0900) proved disappointing with only 10 Common Scoter, 3 Kittiwake and a Red-throated Diver logged.

A drake Scaup was newly arrived and a Greenshank was amongst the waders present..

A Peregrine and 2 Raven were the best of the rest.

Barnacle Goose influx

22nd November 2015 – cold, bright and sunny NNE1/2
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea (0830-0900) revealed 10 Red-throated Diver, 8 Shag, 3 Goosander, 3 Kittiwake and a Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Further hints of movement were provided by 2 Goldcrest amongst small numbers of Fieldfare, Redwing, Song Thrush and Blackbird.
Diurnal Migration
Some movement was evident with 70 Pink-footed Goose, 8 Twite, 6 Whooper Swan, 5 Siskin, 3 Lesser Redpoll and a Pied Wagtail logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pick of the wildfowl involved an influx of 80 Barnacle Geese while at least 4 Greenshank remain.
Miscellaneous
Little Egret remain prominent across the island.

A hint of cold weather movement

21st November 2015 – cold, bright and sunny NNW4

An early morning check of the sea saw little evidence of movement with just 2 Red-throated Diver, 2 Kittiwake and a Razorbill logged.
Grounded Migrants
There was a hint of cold weather movement with 25 Fieldfare, 9 Blackbird, 4 Song Thrush and a Goldcrest logged.
Diurnal Migration
A Buzzard headed north east over the island to provide the highlight of the day, also seen were 160 Starling and 8 Whooper Swan, pursued by the local Oystercatcher population .

A group of 20 pale-bellied Brent Goose were recorded.

Little Owl and Short-eared Owl were still hunting the island and a Water Rail squealed.

A check over the sea (1230-1330) provided 21 Kittiwake, 3 Red-throated Diver, 2 Razorbill and single Great Skua and Gannet.

A colour-ringed Oystercatcher had been marked at its breeding grounds at LanghĂłlmi, FljĂłtshlĂ­Ă°, Iceland on 18th June 2015.

Leach’s Petrel

A check of the sea between the showers revealed a single Leach’s Petrel but little else.

The Brent Goose flock held 120 pale-bellied birds, also seen were 3 Pink-footed Goose, 2 Shoveler and a Greenshank.

The Twite flock increased to 70 birds.

Glaucous Gull and Black Guillemot

14th November 2015 – overcast/rain W3/4

Early morning observations (0730-0830) proved disappointing with just 20 Common Scoter, 2 Kittiwake and a Red-throated Diver logged. A check of the eastern shore on the rising tide revealed a Black Guillemot.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 109 pale-bellied birds, also seen were 6 Shoveler, 3 Pink-footed Goose and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
A Glaucous Gull roosted on the rising tide, a total of 66 Little Egret were seen along with 30 Twite. Raptors involved Merlin, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Arctic Skua

Observations on the falling tide (1250-1350) produced 30 Kittiwake, 3 Common Scoter and single Arctic Skua, Gannet and Fulmar.

A group of 60 Little Egrert congregated on the sheltered eastern shore.

A check of the sea as the rain cleared (1100-1200) produced 25 Common Scoter, 4 Razorbill, 2 Guillemot and single Gannet, Red-throated Diver and Kittiwake.

Limited to single Blackcap, Goldcrest and Redwing.
Diurnal Migration
Only single Siskin and Lesser Redpoll were logged.

Wildfowl included 140 pale-bellied Brent Goose, 50 Dark-bellied Brent Goose, 11 Barnacle Goose, 8 Whooper Swan and 3 Pink-footed Goose while waders included 17 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.

Whooper Swans on the move

Newly grounded birds involved 46 Redwing, 33 Blackbird, 17 Fieldfare, 7 Goldcrest, 4 Chiffchaff, 2 Song Thrush and single Blackcap and Mistle Thrush.

The improvement in visibility saw 45 Pink-footed Goose, 44 Whooper Swan, 18 Meadow Pipit and single Siskin, Lesser Redpoll and Brambling logged.

Black Redstart

3rd November 2015 – Fog finally clearing to misty murk SE2/3

A Gannet materialised out of the early morning gloom.
Grounded
A female/first-winter Black Redstart was the pick of the mornings grounded birds which also included 36 Redwing, 28 Blackbird, 6 Goldcrest, 3 Song Thrush, 3 Mistle Thrush, 2 Fieldfare and single Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Long-tailed Tit.
Diurnal Migration
A slight increase in visibility produced 215 Pink-footed Goose, 175 Fieldfare, 100 Redwing, 35 Meadow Pipit, 33 Chaffinch, 3 Whooper Swan, 3 Brambling, 3 Siskin and single Mistle Thrush and Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 11 Barnacle Goose and 10 Shoveler while 17 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit were the best of the waders.

A flock of 20 Twite were logged and single Short-eared Owl, Merlin and Water Rail were also seen.

Thrushes and finches

The island remained fogbound throughout the day, however, a few birds made it through the gloom with 23 Redwing, 11 Blackbird, 8 Goldcrest, 7 Song Thrush and 2 Fieldfare logged.
Diurnal Migration
Some movement was detected despite the poor visibility with 110 Pink-footed Goose, 20 Fieldfare, 17 Whooper Swan and 6 Brambling recorded.

Black-tailed Godwit and Greenshank were the pick of the waders seen.

The flock of 30 Twite were still present with single Merlin and Water Rail also seen.

Fogbound Firecrest

1st November 2015 – dense fog SE1
Rarities
A fogbound Firecrest was located mid-morning.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 21 Blackbird, 16 Redwing, 4 Song Thrush and 2 Fieldfare. Also seen were 3 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Despite the dense fog through much of the day there was some evidence of movement with 40 Pink-footed Goose, 20 Fieldfare and 11 Barnacle Goose logged.

A total of 30 Twite were seen and a Water Rail was the best of the rest.

Another Yellow-browed Warbler

31st October 2015 – overcast/rain later SE3/2/1

The third Yellow-browed Warbler of the autumn was located on the island mid-morning.

A glance over the sea as the weather deteriorated revealed Red-throated Diver and Common Scoter.

Early morning thrushes involved 17 Blackbird, 15 Redwing, 4 Song Thrush and 3 Fieldfare. Also seen were single Goldcrest and Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
Thrushes and finches dominated passage with 150 Fieldfare, 130 Chaffinch, 40 Woodpigeon, 32 Jackdaw, 24 Meadow Pipit, 18 Redwing, 11 Twite, 7 Brambling, 7 Greenfinch, 4 Rock Pipit, 4 Mistle Thrush and single Lesser Redpoll, Siskin and Whooper Swan.

Brent Geese begin to build

A quick check of the sea revealed 26 Common Scoter and a solitary Gannet.

Early morning thrushes involved 5 Blackbird and 2 Song Thrush. Additional sightings involved 2 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Just a single Lesser Redpoll was recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock contained 125 pale-bellied birds and 42 dark-bellied birds, also seen were 1550 Wigeon and a Black-tailed Godwit.

A quick check of the sea revealed 3 Shag but little else of note..

Early morning thrushes involved 36 Redwing, 14 Blackbird, 7 Song Thrush and 4 Fieldfare. Additional sightings involved 10 Goldcrest.

Movement between the showers included 50 Meadow Pipit, 21 Siskin, 18 Skylark, 12 Whooper Swan, 10 Chaffinch, 2 Brambling and a Lesser Redpoll.

First Purple Sandpiper returns

27th October 2015 – sunny spells SE4

A check of the sea on the falling tide only provided 3 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A few more birds than of late with 27 Fieldfare, 8 Redwing, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Song Thrush and single Mistle Thrush and Blackcap logged.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 670 Jackdaw were overhead along with 38 Meadow Pipit and single Swallow and Lesser Redpoll.

The first Purple Sandpiper has returned to the island and additional sightings included 12 Greenshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and 9 Swallow.

Two Short-eared Owls were flushed from the saltmarsh by the rising tide while raptors included Peregrine and Merlin.

Another check of the sea (0830-0930) was this time highlighted by a Black Guillemot amongst 81 Common Scoter, 38 Gannet, 27 Razorbill and a Red-throated Diver.

New arrivals were limited to 7 Goldcrest.

Three Pink-footed Geese were grounded.

Great Northern Diver

A check of the sea (0800-1000) was highlighted by a Great Northern Diver along with 280 Gannet, 96 Common Scoter, 56 Razorbill, 4 Kittiwake and single Guillemot and Red-throated Diver.

A check of the sea provided 23 Gannet, 18 Common Scoter, 10 Razorbill, 5 Kittiwake and 4 Shag.

Limited to 6 Goldcrest and single Redwing, Song Thrush and Fieldfare.

Again pretty quiet with just 2 Lesser Redpoll and a Siskin logged.

First Brambling of autumn

19th October 2015 – overcast then sunny spells NE3/2/1

At least 3 Shag remain.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 11 Blackbird, 9 Redwing, 3 Song Thrush and a Fieldfare. Also seen were 6 Goldcrest and a Blackcap – the latter has been very scarce on the island this autumn.
Diurnal Migration
A Brambling was logged but otherwise records were limited to 50 Jackdaw, 45 Pink-footed Goose, 7 Tree Sparrow and 3 Lesser Redpoll.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Scaup remains while 5 Shoveler and 18 Greenshank were also seen.

Additional sightings included 2 Merlin and single Peregrine, Barn Owl and Water Rail.

Short-eared Owl double

18th October 2015 – overcast NE2/3
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes again dominated with 65 Redwing, 15 Fieldfare, 5 Blackbird and 3 Song Thrush. Also seen were 2 Chiffchaff and 2 Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Visible migration continues to drop off, although 400 Jackdaw and 350 Pink-footed Goose were logged additional sightings were limited to 20 Meadow Pipit and single Lesser Redpoll, Grey Wagtail and Tree Sparrow.

The female Scaup remains.
Miscellaneous
Two Short-eared Owl were logged along with single Merlin and Water Rail.

Short-eared Owl

17th October 2015 – clear start then sunny spells NE1/2
Offshore
The group of 8 Shag were still feeding offshore mid-morning.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes again dominated with 63 Redwing, 23 Blackbird, 13 Song Thrush and 7 Fieldfare quickly melting away into clear skies at dawn. Also seen were 4 Goldcrest, 2 Stonechat and a Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
The record autumn passage of Pink-footed Geese over the island continued with a further 685 birds logged, however, otherwise is was disappointingly quiet with just single Lesser Redpoll and Grey Wagtail additional highlights.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Scaup and 17 Greenshank remain while 3 Shoveler were also logged.
Miscellaneous
Dawn also provided a Short-eared Owl while single Merlin and Water Rail also recorded and Little Egret remain prominent.

The light trap held Brick and Large Wainscot.

16th October 2015 – overcast NE1/2/3

Typically after the long wait to get the first Yellow-browed Warbler of the autumn a second bird immediately comes along..
Offshore
A group of 8 Shag fed offshore. Also seen were small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Common Scoter and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Again the supporting cast was sparse, early morning thrushes involved 17 Redwing and 4 Blackbird while additional warblers were limited to 11 Goldcrest and 4 Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
The skies also proved to be generally quiet compared to recent days although highlights involved 145 Pink-footed Goose, 100 Meadow Pipit, 8 Lesser Redpoll and single Snow Bunting and Fieldfare – the latter two the first of the autumn.

The Brent Goose flock held 16 pale-bellied birds and the female Scaup and 14 Greenshank remain.

A male Hen Harrier hunted the island, at least one Merlin remains while at least 71 Little Egret gathered as the light faded.

Yellow-browed Warbler at last! plus Black Redstart

15th October 2015 – overcast with sunny spells NE1/2
Rarities
Following the mass influx into Britain and multiple sightings on the other side of Morecambe Bay a Yellow-browed Warbler finally made landfall on the island. First seen at 1220hrs it was still present at 1630hrs.
Offshore
Again only a handful of Gannet and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
A female/first winter Black Redstart was also located while early morning thrushes involved 15 Redwing and 14 Blackbird and 5 Song Thrush. Also seen were 3 Goldcrest and a Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
Passage was dominated by a huge flock of 1100 Jackdaw along with 665 Pink-footed Goose – it has been the best ever autumn for this species, 280 Starling, 32 Linnet, 22 Meadow Pipit, 10 Tree Sparrow, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 3 Swallow, 2 Siskin and a Grey Wagtail.

The female Scaup remains and 15 Greenshank roosted.

The first 3 Twite of the autumn appeared and a Water Rail was present.

Passage continues, todays assortment included 440 Jackdaw, 210 Starling, 170 Pink-footed Goose, 125 Skylark, 100 Meadow Pipit, 58 Linnet, 45 Swallow, 27 Pied/White Wagtail, 10 Tree Sparrow, 10 Chaffinch, 7 Reed Bunting, 4 Greenfinch, 2 Rock Pipit, 2 Lesser Redpoll and single House Martin, Siskin and Mistle Thrush.

Single Whooper Swan, Scaup and 7 pale-bellied Brent Goose were amongst 1000 Wigeon.

Passage through the morning produced 400 Meadow Pipit, 110 Pink-footed Goose, 110 Jackdaw, 75 Linnet, 70 Pied/White Wagtail, 12 Chaffinch, 12 Reed Bunting, 7 Greenfinch, 6 Tree Sparrow, 4 Grey Wagtail, 4 Lesser Redpoll and 3 Raven.

Walney contributed 23 birds to the international pale-bellied Brent Goose census and 7 dark-bellied birds were also seen.

A skein of 32 Barnacle Geese and a single Whooper Swan headed north. Also seen were 50 Meadow Pipit, 8 Swallow and single Grey Wagtail, Rock Pipit and Lesser Redpoll .

First Redwing of the autumn

6th October 2015 – early rain/murk clearing later S4/3/2/1

Early morning observations (0730—0900) produced 200 Gannet, 77 Common Scoter, 6 Razorbill and 4 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Although the first Redwing of the autumn arrived it remained quiet despite the promising conditions with just 11 Goldcrest, 4 Chiffchaff and single Coal Tit logged.
Diurnal Migration
Pink-footed Geese continue to head south with a further 125 birds recorded. Also seen were 100 Meadow Pipit, 21 Jackdaw, 15 Swallow, 3 Grey Wagtail and 2 Siskin.

Waders included 10 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 46 Little Egret were strewn across the island, a Water Rail squealed and birds of prey included Barn Owl, Little Owl, Peregrine and Merlin.

The murk provided for a subdued diurnal passage with just 200 Meadow Pipit, 40 Pink-footed Goose, 30 Linnet, 30 Pied/White Wagtail, 22 Skylark, 10 Swallow, 8 Siskin, 3 Lesser Redpoll and 3 Grey Wagtail logged.

Another heavy movement of Pink-footed Geese saw 5115 birds logged through the morning. Also seen were 1550 Meadow Pipit, 480 Linnet, 225 Swallow, 170 Skylark, 85 Pied/White Wagtail, 30 Goldfinch, 11 Siskin, 10 Grey Wagtail, 10 Chaffinch, 8 House Martin, 7 Sand Martin, 3 Coal Tit and a single Whooper Swan logged..

The largest movement of the autumn produced a massive southbound passage of Pink-footed Geese with 6130 birds logged through the morning. Also seen were 1350 Meadow Pipit, 225 Linnet, 160 Starling, 80 Skylark, 60 Swallow, 42 Pied/White Wagtail, 32 Chaffinch, 30 Tree Sparrow, 30 Goldfinch, 18 Lesser Redpoll, 14 Grey Wagtail, 12 Greenfinch, 7 Siskin, 4 Reed Bunting, 3 Jackdaw and a Buzzard.

The only observations today were on the evening tide (1545-1645) – not the best time to be checking the sea. However, 8 Red-throated Diver were logged amongst small numbers of Common Scoter, Guillemot, Gannet, Kittiwake and Sandwich Tern.

Only 20 Common Scoter, 11 Sandwich Tern, 8 Gannet and 3 Kittiwake were recorded.

Although 18 White Wagtail and 18 Robin were logged additional sightings were limited to 6 Wheatear, 2 Chiffchaff and single Yellow Wagtail, Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Further light passage produced 64 Swallow, 32 Meadow Pipit, 10 Pied/Wagtail, 5 Grey Wagtail, 3 Siskin, 3 Lesser Redpoll and a Yellow Wagtail.
