Black Redstart and Marsh Harrier

26th December 2023 – sun and showers WNW2/3
Offshore
A check of the sea (0900-1000) produced 32 Common Scoter, 26 Kittiwake, 7 Shag and 7 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A late Black Redstart was found and a Goldcrest was also unusual.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 11 Woodcock were logged and additional waders included 1000 Dunlin, 100 Sanderling and 7 Greenshank A Goosander was the pick of the wildfowl.
Miscellaneous
A Marsh Harrier put in another appearance and the Hooded Crow was the best of the rest. A flock of 40 Siskin was another unusual sighting for the time of the year.

Offshore
A check of the sea (0845-0945) produced 54 Common Scoter, 27 Kittiwake, 9 Razorbill, 8 Red-throated Diver, 3 Shag, 3 Guillemot and 2 Red-breasted Merganser.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 4 Greenshank amongst 860 Redshank while 30 Pintail and 4 Shoveler were the pick of the waders.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow was the best of the rest.

Great Northern Diver

17th December 2023 – overcast/mizzle/murk SSW4/6
Offshore
A check of the eastern shore revealed 13 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Shag and a Great Northern Diver.
Wildfowl and Waders
Four Shoveler were logged and waders included 2530 Knot and 2 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow was the best of the rest.

Jack Snipe and Woodcock

16th December 2023 – overcast SW3/5
Offshore
A check of the sea revealed 87 Common Scoter, 9 Red-throated Diver and 3 Red-breasted Merganser.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 3000 Knot, 800 Dunlin and a single Jack Snipe and Woodcock.
Miscellaneous
A Raven was the best of the rest.

A Grey Wagtail was the highlight.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 8 Jack Snipe amongst 25 Snipe and a Goosander was the pick of the wildfowl.

The long-staying Hooded Crow and a Raven were the best of the rest.

Water Pipits reappear

14th December 2023 – early rain then sunny spells W2/3
Offshore
Highlights over the sea were 85 Common Scoter, 37 Shag, 22 Red-breasted Merganser, 8 Red-throated Diver and 2 Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Single Mistle Thrush and Goldcrest were logged, however the highlight was 5 Water Pipit amongst 70 Skylark, 48 Meadow Pipit and 24 Rock Pipit in the waterlogged fields around Biggar.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 1244 Wigeon, 1003 Teal, 526 light-bellied Brent Goose, 475 Shelduck, 159 Pintail and 7 Shoveler. Waders included 5012 Oystercatcher, 1327 Redshank, 971 Dunlin, 800 Golden Plover, 854 Lapwing, 779 Curlew, 277 Turnstone, 215 Grey Plover, 169 Sanderling, 135 Ringed Plover, 88 Snipe, 56 Bar-tailed Godwit, 13 Greenshank, 2 Purple Sandpiper and a Jack Snipe.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow and a Buzzard were seen and 46 Little Egret, 2 Raven and 2 Water Rail were the best of the rest.

Long-tailed Ducks

13th December 2023 – bright and sunny N2/3
Offshore
Highlights from observations over the sea (0800-0900) were 27 Shag, 6 Red-breasted Merganser, 4 Red-throated Diver and 2 Long-tailed Duck.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 9 Greenshank, 2 Woodcock and 2 Purple Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
A Raven and 2 Water Rail were the best of the rest.

Only a handful of Twite appear to have returned

12th December 2023 – overcast/rain then showers E2/3

A Fieldfare was logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A total of 531 light-bellied Brent Geese and 10 Greenshank were logged.
Miscellaneous
A Water Rail was seen and 10 Twite were logged.

Black Guillemot and Marsh Harrier double

10th December 2023 – overcast/rain soon SSE2/4
Offshore
Observations from the eastern shore at high tide revealed 24 Red-breasted Merganser, 11 Great Crested Grebe, 6 Shag, 4 Red-throated Diver and a Black Guillemot.
Wildfowl and Waders
A group of 7 Shoveler were seen.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow and 2 Marsh Harriers were recorded.

Offshore
Observations over the sea (0830-0930) produced 100 Common Scoter, 14 Red-breasted Merganser, 12 Red-throated Diver, 12 Shag, 7 Razorbill and single Gannet and Guillemot.
Wildfowl and Waders
A group of 6 Shoveler and 2 Goosander were perhaps the product of cold weather movement.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow and Marsh Harrier remain.

Cetti’s Warbler and Marsh Harrier!

6th December 2023 – bright and frosty E1/3
Grounded Migrants
A Cetti’s Warbler was newly arrived. Grounded thrushes involved 6 Redwing while 2 Goldcrest were perhaps attempting to overwinter.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 22 Pink-footed Goose, 2 Siskin and a Lesser Redpoll flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Five Woodcock flew in to roost.
Miscellaneous
The two Hooded Crow and long-staying Marsh Harrier remain.
