8th July 2013 – hot and sunny E1
Offshore
Early morning observations (0700-0840) produced 32 Common Scoter, 20 Gannet, 10 Sandwich Tern, 6 Common Tern, 3 Kittiwake and single Arctic Skua and Red-throated Diver.
Diurnal Migration
A large movement of Sand Martin was noted with 170 birds logged. Also seen were 50 Swallow, 10 House Martin and 7 Swift.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 7 Common Sandpiper and 2 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
A Raven was the best of the rest.
Moths
Recently emerged residents included: Small Dotted Buff, Common Footman, Dark Fruit Tree Tortrix and Rose Tortrix.
Hints of movement
7th July 2013 – overcast/calm
Offshore
Despite the calm conditions small groups of Manx Shearwater were close inshore early morning with 53 birds logged. Also seen were 11 Common Scoter and smaller numbers of Gannet, Sandwich Tern and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Three juvenile Stonechat were good to see following the recent population crash although probably post-breeding dispersal rather than true migration.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 15 Swift flew through.

A Map-winged Swift was unusual and recently emerged residents include: Small Fan-footed Wave, Single-dotted Wave, Riband Wave, Barred Straw, Archer’s Dart and Rustic.

Waders included a flock of 140 Knot – all in non-breeding plumage.

The first young Swallow have now fledged - rather later than usual.

Mid-morning observations produced 70 Manx Shearwater, 30 Common Scoter, 25 Gannet, 13 Kittiwake, 3 Guillemot, 2 Arctic Skua and a Great Skua.

An early returning Chiffchaff was logged.
Diurnal Migration
A trickle of Swift was noted.

An excellent ringing total for the month involved 139 birds of 11 species with a steady arrival of post-breeding Starling leading the way. Individual species totals were as follows: Starling (92), Greenfinch (14), Goldfinch (10), Sedge Warbler (9), House Sparrow (4), Whitethroat (3), Lapwing (2), Reed Bunting (2), Wllow Warbler (1), Chiffchaff (1) and Magpie (1).

Morning observations over a calm sea provided just small numbers of Gannet, Common Scoter, Sandwich Tern and Guillemot.
Wildfowl and Waders
An early returning Green Sandpiper proved to be the bird of the day while other waders included a single Whimbrel.
Moths
Newly emerged species included Burnished Brass and a varied selection of micros including Cochylis atricapitana, Esperia sulphurella, Marbled Orchard Tortrix, Epiblema roborana, Scoparia pyralella and Phlyctaenia coronata.

Morning observations over a calm sea provided just small numbers of Gannet, Common Scoter, Sandwich Tern and Guillemot.

An early returning Green Sandpiper proved to be the bird of the day while other waders included a single Whimbrel.

A quieter day over the sea with observations (0800-0900) producing just 12 Gannet, 12 Guillemot, 10 Little Tern and 2 Manx Shearwater.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 200 Knot, 140 Sanderling, 35 Bar-tailed Godwit and a Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
Just when it seemed that the long-staying Hooded Crow had finally moved on it put in another appearance.
Moths
Immigrants were limited to a few Silver Y while recently emerged residents included Buff Ermine, Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Grey Dagger, Ghost Moth, Sand Dart, Oblique Carpet, Pale-shouldered Brocade and Yellow Shell.
