Offshore
Only small numbers of Gannet and Sandwich Tern were offshore.
Grounded Migrants
A small fall produced 4 Pied Flycatcher along with 10 Willow Warbler, 6 Robin, 3 Whitethroat and single Whinchat, Reed Warbler, Goldcrest and Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Hirundines were on the move with 400 Swallow and 10 Sand Martin logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 6 Greenshank, 2 Ruff, 2 Whimbrel and single Green Sandpiper and Wood Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin was the best of the rest.
Ringing
A very poor month on the ringing front with the total of 79 birds of 17 species one of the worst August totals recorded in 50 years. A pitiful number of warbler species were trapped – a reflection of current trends! Individual species totals (retraps in brackets) were as follows: House Sparrow 33, Willow Warbler 10, Goldfinch 5 (1), Robin 4, Blackbird 4, Swallow 3, Wren 3, Linnet 3, Whitethroat 2, Goldcrest 2, Dunnock 2, Greenfinch 2, Blackcap 1, Pied Flycatcher 1, Meadow Pipit 1, Pied Wagtail 1 and Tree Sparrow 1.
Founded in 1964, the work of Walney Bird Observatory is funded entirely by membership subscription. Since 1965 it has been an accredited member of the British Trust for Ornithology’s bird observatories network which operates across Britain and Ireland. Bird Observatories are at the forefront of conservation, monitoring bird populations through the medium of census work, daily recording of migrants and ringing.

30th August 2015 – sunny spells S1
Offshore
A calm sea provided 125 Sandwich Tern, 55 Common Scoter and small numbers of Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
A few more birds were in evidence than of late with 14 Robin, 4 Willow Warbler, 3 Goldcrest, 3 Whitethroat and single Sedge Warbler and Wheatear logged.
Diurnal Migration
A light passage was noted with 150 Swallow, 10 Meadow Pipit, 6 Grey Wagtail, 6 Pied/White Wagtail, 5 Reed Bunting, 3 Sand Martin and 2 Tree Pipit recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 20 Greenshank, 4 Ruff, 4 Whimbrel and a Wood Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
Raptors involved 2 Merlin, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

29th August 2015 – sun and showers SSW4/5
Rarities
A single Cory’s Shearwater showed well as it moved slowly south at 0745.
Offshore
Additional birds seen (0730-0900) involved 300 Common Scoter, 90 Gannet, 35 Sandwich Tern, 14 Manx Shearwater, 5 Kittiwake and single Great Skua, Fulmar and Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
Again little evidence of any newly grounded birds with just single Whitethroat and Willow Warbler logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 200 Ringed Plover, 110 Sanderling, 82 Grey Plover, 50 Knot, 22 Greenshank, 12 Black-tailed Godwit and single Common Sandpiper and Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
At least 9 Little Egret were seen.

A single Cory’s Shearwater showed well as it moved slowly south at 0745.

A Whinchat was amongst 6 Stonechat and 3 Wheatear.

Waders included 3 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Greenshank and a Common Sandpiper.

A few Swallow and Sand Martin were in evidence.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wigeon and Teal numbers begin to build and waders included 10 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.

A gathering of 14 Little Egret were logged.
Moths
A Campion was amongst a small moth catch.

Citrine Wagtail
22nd August 2015 – overcast/showers then rain SE1
Rarities
Autumn finally burst into life when a juvenile Citrine Wagtail was found early morning. The bird showed well and called frequently between 0730 and 0740 before flying low north. Despite searching the bird could not be relocated.
Offshore
The sea provided 60 Common Scoter and small numbers of Gannet and Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Despite the early morning excitement only 15 Wheatear were seen along with 3 Willow Warbler, 3 Robin and single Sedge Warbler and Whitethroat.
Diurnal Migration
There was some evidence of movement with 66 House Martin, 50 Swallow, 12 Sand Martin and 3 Swift recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included Greenshank and Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
Raptors included Merlin, Peregrine and Sparrowhawk.

Waders included 240 Turnstone, 14 Greenshank, 2 Ruff and single Black-tailed Godwit and Whimbrel.

18th August 2015 – bright and sunny start/cloud late WNW2/3
Offshore
An evening watch on the falling tide produced 30 Sandwich Tern, 10 Gannet and a dark phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
Again very limited fare with just 3 Wheatear, 2 Whitethroat and single Whinchat and Willow Warbler logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 4 Whimbrel and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Little Egret remain prominent.
Moths
Rosy Rustic, Six stripe Rustic and Hedge Rustic are all newly emerged.
