Excellent ringing year draws to a close

31st December 2014 – overcast/rain later SSE3/4
Offshore
An early morning check over the sea produced 14 Common Scoter, 6 Red-throated Diver, 5 Shag and a Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
The overwintering Chiffchaff remains in residence.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Long-tailed Duck continues to linger amongst 32 Goldeneye. Waders included 8 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit,
Miscellaneous
Additional sightings included 40 Twite.
Ringing
As usual a quiet end to the year saw just 83 birds of 9 species handled. Individual totals were as follows (recaptures in brackets). Goldfinch 4 (39), Blackbird 3 (11), Chaffinch 2, Reed Bunting 2 (2), Robin 1 (5), House Sparrow 1 (5), Song Thrush 1 (1), Chiffchaff 1 (1), Dunnock (4). However, the year saw an above average 3364 birds of 46 species ringed – a total only surpassed by the 3463 of 50 species ringed in 2011.

Further Shag influx

29th December 2014 – bright and sunny, early frost/calm
Offshore
Another dawn check over the calm sea revealed a flock of 30 Shag along with a Great Northern Diver and 6 Common Scoter.
Grounded Migrants
A few Redwing and Fieldfare were further evidence of small scale cold weather movement.
Diurnal Migration
A further 140 Pink-footed Geese headed north.
Miscellaneous
Additional sightings included 200 Twite, 2 Raven, 2 Water Rail and a Little Owl.

Shag influx

27th December 2014 – overcast/showers/calm
Offshore
A dawn check over a calm sea revealed a gathering of 27 Shag, 5 Red-throated Diver and a huge raft of 5400 Eider.
Grounded Migrants
Two Redwing provided further evidence of cold weather movement.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 6 Whooper Swan headed south.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Long-tailed Duck and 42 Barnacle Geese remain. Waders included 3000 Knot and 4 Purple Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
Additional sightings included 9 Twite and a Merlin. At least 8 Tree Sparrow continue to winter.

Pink-footed Geese head back north!

26th December 2014 – overcast/showers S1/2
Offshore
A check of the sea revealed 15 Shag along with 16 Common Scoter and 10 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A hint of cold weather movement saw an increase in the Blackbird population along with 23 Redwing, 2 Fieldfare and a Mistle Thrush.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 600 Pink-footed Geese headed north in four flocks.
Wildfowl and Waders
The 42 Barnacle Goose flock remain and 154 pale-bellied Brent Geese were logged. The female Long-tailed Duck continues in residence amongst 26 Goldeneye. Waders included 4 Greenshank and single Woodcock and Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
Additional sightings included 3 Raven and a Water Rail.

Brent Geese continue to build

24th December 2014 – bright and sunny W6
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 173 pale-bellied birds and waders included 33 Purple Sandpiper.
Miscellaneous
A total of 51 Little Egret gathered along the eastern shore.
Ringing
At least 4 colour-ringed birds were amongst the Brent Goose flock.

Slavonian Grebe and Kemp's Ridley Turtle

21st December 2014 – overcast with showers SW/6
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea (0900-1000) revealed 11 Shag, 11 Common Scoter, 7 Kittiwake and single Red-throated Diver and Razorbill. A Slavonian Grebe joined the Great Northern Diver in the relatively sheltered waters along the eastern shore.
Grounded Migrants
A few Redwing were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The 42 Barnacle Geese remain in residence along with the Long-tailed Duck and 159 pale-bellied Brent Geese. Waders included 4000 Knot and 7 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 51 Little Egret remain and 14 Tree Sparrows continue to winter.
Reptiles
A Kemp’s Ridley Turtle, which is critically endangered and the rarest sea turtle in the world, was found washed up on the island. It usually occurs around the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and The Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of the USA. Around 30 Kemp's Ridley Turtles had been stranded on British and Irish beaches in the past, though the majority were recorded in the South West and Wales.

Great Northern Diver

20th December 2014 – sunshine and showers WNW5/6
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea (0900-1000) revealed just 6 Kittiwake and 3 Common Scoter. However, a check of the eastern shore at high tide revealed that the Great Northern Diver was still present.
Wildfowl and Waders
The 42 Barnacle Geese remain in residence along with the Long-tailed Duck and 78 pale-bellied Brent Geese. Two Whooper Swan called in and waders included 2500 Knot and 7 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
The overwintering Chiffchaff remained and 20 Twite were logged .
Ringing
The Brent Goose flock contained at least four colour-ringed birds.

A check of the sea revealed just a handful of Kittiwake.
Wildfowl and Waders
The 42 Barnacle Geese remain in residence along with the Long-tailed Duck. Waders included 6 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
A Chiffchaff appears to be overwintering and 14 Twite were logged .
Ringing
The Barnacle Goose flock contained a bird previously ringed at Caerlaverock on the Solway Firth.

Winter fare

The Great Northern Diver remains while 18 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Red-throated Diver, 4 Common Scoter, 4 Shag and a Kittiwake were also logged.
Grounded Migrants
A handful of Redwing were newly arrived.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 235 Pink-footed Geese headed north in two flocks.
Wildfowl and Waders
The 42 Barnacle Goose flock remain and 80 dark-bellied Brent Geese were logged while at least one Long-tailed Duck remains in residence. Waders included Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow put in another appearance, the Twite flock again held 200 birds and unusually at least 10 Tree Sparrow are wintering on the island.
Ringing
The Brent Goose flock held at least two colour-ringed birds.

12th December 2014 – sunny spells W5/6

The Great Northern Diver remains along the eastern shore.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Barnacle Goose flock has increased to 42 birds and 18 pale-bellied Brent Geese were logged while the 2 Long-tailed Duck remain in residence.
Miscellaneous
At least 51 Little Egret gathered in a pre roost flock and 2 Peregrine were logged.
Ringing
The Barnacle Goose flock now holds 7 colour-ringed birds – details of which are awaited.

Pochard finally makes year list!

7th December 2014 – sunshine and showers W5/6
Offshore
Early morning sightings (0815-0915) produced 11 Red-throated Diver, 10 Common Scoter, 5 Pochard, 3 Razorbill and a Gannet. Later in the day a Great Northern Diver sheltered off the eastern shore.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 170 pale-bellied birds and waders included 1200 Golden Plover.
Miscellaneous
A group of 40 Twite and a Raven were the best of the rest.

Little Auk and Pomarine Skua

6th December 2014 – overcast/light showers SE3 then SW3/4
Offshore
High tide observations revealed a juvenile Pomarine Skua chasing Herring Gulls and 3 Shag while the falling tide (1245-1445) added a Little Auk amongst 86 Kittiwake, 55 Razorbill, 45 Common Scoter, 15 Red-throated Diver and 12 Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
Newly grounded birds, perhaps a hint of cold weather movement, involved 3 Song Thrush and a Robin.
Wildfowl and Waders
Both Long-tailed Duck put in an appearance and the 37 Barnacle Geese remain. The Brent Goose flock held 144 pale-bellied birds and waders included 3000 Knot, 260 Sanderling, 8 Greenshank and 2 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A pre-roost gathering of 71 Little Egret was noted and 200 Twite were logged. Additional sightings included 2 Water Rail along with Merlin, Peregrine, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

Eiders galore

30th November 2014 – bright and sunny N1/2
Offshore
Early morning observations (0830-0900) produced 9 Common Scoter, 8 Razorbill, 7 Shag, 4 Red-throated Diver and a late Gannet. Later observations over the mouth of Morecambe Bay at low tide added flocks of 5800 Eider, 100 Common Scoter and 70 Great Crested Grebe along with 12 Red-breasted Merganser, 4 Red-throated Diver and 3 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
The Chiffchaff remains and 2 Fieldfare and a Redwing were also logged.
Diurnal Migration
A light passage produced 30 Pink-footed Geese, 6 Carrion Crow, 4 Tree Sparrow and a Pied Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
Geese were prominent with 154 pale-bellied Brent Goose, 72 dark-bellied Brent Goose and 37 Barnacle Goose recorded. Waders included 4 Jack Snipe amongst 28 Snipe, 3 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A Little Owl was the best of the rest.

Another good monthly total saw 311 birds of 18 species handled. Individual totals were as follows (retraps in brackets): Tree Sparrow 94 (1), Goldfinch 39 (38), Blackbird 35 (4), Wren 19 (1), Chaffinch 17 (1), Goldcrest 9, Lesser Redpoll 4, Dunnock 4 (7), Greenfinch 4 (7), Song Thrush 4, Reed Bunting (4), House Sparrow 3 (5), Robin 1 (5), Stonechat 1, Fieldfare 1, Mistle Thrush 1, Red-eyed Vireo 1 and Blue Tit (1) .

Early morning observations over a calm sea (0830-0900) produced 16 Shag, 16 Common Scoter, 5 Razorbill and 2 Red-throated Diver.

Early morning thrushes involved a sprinkling of Fieldfare, Redwing and Blackbird while 2 Goldcrest were also logged.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 17 Tree Sparrow and a single Yellowhammer were recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Long-tailed Duck remains in residence and waders included 100 Sanderling and 16 Greenshank.

A late Chiffchaff

22nd November 2014 – early rain the sunny S3/4

A check of the sea (0830-0900) produced small numbers of Common Scoter, Razorbill, Guillemot and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
A late Chiffchaff and 3 Tree Sparrow were the sole evidence of newly arrived birds.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 117 pale-bellied birds and the female Long-tailed Duck remains. Waders included 3000 Knot, 14 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A total of 39 Little Egret were logged and additional sightings included 100 Twite and 14 Rock Pipit.
Ringing
The Twite flock held a Heysham ringed bird.

Brace of Long-tailed Ducks

21st November 2014 – overcast then rain SE3/4/5

A loose flock of 14 Shag fed off the western shore.
Grounded Migrants
The exceptional autumn for Tree Sparrow continued with a further five birds logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
There are now 2 Long-tailed Duck amongst 14 Goldeneye and 10 Red-breasted Merganser. A Greenshank was the pick of the waders

At least 61 Little Egret remain and additional sightings included 45 Twite and 2 Raven.

Osprey moves through as autumn passage continues

16th November 2014 – sunny spells NE/2/1
Offshore
A quick check of the sea revealed little other than 3 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 2 Redwing amongst a sprinkling of Song Thrush and Blackbirds and two Goldcrest were also logged.
Diurnal Migration
Another varied selection was highlighted by an Osprey which headed east at 1100hrs and 7 Snow Bunting. Additional sightings included 375 Pink-footed Goose, 205 Starling, 185 Jackdaw, 50 Tree Sparrow, 19 Carrion Crow, 8 Skylark, 5 Meadow Pipit, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 2 Pied Wagtail and single Siskin, Rock Pipit, Rook and Raven.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 73 pale-bellied and 47 dark-bellied birds, also seen were 37 Barnacle Geese and the long-staying female Long-tailed Duck along with 2 Gadwall. Waders included 9 Greenshank.

A group of 5 Shag were the pick of the sightings.

Overnight migrants were at a premium with 4 Blackbird, 2 Goldcrest and a Song Thrush logged.
Diurnal Migration
A fair sprinkling of movement was noted for mid-November with 105 Pink-footed Goose, 45 Tree Sparrow, 30 Jackdaw, 22 Starling, 10 Chaffinch, 9 Carrion Crow, 7 Rook, 7 Meadow Pipit, 4 Whooper Swan, 3 Lesser Redpoll and single Pied Wagtail and Grey Wagtail recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Long-tailed Duck remains amongst 15 Goldeneye and waders included 8 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 4 Water Rail were logged and a Merlin was in residence.

A late Sandwich Tern was seen.

Mediterranean Gull

8th November 2014 – overcast/rain soon

The sea (0800-0900) provided just 9 Common Scoter, 5 Red-throated Diver and 2 Kittiwake. Later observations added single Shag and Mediterranean Gull and a further 10 Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
A couple of Goldcrest provided the sole evidence.
Diurnal Migration
Sightings were dominated by 555 Fieldfare with little else of note.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 80 pale-bellied Brent Geese and the long-staying Long-tailed Duck.

Hooded Crow

6th November 2014 – overcast/rain SSE5/6
Grounded Migrants
A handful of Redwing, Song Thrush and Blackbird were all that was evident.
Diurnal Migration
A Stock Dove and 13 Whooper Swan moved through before the rain set in.

The Long-tailed Duck is still in residence and 75 pale-bellied Brent Goose, 22 Barnacle Goose and 3 dark-bellied Brent Goose were also logged. Waders included 11 Greenshank and a Black-tailed Godwit.

The long-staying Hooded Crow remains and several small flocks of Twite were present along the eastern shore.
Ringing
The flock of Barnacle Goose held 6 colour-ringed birds and a further 3 metal ringed birds.

Snow Bunting

5th November 2014 – bright and sunny N1/2
Rarities
Light winds and clear skies saw the North West of England’s first Red-eyed Vireo induced to move on overnight, but not before around 70 fortunate observers managed to connect with the bird yesterday.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning grounded thrushes included: 57 Blackbird, 38 Redwing, 24 Fieldfare, 10 Song Thrush and a Mistle Thrush Also seen were 4 Goldcrest and Stonechat were prominent with 9 birds logged.
Diurnal Migration
Another good November passage produced totals of 1200 Jackdaw, 150 Starling, 60 Redwing, 60 Tree Sparrow, 49 Pink-footed Goose, 40 Carrion Crow, 31 Woodpigeon, 24 Whooper Swan, 11 Skylark, 11 Fieldfare, 7 Mistle Thrush, 3 Stock Dove and single Brambling, Swallow, Lesser Redpoll and Snow Bunting.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Long-tailed Duck remains and the Barnacle Goose flock held 19 birds. Waders included 10 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 60 Little Egret continue to roam the eastern saltmarshes and additional sightings included 2 Water Rail, 116 Twite, Merlin and Peregrine.

MEGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4th November 2014 – bright and sunny E1/2
Rarities
The morning started well with a Yellow-browed Warbler – the 8th of the autumn at Snab Point. However, this was quickly eclipsed when a Red-eyed Vireo was found in the observatory garden where it remained until 1600hrs – Walney Island strikes with yet another first for Cumbria.
Grounded Migrants
At least one Black Redstart continues to linger and small numbers of grounded Fieldfare, Redwing, Song Thrush and Blackbird were logged along with 5 Goldcrest and a Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Birds were again on the move with totals including: 460 Starling, 400 Jackdaw, 40 Redwing, 50 Whooper Swan, 24 Pink-footed Geese, 24 Skylark, 10 Tree Sparrow, 6 Meadow Pipit, 5 Siskin, 5 Chaffinch, 3 Twite, 2 Reed Bunting, 2 Stock Dove and single Brambling, Mistle Thrush and Lesser Redpoll, although understandably diurnal migration went under recorded through the morning.

Early morning grounded thrushes were limited to 7 Fieldfare and 3 Redwing, the late Wheatear remained and 70 Twite were logged.

Only light passage today with 60 Jackdaw, 60 Starling, 4 Whooper Swan and 3 Lesser Redpoll logged.

Wildfowl included a female Long-tailed Duck and 22 Barnacle Geese while 16 Greenshank and a Woodcock were the pick of the waders.

The Twite flock held a colour-ringed bird from Macrihannish, Scotland.

1st November 2014 – sunshine at showers SW4/5
Grounded Migrants
Early morning grounded thrushes included: 24 Redwing, 10 Song Thrush and 10 Blackbird Also seen were a late Wheatear and a Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Passage today included; 730 Jackdaw, 528 Fieldfare, 280 Starling, 54 Redwing and 15 Tree Sparrow.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 22 Barnacle Geese and 30 pale-bellied Brent Geese.
Miscellaneous
Additional sightings included Water Rail and the long-staying Hooded Crow.

Fieldfares arrive en massse

31st October 2014 – hazy sun SSE4
Grounded Migrants
At least one Black Redstart continues to linger and further smatterings of grounded Redwing, Song Thrush and Blackbird were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Birds were again on the move with totals including: 1020 Jackdaw, 685 Starling, 680 Fieldfare, 150 Woodpigeon, 90 Redwing, 12 Carrion Crow, 10 Chaffinch, 8 Whooper Swan, 6 Stock Dove and 2 Swallow.

The female Long-tailed Duck remains and 22 Barnacle Geese were logged. Waders included 11 Greenshank.

Ringing
Another excellent months ringing saw the 3,000th bird of the year ringed with the total boosted by record numbers of Tree Sparrow. A total of 834 birds of 23 species were handled during the month and individual species totals were as follows (retraps in brackets): Tree Sparrow 221, Chaffinch 95, Blackbird 54 (3), House Sparrow 52 (7), Wren 52, Robin 48 (4), Goldfinch 41 (104), Song Thrush 26, Greenfinch 20 (2), Meadow Pipit 19, Goldcrest 18, Dunnock 18 (5), Blackcap 12, Redwing 10, Sparrow hawk 3, Blue Tit 3 (4), Yellow-browed Warbler 2, Chiffchaff 2, Reed Bunting 2 (3), Treecreeper 1, Magpie 1, Stonechat 1 and Lesser Redpoll 1.

Black Redstart doubles up

There are now 2 Black Redstarts on the island but other than a further smattering of Redwing, Song Thrush and Blackbird obviously newly grounded birds only involved 3 Goldcrest and 2 Blackcap.

A lighter passage today with 40 Starling, 21 Pied/White Wagtail, 14 Chaffinch, 14 Jackdaw, 9 Tree Sparrow, 5 Siskin and 2 Whooper Swan logged.

The female Long-tailed Duck remains and waders included 12 Greenshank.

Black Redstart remains

The first calm day for a while produced a good variety through the morning with 1610 Pink-footed Goose, 780 Starling, 440 Jackdaw, 175 Linnet, 165 Meadow Pipit, 105 Tree Sparrow, 80 Skylark, 69 Whooper Swan, 30 Chaffinch, 26 Twite, 24 Carrion Crow, 15 Pied/White Wagtail,12 Siskin, 10 Greenfinch, 10 Reed Bunting, 8 Stock Dove, 2 Rock Pipit and single Yellowhammer and Swallow logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Long-tailed Duck remains and 21 Barnacle Geese were recorded. Waders included 14 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Additional sightings included a scattering of Little Egret, 4 Water Rail, Merlin, Peregrine and the long-staying Hooded Crow.

Black Redstart

Observations over the sea (0815-0900) produced 18 Common Scoter, 13 Razorbill, 8 Guillemot, 4 Kittiwake and single Shag and Red-throated Diver .
Grounded Migrants
A Black Redstart was the shining light on a gloomy day. Otherwise newly grounded birds were limited to small numbers of Goldcrest, Redwing and Song Thrush.
Diurnal Migration
Slightly more movement than of late with 115 Jackdaw, 23 Skylark, 22 Greenfnich, 2 Raven and single Rock Pipit and Mistle Thrush logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Long-tailed Duck remains and waders included 3 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Additional sightings included Merlin and Sparrowhawk.

26th October 2014 – overcast/showers SW6/7
Offshore
A check over the sea on the rising tide (0935-1035) revealed 30 Kittiwake, 12 Razorbill, 2 Common Scoter, 2 Shag and a Gannet.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Long-tailed Duck remains and the Brent Goose flock held 69 pale-bellied birds. Waders included 13 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Additional sighting included a flock of 9 Twite.

Pomarine Skua

25th October 2014 – overcast SW5/6
Offshore
Observations over the sea (1015-1115) were led by a Pomarine Skua and Arctic Skua along with 29 Razorbill, 24 Kittiwake, 18 Common Scoter, 3 Guillemot, 2 Gannet and a Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A few Goldcrest provided the only evidence of movement.
Diurnal Migration
Two Grey Wagtail moved through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The female Long-tailed Duck remains, the Brent Goose flock held 69 pale-bellied and 11 dark-bellied birds and waders included 10 Greenshank.

Cetti’s Warbler and Bearded Tit remain

23rd October 2014 – sunny spells SW3
Rarities
The Cetti’s Warbler remains although it is now extremely elusive, in addition the male Bearded Tit also continues to tour the island’s reed beds.
Offshore
Generally quiet over the sea although a group of 12 Shag were recorded.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 10 Blackbird, 4 Song Thrush, 2 Redwing and a Fieldfare. Otherwise there were 3 newly arrived Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
A light passage was evident as the winds continue to abate. Totals included 30 Tree Sparrow, 22 Greenfinch, 21 Meadow Pipit, 14 Skylark, 10 Chaffinch, 9 Linnet, 8 Reed Bunting, 6 Whooper Swan, 5 Pied/White Wagtail and single Twite, Lesser Redpoll, Grey Wagtail and Rock Pipit.

Waders included 8 Greenshank.

Leach’s Petrel at last!

23rd October 2014 – overcast rain at times SW3/4
Offshore
The winds finally swung back to the southwest and the anticipated Leach’s Petrel of the last few days finally arrived with 2 birds logged. Also seen were an Arctic Skua, 20 Razorbill, 10 Common Scoter, 8 Guillemot, 7 Shag and single Gannet and Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 2 Song Thrush and a Redwing. Otherwise there were 4 Goldcrest newly arrived.
Diurnal Migration
Small numbers of Linnet, Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Reed Bunting and Chaffinch were recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 5 dark-bellied birds and additional sightings involved 11 Pintail and 4 Shoveler. Waders included 4 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Additional sightings included Water Rail, Merlin and 86 Little Egret.

Long-tailed Duck new in

22nd October 2014 – overcast then rain WSW4
Offshore
Observations on the rising tide (0930-1030) produced 225 Razorbill, 117 Kittiwake, 40 Guillemot, 8 Gannet, 8 Common Scoter, 5 Shag, 4 Red-throated Diver and 3 Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes 4 Song Thrush and single Redwing and Mistle Thrush.
Diurnal Migration
Small groups of Skylark, Meadow Pipit and Pied/White Wagtail were noted heading out over the sea with a Merlin in attendance.
Wildfowl and Waders
A female Long-tailed Duck was newly arrived, the Brent Goose flock held 10 dark-bellied and 2 pale-bellied birds and waders included 7 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Little Egret numbers continue to build with a record 88 birds now present along the eastern side of the island. A Water Rail was the best of the rest.

Black Guillemot

20th October 2014 – rain then showers SW4/5
Offshore
Observations on the falling tide (1030-1200) produced little reward with just 29 Common Scoter, 16 Razorbill, 6 Kittiwake, 5 Guillemot, 4 Gannet and 3 Shag recorded. However, a later check added a Black Guillemot.
Diurnal Migration
A hint of movement between the showers with 20 Linnet and a Grey Wagtail logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 14 Greenshank.
Mammals
At least 4 Harbour Porpoise were offshore.

Seawatching to the fore

19th October 2014 – bright and sunny SW6/7
Offshore
Observations through the morning (0745-1045) were led by a juvenile Pomarine Skua amongst 205 Razorbill, 131 Gannet, 49 Common Scoter, 30 Kittiwake, 2 Guillemot and single Arctic Tern and Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
A Fieldfare was the sole record.
Miscellaneous
A total of 58 Little Egret and a Water Rail were the best of the rest.

First Woodcock of the autumn

Rarities
The male Bearded Tit continues to tour the island’s reed beds.

A check over the sea on the rising tide (0800-0900) revealed 71 Gannet, 44 Kittiwake, 29 Common Scoter, 20 Razorbill and 6 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Newly grounded birds were few but included 6 Redwing and 3 Goldcrest.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 19 Greenshank and single Ruff and Woodcock.
Miscellaneous
Additional sighting included 27 Twite, 2 Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Water Rail.
Moths
A Silver Y was all the moth trap could muster.

Cetti's Warbler and Bearded Tit

17th October 2014 – sunny spells SSE3/4
Rarities
Walney’s and Cumbria’s third Cetti’s Warbler remains in the central marsh at South Walney although it remains elusive. South Walney Nature Reserve opens at 1000hrs, follow all on site instructions. The male Bearded Tit also continues to linger, though mobile.
Offshore
Observations (0745-0845) produced 41 Common Scoter, 37 Gannet, 14 Razorbill, 4 Shag and a Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 25 Redwing, 10 Blackbird and 4 Song Thrush. Otherwise there were 3 Goldcrest and a Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Limited to 35 Linnet, 11 Meadow Pipit, 10 Chaffinch, 5 Pied/White Wagtail, 2 Grey Wagtail and a Mistle Thrush.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 51 pale-bellied and 47 dark-bellied birds.

More Yellow-browed Warblers!

16th October 2014 – early drizzle then sunny spells E1/2
Rarities
Walney’s and Cumbria’s third Cetti’s Warbler remains in the central marsh at South Walney although it remains elusive. South Walney Nature Reserve opens at 1000hrs, follow all on site instructions. Also on the island today 2 Yellow-browed Warbler – making seven for the autumn so far, along with a male Bearded Tit and Ring Ouzel.
Offshore
A few Gannet were all that was logged.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 50 Redwing, 30 Blackbird and 3 Song Thrush. Otherwise there were 17 Stonechat, 3 Goldcrest and 2 Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
The early morning drizzle dampened diurnal passage, although single Osprey and Marsh Harrier were logged the supporting cast involved just 145 Pink-footed Goose, 102 Starling, 21 Pied/White Wagtail, 20 Meadow Pipit, 6 Greenfinch, 3 Rock Pipit and a Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first Goldeneye of the autumn arrived and waders included 10 Greenshank.

Additional sightings included 4 Water Rail, Merlin and 9 Little Egret.

The Bearded Tit sported a fine set of colour rings suggesting its origin was from across the border at Leighton Moss.

Early morning thrushes involved 25 Redwing, and 27 Blackbird. Otherwise there was a Wheatear amongst 14 Stonechat and 2 Goldcrest and 2 Chiffchaff were amongst a further smattering of Robin.
Diurnal Migration
Passage totals through the morning involved 400 Jackdaw, 315 Pink-footed Goose, 140 Linnet, 105 Starling, 100 Meadow Pipit, 14 Pied/White Wagtail, 6 Carrion Crow, 5 Reed Bunting and 4 Rock Pipit.

Waders included 14 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
A juvenile Marsh Harrier hunted the island throughout the morning, a record 64 Little Egret were logged and additional sightings included 2 Water Rail, 2 Merlin and Little Owl.

Passage totals through the morning involved 1850 Jackdaw, 450 Pink-footed Goose, 140 Tree Sparrow, 40 Meadow Pipit, 20 Linnet, 18 Carrion Crow, 15 Whooper Swan, 10 Pied/White Wagtail, 10 Chaffinch, 9 Lesser Redpoll, 8 Twite, 2 Reed Bunting, 2 Rock Pipit and a single Grey Wagtail.

Tree Sparrow invasion

13th October 2014 – sunny spells NE4/5/6

Walney’s and Cumbria’s third Cetti’s Warbler continues to reside in the central marsh at South Walney although more elusive than of late. South Walney Nature Reserve opens at 1000hrs, follow all on site instructions.

A check over the sea on the rising tide (1130-1230) revealed 30 Razorbill, 6 Gannet, 2 Shag and a Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
The only obvious new arrivals were 3 Wheatear, 2 Goldcrest and a Blackcap amongst a smattering of Robin.
Diurnal Migration
An exceptional passage of Tree Sparrow saw 230 birds logged, additional sightings included 800 Jackdaw, 360 Chaffinch, 240 Pink-footed Goose, 120 Meadow Pipit, 110 Linnet, 34 Greenfinch, 31 Starling, 30 Carrion Crow, 30 Skylark, 10 Pied/White Wagtail, 9 Barnacle Goose, 2 Rook, 2 Swallow and a Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
At least 9 Greenshank remain.
Miscellaneous
A post-roost gathering of 51 Little Egret was recorded, also seen were 2 Water Rail and a Merlin.

A November Moth would appear to be the first island record.

Stonechat remained prominent with 11 birds logged, also seen were 6 Goldcrest, 6 Song Thrush, 2 Wheatear and a Chiffchaff.

Passage was again evident as the fog cleared, morning totals included: 1180 Pink-footed Goose, 170 Starling, 85 Meadow Pipit, 28 Barnacle Goose, 24 Pied/White Wagtail, 34 Skylark, 20 Linnet, 20 Greenfinch, 11 Jackdaw, 10 Chaffinch, 6 Whooper Swan, 4 Reed Bunting, 2 Swallow and single House Martin and Grey Wagtail.

Waders included 18 Greenshank and single Ruff and Spotted Redshank.

Observations over the sea (0800-0900) produced 30 Razorbill, 11 Common Scoter, 5 Gannet and a Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
An influx of Stonechat was evident with 12 birds logged. Also seen were 7 Goldcrest, 5 Blackcap, 2 Wheatear and a single Chiffchaff
Diurnal Migration
Passage was again evident, morning totals included: 660 Meadow Pipit, 400 Linnet, 170 Skylark, 70 Chaffinch, 60 Starling, 52 Pied/White Wagtail, 51 Jackdaw, 22 Tree Sparrow, 20 Reed Bunting, 8 Carrion Crow, 5 Whooper Swan, 2 Grey Wagtail and a Siskin.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 18 Greenshank and single Ruff and Spotted Redshank.
Miscellaneous
A total of 17 Little Egret were recorded, at least 3 Sparrowhawk and 2 Merlin were seen, 2 Water Rail were heard and single Short-eared Owl and Barn Owl were recorded early morning.

Checking Cormorants for colour rings again proved productive a further two individuals identified.

The Brent Goose flock has increased to 33 pale-bellied birds and waders included 21 Greenshank and single Ruff and Spotted Redshank amongst 1100 Redshank.

Checking Cormorants for colour rings again proved productive with individuals sporting white, green, red and yellow darvic rings all seen – reading the individual codes however proved less easy!.

Observations over the sea (0800-0900)produced 300 Razorbill, 42 Common Scoter, 18 Gannet, 3 Guillemot and 2 Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Three Goldcrest and a Chiffchaff was all that was on offer.
Diurnal Migration
Much quieter than yesterday with just 120 Meadow Pipit, 90 Linnet, 14 Pied/White Wagtail, 12 Skylark and 3 Swallow logged.

Four Barnacle Geese were seen and waders included 20 Greenshank and a Spotted Redshank amongst 1090 Redshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 3 Water Rail, 2 Merlin, 2 Raven and a second-winter Mediterranean Gull were the best of the rest.

Walney’s and Cumbria’s third Cettis’ Warbler was calling and showing occasionally mid-afternoon in the central marsh at South Walney. South Walney Nature Reserve opens at 1000hrs, follow all on site instructions.

An early morning check over the sea revealed a feeding flock of 20 Gannet, 18 Common Scoter and a Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Although there was a influx of Robin and Dunnock the only other warbler logged was a solitary Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
A migration spectacular was underway throughout the morning, totals included: 5400 Meadow Pipit, 2085 Linnet, 1265 Skylark, 495 Pied Wagtail, 345 Pink-footed Goose, 105 Chaffinch, 68 Jackdaw, 50 Reed Bunting, 33 Carrion Crow, 32 Swallow, 30 Goldfinch, 30 Tree Sparrow, 23 Starling, 14 Greenfinch, 9 Grey Wagtail, 4 Siskin, 2 Little Egret, 2 Collared Dove and single Whooper Swan, Rock Pipit and Brambling.

The Brent Goose flock held 24 pale-bellied birds and waders included 3 Greenshank.

Seabirds to the fore

5th October 2014 – overcast S3/4/5
Offshore
early morning observations over the sea (0730-0900) provided 255 Razorbill, 150 Common Scoter, 90 Gannet. 4 Red-throated Diver, 3 Guillemot, 2 Shag, 2 Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Great Crested Grebe and a dark phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
A Goldcrest was the sole evidence of any newly grounded birds.
Diurnal Migration
Despite the headwind small numbers of birds were venturing out across the sea with 100 Meadow Pipit, 14 Jackdaw, 10 Pied/White Wagtail, 10 Skylark and single Merlin, Kestrel and Grey Wagtail logged.
Ringing
Two further Cormorant were seen with colour rings – initial enquires suggest they were both from colonies on the Isle of Man.
Miscellaneous
A group of 14 Little Egret were logged.

A pod of 8 Harbour Porpoise were offshore.

Brent Geese increase

4th October 2014 – overcast and wet NW3/4/5/6

An early morning check over the sea (07450-0845) produced 206 Common Scoter, 7 Gannet, 3 Razorbill and 2 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
There was little evidence of grounded birds with a few lingering Robin the only species logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 5 dark-bellied and 24 pale-bellied birds.
Miscellaneous
Little Egrets continue to show well along the eastern shore.
Moths
The Satellite was new for the year.

Great Northern Diver and Black Guillemot

3rd October 2014 – overcast S4/5
Offshore
An early morning check over the sea (0730-0900) was highlighted by a Great Northern Diver amongst 230 Common Scoter, 110 Gannet, 50 Razorbill and 6 Red-throated Diver while further checks of the sea through the day added a first-winter Black Guillemot and a first-winter Mediterranean Gull.
Grounded Migrants
There no little evidence of any newly grounded birds with a few lingering Robin the only species logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 5 dark-bellied and 4 pale-bellied birds while waders included 14 Greenshank.
Ringing
Single colour-ringed Little Egret and Cormorant were logged, hopefully details will follow.
Miscellaneous
At least 11 Little Egret were seen and another Mediterranean Gull – this time an adult was recorded while a Merlin was the best of the rest.

An early morning check over the sea provided 30 Gannet, 12 Razorbill, 3 Red-breasted Merganser and single Shag and Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Although 22 Robin were logged newly grounded birds were otherwise at a premium with just 6 Goldcrest, 3 Chiffchaff and a Wheatear recorded.
Diurnal Migration
The skies were alive with birds from dawn to midday with totals including 2400 Meadow Pipit, 1200 Linnet, 400 Skylark, 320 Pied/White Wagtail, 225 Swallow, 180 Pink-footed Goose, 55 Chaffinch, 50 Greenfinch, 50 Reed Bunting, 40 Tree Sparrow, 22 Magpie, 6 Siskin, 3 Grey Wagtail and single Little Egret and Great Spotted Woodpecker.

A Merlin was the best of the rest.

Early morning observations (0730-0900) were highlighted by a drake Velvet Scoter and a Great Skua along with 335 Common Scoter, 240 Razorbill, 18 Gannet, 7 Red-throated Diver, 3 Shag, 2 Guillemot and a Red-breasted Merganser.
Diurnal Migration
Just small numbers of Swallow, Skylark, Grey Wagtail and Meadow Pipit were on the move before the rain arrived.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first 2 Whooper Swan of the autumn appeared and waders included 10 Greenshank.

A Merlin and 2 Raven were the best of the rest.

Record breaking ringing total for September

30th September 2014 – early showers S3/4
Offshore
Early morning observations (0800-0900) produced the best movement for a while with 88 Common Scoter, 68 Razorbill, 34 Gannet, 7 Sandwich Tern, 5 Red-throated Diver and 2 Shag recorded.
Grounded Migrants
Little in evidence on the ground with just 6 Goldcrest the best on offer.
Diurnal Migration
Quieter than of late with just 100 Meadow Pipit, 80 Pied/White Wagtail, 50 Linnet, 30 Skylark, 25 Swallow, 15 Chaffinch,10 Tree Sparrow and 5 Grey Wagtail.
Ringing
The continuously calm, dry and settled month allowed for an above average number of days when mist-nets could be set and exceptional numbers of birds to be ringed. A total of 1286 birds of 26 species were handled, surpassing the previous best of 870 of 28 species in 2011. Individual species totals were as follows (retraps in brackets). Moths and Butterflies
Both Large Wainscot and Green-brindled Crescent were new for the year in the moth trap while butterflies included 10 Red Admiral and a Painted Lady.
