Seabirds to the fore

5th October 2014 – overcast S3/4/5
Offshore
early morning observations over the sea (0730-0900) provided 255 Razorbill, 150 Common Scoter, 90 Gannet. 4 Red-throated Diver, 3 Guillemot, 2 Shag, 2 Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Great Crested Grebe and a dark phase Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
A Goldcrest was the sole evidence of any newly grounded birds.
Diurnal Migration
Despite the headwind small numbers of birds were venturing out across the sea with 100 Meadow Pipit, 14 Jackdaw, 10 Pied/White Wagtail, 10 Skylark and single Merlin, Kestrel and Grey Wagtail logged.
Ringing
Two further Cormorant were seen with colour rings – initial enquires suggest they were both from colonies on the Isle of Man.
Miscellaneous
A group of 14 Little Egret were logged.
Mammals
A pod of 8 Harbour Porpoise were offshore.
