Green Sandpiper

25th June 2013 – sunny spells SW1
Offshore
Morning observations over a calm sea provided just small numbers of Gannet, Common Scoter, Sandwich Tern and Guillemot.
Wildfowl and Waders
An early returning Green Sandpiper proved to be the bird of the day while other waders included a single Whimbrel.
Moths
Newly emerged species included Burnished Brass and a varied selection of micros including Cochylis atricapitana, Esperia sulphurella, Marbled Orchard Tortrix, Epiblema roborana, Scoparia pyralella and Phlyctaenia coronata.

Hooded Crow reappears

24th June 2013 – sunny spells NW4/5
Offshore
A quieter day over the sea with observations (0800-0900) producing just 12 Gannet, 12 Guillemot, 10 Little Tern and 2 Manx Shearwater.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 200 Knot, 140 Sanderling, 35 Bar-tailed Godwit and a Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
Just when it seemed that the long-staying Hooded Crow had finally moved on it put in another appearance.
Moths
Immigrants were limited to a few Silver Y while recently emerged residents included Buff Ermine, Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Grey Dagger, Ghost Moth, Sand Dart, Oblique Carpet, Pale-shouldered Brocade and Yellow Shell.

Velvet Scoter

23rd June 2013 – overcast/rain at times NW5/6/7
Offshore
Observations either side of high tide (0800-1000 & 1200-1300) produced totals of 385 Manx Shearwater, 42 Gannet, 41 Common Scoter, 6 Sandwich Tern, 6 Guillemot, 3 Fulmar, 2 Great Skua and an Arctic Skua.
Wildfowl and Waders
A female Velvet Scoter was the pick of the wildfowl and waders included 1080 Knot, 405 Curlew, 34 Bar-tailed Godwit and 3 Whimbrel.
Breeding Birds
The first Shelducklings have now emerged.

Early signs of autumn

22nd June 2013 – overcast/rain at times S4/5/6
Offshore
Morning observations on the falling tide (1030-1230) produced a varied selection of birds with 455 Manx Shearwater, 61 Gannet, 36 Guillemot, 31 Sandwich Tern, 7 Common Scoter, 3 Arctic Tern, 2 Common Tern, 2 Kittiwake, 2 Razorbill, 2 Great Skua and single Arctic Skua and Little Tern logged.
Grounded Migrants
The first Wheatear of the autumn appeared.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 7 Swift headed south.
Wildfowl and Waders
An early returning drake Wigeon was logged and the 2 Pink-footed Geese remain. Waders included 1750 Oystercatcher, 930 Knot and 260 Bar-tailed Godwit.

Further seabird movement

15th June 2013 – bright and sunny SW4
Offshore
Morning observations on the falling tide (0800-1000) produced 262 Manx Shearwater, 170 Gannet, 48 Guillemot, 19 Sandwich Tern, 18 Kittiwake, 12 Common Scoter, 3 Razorbill, 2 Arctic Tern and single Arctic Skua and Fulmar.
Wildfowl and Waders
A rather late than normal spring passage of Sanderling was noted with 650 birds logged.
Ringing
The Sanderling flock included two colour-ringed birds – details hopefully to follow.
Moths
Newly emerged species include Shoulder – striped Wainscot and Cabbage Moth and a number of micros including Light Brown Apple Moth, Cyclamen Tortrix, Plum Tortrix, Eucosma campoliliana, Elachista argentella, Elachista atricomella and Epiblema cynosbatella.

Seabird movement

12th June 2013 – overcast/drizzle at times SW3
Offshore
Morning observations on the rising tide (1115-1215) produced 28 Gannet, 27 Manx Shearwater, 15 Sandwich Tern, 10 Arctic Tern, 9 Guillemot, 2 Fulmar and single Arctic Skua and Little Tern.
Wildfowl and Waders
Teal are already beginning to increase slowly with eight birds logged while waders included 100 Sanderling.
Moths
White Colon – a local speciality, Large Yellow Underwing and Tawny Shears are now newly emerged.

A hint of late movement

Offshore
Morning observations provided little other than small numbers of Gannet.
Grounded Migrants
Another singing Reed Warbler was only recently arrived along with single Spotted Flycatcher and Robin.
Diurnal Migration
Three Swift and a Siskin were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A brood of 10 Tufted Duck was seen and waders included what appears to be a summering flock of 160 Bar-tailed Godwit.
Moths
A few Diamond-back Moth continue to be trapped nightly and newly emerged residents include Brimstone, Purple Bar, Heart and Dart, Marbled Minor, Flame Carpet and Shears.

Cormorant Control

7th June 2013 – bright and sunny SE1
Offshore
Morning observations provided little other than small numbers of Gannet, Sandwich Tern and Arctic Tern.
Grounded Migrants
A singing Reed Warbler was only recently arrived.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 800 Knot, 8 Grey Plover and 4 Sanderling along with a post-breeding flock of 30 Lapwing.
Ringing
A colour ringed Cormorant located on the western shore of the island on 31st May 2013 had been ringed as a nestling on 4th June 2012 at Stack Mooar, Maughold, Isle of Man. This is the fifth bird from this colony to appear on the shoreline around Walney Island.
Moths
The best catch of the year to date provided 160 moths of 32 species. Immigrants continue to be led by a few Diamond-back Moth while Brown Silver-line continues to be the most abundant species and newly emerged residents include Mottled Rustic, Pebble Prominent, Dog’s Tooth, Silver-ground Carpet, Common Carpet, Least Black Arches and Common Plume.

Out of season Little Gull

4th June 2013 – bright and sunny E1/2
Offshore
Morning observations provided little other than small numbers of Gannet, Manx Shearwater, Sandwich Tern and Guillemot. A first-summer Little Gull provided the highlight of the day.
Grounded Migrants
A singing Lesser Whitethroat was perhaps newly arrived.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow continue to arrive.
Moths
The best catch of the year to date provided 126 moths of 19 species. Immigrants again included several Diamond-back Moth while Red Twin-spot Carpet, Lime-speck Pug and Light Brown Apple Moth were new for the year amongst an exceptional 65 Brown Silver-line.

June doldrums

3rd June 2013 – overcast then sunny spells E1/2
Offshore
Just small numbers of Gannet, Common Tern and Sandwich Tern were logged.
Grounded Migrants
A Chiffchaff was the only potential candidate for a grounded migrant .
Wildfowl and Waders
Two Pink-footed Geese were out of season while waders included 1750 Knot, 1000 Oystercatcher and 195 Bar-tailed Godwit.
Moths
Several Diamond-back Moth were again attracted and Common Wave was new for the year amongst 47 Brown Silver-line.

First Eiderlings emerge

2nd June 2013 – bright and sunny W3
Offshore
Morning observations (0815-0915) produced 17 Common Scoter, 12 Gannet, 11 Sandwich Tern, 3 Manx Shearwater, 2 Red-throated Diver and 2 Kittiwake .
Grounded Migrants
Two Spotted Flycatcher were logged.
Diurnal Migration
House Martin and Swallow continue to trickle through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 2000 Knot.
Breeding Birds
The first Eiderlings are now beginning to emerge.

Seabirds on the move

1st June 2013 – bright and sunny NW3
Offshore
Morning observations on a falling tide (0730-0830) produced 90 Guillemot, 53 Common Scoter, 37 Gannet, 30 Sandwich Tern, 10 Manx Shearwater, 3 Razorbill, 2 Common Tern and a Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Single Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat and Spotted Flycatcher was all that could be mustered.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 14 House Martin were logged amongst a trickle of Swallow.
Moths
Several Diamond-back Moth were again attracted.
