Afew Teal and 2 Shoveler continue to linger and waders included 81 Whimbrel and a Greenshank.

The long-staying Hooded Crow remains in residence.
Ringing
A below par month saw just 266 birds of 19 species. Individual species totals were as follows (retraps in brackets): Willow Warbler 38, Blackcap 30, Chiffchaff 17, (1), Goldcrest 14 (2), Goldfinch 13 (71), Linnet 13 (14), Chaffinch 8 (1), Robin 3, Greenfinch 2 (7), Blackbird 2 (4), Dunnock 2 (4), Lesser Redpoll 2, Redstart 1, Great Tit 1, Woodpigeon 1 (1), Reed Bunting 1 (6), House Sparrow (4), Wren (2), Sparrowhawk (1).

Little Tern

27th April 2015 – bright and sunny SW4/5
Offshore
An early evening check of the sea on the rising tide (1600-1700) produced 200 Sandwich Tern and 7 Little Tern, along with 4 Guillemot, 3 Gannet, 2 Shag, 2 Razorbill and 2 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to 14 Wheatear.
Diurnal Migration
Swallow and Sand Martin continue to just trickle through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 1000 Dunlin and 8 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin was logged.

Hooded Crow hat-trick

26th April 2015 – bright and sunny NW3/4
Offshore
Sandwich Tern continue to dominate sightings early morning with 600 birds logged along with small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Common Scoter, Razorbill and Guillemot.
Grounded Migrants
Despite a cold start and a stiff northwest breeze there were a few grounded birds in evidence. At least 6 Grasshopper Warbler were in breeding habitat where the number of Lesser Whitethroat, Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler continue to increase slowly. Obvious migrants included 24 Wheatear, 5 Willow Warbler, 5 Blackcap, 2 Redstart and a White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
Swallow and Sand Martin continue to just trickle through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 23 Whimbrel and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
The long-staying Hooded Crow was joined by 2 additional birds and a Merlin was recorded.

Seabirds dominate

25th April 2015 – overcast then rain SW4
Offshore
Weather conditions were conducive to a prolonged seawatch with observations (0715-0915) producing totals of 530 Sandwich Tern, 169 Common Scoter, 105 Guillemot, 82 Gannet, 30 Razorbill, 25 Manx Shearwater, 20 Red-throated Diver, 10 Kittiwake, 7 Little Tern, 3 Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Fulmar and single Arctic Skua and a Goldeneye.
Diurnal Migration
A few Swallow trickled in off the sea.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 6 Whimbrel and a Black-tailed Godwit.

Déjà Vu

24th April 2015 – early mist then overcast/calm
Offshore
Sandwich Tern continue to dominate sightings over the sea early afternoon with 500 birds logged..
Grounded Migrants
More of the same with 18 Willow Warbler, 8 Blackcap, 6 Wheatear, 2 Chiffchaff and a Whinchat logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 1000 Knot, 180 Golden Plover, 4 Whimbrel and a Black-tailed Godwit.

Whinchat new for the year

23rd April 2015 – bright and sunny NW1/2
Offshore
Good numbers of Sandwich Tern remain offshore.
Grounded Migrants
Several Lesser Whitethroat have now arrived in breeding habitat, a Whinchat was amongst 19 Wheatear and 2 Blackcap amongst 12 Willow Warbler.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 3 Whimbrel and 2 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Raptors were prominent with Merlin, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk all logged.

More Blackcaps and Willow Warblers

22nd April 2015 – bright and sunny NW2
Offshore
Sandwich Tern continue to remain prominent offshore.
Grounded Migrants
Again Willow Warbler and Blackcap dominated sightings with 20 and 11 birds logged respectively, the only other evidence of grounded birds involved 2 Chiffchaff.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included Black-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper and Greenshank.
Moths
Hebrew Character was new for the year.

Spring continues to drag its heels

21st April 2015 – bright and sunny WNW2/3
Offshore
Sandwich Tern remain prominent offshore.
Grounded Migrants
A bit better than of late with 25 Willow Warbler, 5 Blackcap and a Chiffchaff logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included Ruff and Greenshank.
Moths
Early Grey and Double-striped Pug were new for the year.

Whimbrel, Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler

18th April 2015 – bright and sunny NE3
Offshore
Sandwich Tern continue to dominate sightings over the sea early morning with 390 birds logged. Also seen were 10 Common Scoter, 6 Shag, 3 Gannet and 2 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Although Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler had returned to breeding habitats the clear conditions at dawn failed to ground many migrants with just 12 Willow Warbler and 10 Wheatear logged.
Diurnal Migration
Iceland bound migrants involved 25 Pink-footed Geese and 3 Whooper Swan whilst a single Lesser Redpoll was amongst a further trickle of Swallow and Sand Martin.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first-winter drake Long-tailed Duck remains in residence and waders included 440 Golden Plover, 21 Whimbrel, 12 Purple Sandpiper, 6 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Ruff and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least two Little Egret continue to linger and the long-staying Hooded Crow was logged.
Moths
Red Sword-grass was the only attraction to the moth trap.

Reeling Grasshopper Warbler

17th April 2015 – sunny spells NE1/2
Offshore
Early morning observations (0645-0745) produced 141 Common Scoter, 14 Sandwich Tern, 3 Red-throated Diver and 2 Razorbill.
Grounded Migrants
The first Grasshopper Warbler was reeling and additional sightings included 28 Wheatear, 15 White Wagtail, 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Blackcap and a Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 125 Pink-footed Geese headed north while Swallow, Meadow Pipit and Pied Wagtail trickled through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first-winter drake Long-tailed Duck remains in residence and waders included 4 Ruff and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least two Little Egret continue to linger.
Moths
Powdered Quaker was the only attraction to the moth trap.

First House Martin of the year

16th April 2015 – sunny spells NW1/2
Grounded Migrants
Another small fall produced 27 Wheatear, 24 Willow Warbler, 14 Chiffchaff, 14 White Wagtail, 4 Blackcap and a single Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
The first 3 House Martin of the year flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first-winter drake Long-tailed Duck remains in residence and waders included 14 Purple Sandpiper and 4 Ruff.
Miscellaneous
At least one Little Egret continues to linger.

Wheatear and Blackcap fall

15th April 2015 – morning showers then sunny spells N3/4
Offshore
Good numbers of Sandwich Tern continue to congregate offshore.
Grounded Migrants
A small fall was evident with 25 Wheatear, 22 Blackcap, 10 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackbird, 2 Willow Warbler, 2 Goldcrest and a Robin logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first-winter drake Long-tailed Duck remains in residence and waders included 4 Ruff and 3 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
At least one Little Egret continues to linger.
Moths
Early Thorn was the sole attraction to the moth trap.

Ruff newly arrived

14th April 2015 – overcast SW4/5
Offshore
A flock of 300 Sandwich Tern were offshore on the evening tide along with 3 Red-throated Diver, 3 Razorbill, 2 Gannet and a Shag.
Grounded Migrants
Two Willow Warbler were the only evidence of grounded migrants.
Wildfowl and Waders
The long-staying first-winter Long-tailed Duck continues to linger and waders included 40 Golden Plover and the first 2 Ruff of the year.
Miscellaneous
At least 3 Little Egret remain.

First Common Sandpiper of the year

13th April 2015 – overcast S4
Offshore
A flock of 40 Sandwich Tern were offshore on the evening tide.
Grounded Migrants
Two Wheatear, 2 Goldcrest and single Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff were all that could be mustered.
Wildfowl and Waders
The long-staying first-winter Long-tailed Duck remains along with 15 dark-bellied Brent Goose. Waders included the first Common Sandpiper of the year, 450 Golden Plover, 5 Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 3 Little Egret remain and a flock of 70 Twite were recorded.

Weather causes fieldwork abandonment

12th April 2015 –rain SW8/9, sunny spells later
Offshore
An inhospitable day saw just 50 Common Scoter and small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Manx Shearwater, Gannet, Kittiwake, Sandwich Tern and Razorbill logged.
Grounded Migrants
A Wheatear was the only evidence.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first-winter drake Long-tailed Duck remained in residence and waders included 1000 Knot, 40 Ringed Plover and a Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A male Merlin hunted Linnets.
Moths
Common Quaker, Red Sword-grass and Early Thorn were the sole attractions to the moth trap.

Manx Shearwater, Fulmar and Arctic Skua

11th April 2015 – sunny spells after early rain W5
Offshore
A day for checking the sea, extended observations (0730-0930 & 1000-1100) revealed totals of 227 Common Scoter, 212 Gannet, 67 Sandwich Tern, 35 Red-throated Diver, 34 Razorbill, 14 Red-breasted Merganser, 10 Guillemot, 10 Kittiwake, 3 Shag, 3 Fulmar, 2 Manx Shearwater and an Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
Single Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Goldcrest were all that troubled the scorers.
Diurnal Migration
A few Meadow Pipit were coming in off the sea and a Sand Martin was seen.
Wildfowl and Waders
Two Black-tailed Godwit were recorded.

Ring Ouzel

10th April 2015 – sunny spells/murky/SSE3/4
Offshore
A flock of 32 Sandwich Tern were offshore.
Grounded Migrants
A fine Ring Ouzel was amongst a smattering of Wheatear. Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Two Sand Martin and a Swallow were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
A group of 30 pale-bellied Brent Geese were logged and waders included 100 Grey Plover and 70 Bar-tailed Godwit.

First Willow Warbler

9th April 2015 – sunny spells/murky/NW1
Offshore
The sea provided 10 Red-breasted Merganser, 4 Red-throated Diver, 3 Sandwich Tern and a Shag.
Grounded Migrants
The first Willow Warbler arrived with 5 birds logged along with 13 Chiffchaff, 2 Wheatear and a Goldcrest.
Diurnal Migration
Two Sand Martin and a Swallow were logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Only 3 dark-bellied Brent Geese were logged. Waders included 600 Golden Plover.

At least the fog cleared!

8th April 2015 – sunny spells/calm

The sea provided 5 Sandwich Tern, 3 Shag and 3 Red-throated Diver.
Grounded Migrants
Single Goldcrest and Chiffchaff was the sole evidence.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin and several Little Egret were the best of the rest.

First Swallow

7th April 2015 – fog/calm
Grounded Migrants
Limited to 4 Goldcrest and 3 Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
Two Swallow and a Sand Martin were seen despite the very poor visibility.

6th April 2015 – fog/calm
Grounded Migrants
An increase in sightings produced 32 Goldcrest, 2 Wheatear and a Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
Birds moving through the gloom included 100 Meadow Pipit, 10 Pied Wagtail, 4 Lesser Redpoll and 3 Fieldfare.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 77 pale-bellied and 40 dark-bellied birds. Waders included 3 Greenshank and 3 Black-tailed Godwit.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin and at least 3 Little Egret were recorded.

Whooper Swans appear through the fog

5th April 2015 – fog/calm
Grounded Migrants
Despite the seemingly promising conditions only 10 Goldcrest, 6 Chiffchaff and a Wheatear were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Meadow Pipit continue to move through in small numbers and a flock of 51 Whooper Swan appeared out of the gloom.
Wildfowl and Waders
A flock of 34 Purple Sandpiper were seen.

Low key migration continues

4th April 2015 – sunny spells NW1/2
Offshore
Sightings included 138 Common Scoter, 20 Red-throated Diver, 2 Gannet and a Kittiwake.
Grounded Migrants
A single Goldcrest was all that was logged.
Diurnal Migration
Meadow Pipit and Pied Wagtail continue to move through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 54 pale-bellied and 22 dark-bellied birds. Waders included 800 Golden Plover.

First Sand Martin of the year

3rd April 2015 – overcast/mist/drizzle SE1/2
Offshore
A group of 10 Shag fed close inshore on the morning rising tide.
Grounded Migrants
There was a slight increase in activity with 14 Goldcrest and 6 Chiffchaff logged.
Diurnal Migration
The first Sand Martin of the year was recorded. Early morning thrushes involved 18 Fieldfare and 3 Redwing before 100 Meadow Pipit and 6 Pied Wagtail flew through during the morning between the pulses of rain.
Wildfowl and Waders
The first-winter drake Long-tailed Duck and 5 Shoveler remain in residence along with a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 20 Twite remain along with several Little Egret.

Winter favourites continue to linger

1st April 2015 – overcast/rain later NW6/7
Offshore
A check over the sea late afternoon (1515-1615) revealed small numbers of Gannet, Kittiwake, Common Scoter, Red-throated Diver and Guillemot .
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 6 Shoveler, 4 pale-bellied Brent Geese and the long-staying Long-tailed Duck. Three Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Greenshank were the pick of the waders.
Miscellaneous
Several Little Egrets continue to linger and a Barn Owl hunted the island.
Ringing
March proved to be another quiet moth with migration seemingly on hold and a total of just 75 birds of 13 species handled. Individual species totals were as follows (retraps in brackets) Goldcrest 5, Blackbird 4, Blue Tit 4 (1), Chiffchaff 3, Chaffinch 3, Great Tit 2, Robin 2, Goldfinch 2 (38), Redwing 1, Sparrowhawk 1, Reed Bunting (5), Dunnock (3), House Sparrow (1).

The slow start to moth emergence continues though Dark Sword Grass and Common Quaker were new for the year
