Roof-top gull census

20th May 2019 – bright and sunny NW2/3
Offshore
Early morning (0630-0730) produced 150 Guillemot, 90 Sandwich Tern, 24 Gannet, 12 Common Scoter, 11 Manx Shearwater, 7 Puffin, 6 Razorbill and single Red-throated Diver and Fulmar.
Grounded Migrants
A Spotted Flycatcher and 2 Wheatear were the only migrant passerines logged.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 6 Whimbrel.
Breeding Birds
A census of the roof-top nesting gulls on urban Walney Island has revealed Herring Gull (76 pairs), Lesser Black-backed Gull (25 pairs) and Great Black-backed Gull (1 pair).
Butterflies and Moths
The moth trap held Lime-speck Pug while the first Dingy Skipper are now on the wing.
Breeding Birds
Roof top nesting Great Black-backed Gull, despite the deterrent measures in place!
