Non-avian highlight

16th August 2023 – bright and sunny N1
Offshore
Early morning observations over the sea (0600-0700) produced 140 Sandwich Tern, 110 Common Scoter, 18 Shag, 17 Arctic Tern, 10 Shelduck, 4 Arctic Skua, 2 Gannet and single Common Tern and Manx Shearwater.
Grounded Migrants
A few birds were again in evidence despite the clear conditions, sightings included 6 Whitethroat, 5 Willow Warbler, 3 Goldcrest, 3 Wheatear, 3 Stonechat, 2 Whinchat and single Sedge Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 100 Swallow, 12 Sand Martin, 8 House Martin, 8 Tree Pipit, 8 Tree Sparrow and a Grey Wagtail flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Sightings included 2 Whimbrel and single Black-tailed Godwit and Ruff.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow continues its residency and Little Egret are seemingly everywhere, significantly outnumbering the island’s Grey Heron population.
Dragonflies
The first Migrant Hawker are now on the wing, however, highlight of the day was the first island record of Lesser Emperor which appears to be only the third county record.
