Flocks of 800 Jackdaw, 30 Whooper Swan and 25 Pink-footed Goose flew through.
Miscellaneous
A Short-eared Owl hunted the island at dawn.

Single Hooded Crow and Water Rail were the best of the rest. The island “woodland” added 21 Long-tailed Tit, 10 Coal Tit and single Chiffchaff, Brambling and Mistle Thrush.

Early morning thrushes involved single Fieldfare and Mistle Thrush and 4 Redwing while additional grounded birds included 7 Goldcrest and a Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Totals through the morning included 2800 Jackdaw, 400 Pink-footed Goose, 62 Whooper Swan, 36 Tree Sparrow, 27 Chaffinch, 22 Long-tailed Tit, 16 Meadow Pipit, 4 Coal Tit, 3 Brambling and 2 Stock Dove.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Pintail flock has increased to 260 birds.
Miscellaneous
Two Water Rail and a Merlin were the best of the rest.

A scan of the eastern shore revealed 3 Great Crested Grebe.

Early morning thrushes involved 3 Song Thrush and single Fieldfare and Redwing while additional grounded birds included 9 Goldcrest, 8 Stonechat and a Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 175 Pink-footed Goose, 120 Jackdaw, 25 Redpoll, 10 Chaffinch, 9 Whooper Swan and single Brambling, Siskin and Stock Dove flew through.

Early morning thrushes involved 4 Fieldfare and 2 Redwing while additional newly grounded birds included 12 Goldcrest, 4 Stonechat, 4 Coal Tit, 3 Blackcap and a Chiffchaff.

Single Siskin and Redpoll flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
A Shoveler was amongst 60 Mallard.
Miscellaneous
Single Merlin, Peregrine and Hooded Crow were the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
Migrants in the light trap involved Rusty Dot Pearl, Pearly Underwing, Dark Swordgrass and Silver Y.

A bit of a late autumn feel to sightings

20th October 2025 – overcast ESE2/3
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0800-0900) revealed 65 Razorbill, 43 Common Scoter, 16 Gannet, 12 Shag, 3 Red-throated Diver and 3 Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
The Cetti’s Warbler remains and newly grounded birds included 7 Coal Tit, 6 Goldcrest, 4 Redwing and 2 Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
Totals through the morning had a late autumn feel and included 530 Jackdaw, 465 Starling, 100 Meadow Pipit, 2 Redpoll, 2 Siskin and a Grey Wagtail.
Wildfowl and Waders
A flock of 220 Pintail were logged.
Miscellaneous
Two Water Rail, single Merlin and the long-staying Hooded Crow were the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
Attractions to the light trap overnight included Rusty Dot Pearl.

Latish Sandwich Terns

19th October 2025 – overcast/rain later ESE4/5
Offshore
Observations over the sea (0800-1000) revealed 190 Razorbill, 180 Common Scoter, 105 Gannet, 37 Shag, 9 Guillemot, 6 Red-breasted Merganser and 2 Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Early morning thrushes involved 3 Redwing and a Fieldfare while additional newly grounded birds were limited to single Goldcrest and Chiffchaff.
Diurnal Migration
A group of 14 Swallow flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 300 light-bellied birds and 180 Pintail and 5 Pink-footed Geese were seen. Waders included 18 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
Two Merlin were the best of the rest.
Butterflies and Moths
The light trap held 33 moths of 12 species with Large Wainscot the dominant species while migrants involved Silver Y and Rusty Dot Pearl.

Totals through the morning included 160 Linnet, 75 Meadow Pipit, 60 Jackdaw, 55 Chaffinch, 50 Pink-footed Goose, 35 Tree Sparrow, 23 Redpoll, 23 Siskin, 20 Skylark, 18 Pied Wagtail, 4 Swallow, 2 Brambling, 2 Grey Wagtail and a House Martin.

A single female Pochard – the first since 11th March 2022 and a female Scaup were both newly arrived.

A Marsh Harrier, 2 Merlin and single Water Rail and Hooded Crow were the best of the rest.

Migrants in the light trap were limited to a Rusty Dot Pearl.

Early morning thrushes involved 30 Redwing, 15 Blackbird and 5 Fieldfare while additional newly grounded birds included 10 Coal Tit, 10 Goldcrest, 6 Stonechat, 3 Chiffchaff and singles of Blackcap and Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 200 Redwing, 60 Chaffinch, 50 Pink-footed Goose, 20 Fieldfare, 20 Redpoll, 8 Siskin, 4 Tree Sparrow and 4 Swallow flew through.
Miscellaneous
A Merlin was the best of the rest while the island’s “woodland” added a further 90 Redwing and 65 Fieldfare.

First Fieldfare and Brambling of autumn

Early morning thrushes involved 20 Redwing and a Fieldfare while additional newly grounded birds included 80 Coal Tit, 23 Goldcrest, 16 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Stonechat and a Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 120 Redwing, 80 Pink-footed Goose, 22 Fieldfare, 10 Chaffinch, 6 Siskin, 2 Mistle Thrush, 2 Swallow, 2 Brambling and a Great Spotted Woodpecker flew through.

The Hooded Crow and 2 Raven were the best of the rest.

A scan of the sea revealed just 25 Shag.

The Cetti’s Warbler remains and newly grounded birds included 14 Goldcrest, 7 Chiffchaff and 5 Stonechat.

Totals included 50 Chaffinch, 30 Pink-footed Goose 19 Redpoll, 6 Siskin, 4 Coal Tit and a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

At least 7 Greenshank remain.

One of the Whooper Swans moving through was originally colour-marked at Martin Mere, Lancashire on 5th March 2024.

Early morning thrushes involved 2 Redwing and a Song Thrush while additional newly grounded birds included 5 Goldcrest, 3 Chiffchaff and single Treecreeper – a different bird to yesterday and White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
Totals of 280 Jackdaw, 60 Chaffinch, 30 Meadow Pipit, 12 Swallow, 10 Redpoll, 10 Tree Sparrow, 7 Siskin, 6 Coal Tit and single House Martin and Grey Wagtail flew through.
Miscellaneous
Single Short-eared Owl and Barn Owl were seen and three Water Rail were the best of the rest.

Totals through the morning included 250 Pink-footed Goose, 34 Chaffinch, 34 Meadow Pipit, 31 Skylark, 14 Siskin, 14 Pied Wagtail, 10 Redpoll, 7 Swallow and 3 Reed Bunting.

A late Yellow Wagtail was recorded and totals of 135 Skylark, 25 Chaffinch, 22 Tree Sparrow, 19 Coal Tit, 6 Siskin and 5 Redpoll flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 330 light-bellied birds.

Diurnal Migration
Totals through the morning included 272 Chaffinch, 63 Goldfinch, 55 Meadow Pipit, 43 Coal Tit, 42 Greenfinch, 40 Skylark, 24 Reed Bunting, 11 Whooper Swan, 10 Tree Sparrow, 10 Siskin, 7 Redpoll and a Swallow.

Butterflies involved Wall Brown, Small White, Red Admiral and Painted Lady while the light trap held a Figure of Eight – the first of the year.

Observations over the sea (0730-0930) revealed 104 Common Scoter, 34 Shag, 12 Razorbill, 12 Great Crested Grebe, 9 Gannet, 3 Mediterranean Gull and single Velvet Scoter and Red-throated Diver.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 17 Whooper Swan flew through.
Wildfowl and Waders
Wildfowl included 760 Teal, 527 Wigeon, 307 light-bellied Brent Goose, 81 Mallard, 47 Shelduck, 30 Pintail and Shoveler while waders included 4370 Oystercatcher, 1210 Redshank, 495 Curlew, 385 Turnstone, 258 Lapwing, 164 Sanderling, 135 Golden Plover and 15 Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
At least 54 Little Egret and 18 Grey Heron were along the eastern shore.

Totals included 55 Coal Tit, 15 Chaffinch, 12 Redpoll and 2 Siskin.
Wildfowl and Waders
Waders included 14 Greenshank.

Despite the recent inclement weather, Red Admiral, Large White and Wall remain on the wing.

Whooper Swans move through

Observations over the sea (0800-1000) revealed 23 Common Scoter, 17 Razorbill, 14 Shag, 7 Guillemot, 3 Kittiwake and single Red-throated Diver, Fulmar and Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
A group of 10 Coal Tit were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Totals included 54 Whooper Swan, 11 Swallow, 5 Siskin and a Redpoll were recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The Brent Goose flock held 224 light-bellied birds and 10 Pintail were seen.

A Merlin hunted passerines migrating over the sea.

Coal Tits were again on the move with 50 birds logged.
