Earliest ever Grasshopper Warbler

11th April 2010 – overcast start clearing to hazy sun E1
Offshore
Early morning observations provided just small numbers of Red-throated Diver, Gannet, Common Scoter and Sandwich Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Although the earliest ever Grasshopper Warbler was recorded additional summer migrants remain thin on the ground with just 10 Wheatear, 6 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff and a Blackcap logged along with a late Fieldfare.
Diurnal Migration
Disappointing considering the conditions early morning with just 8 Sand Martin, 3 Lesser Redpoll, 2 White Wagtail and a Tree Sparrow recorded.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall continue to linger amongst small numbers of Teal and Wigeon and 3 Goldeneye. Waders included 3 Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank.
Miscellaneous
A Short-eared Owl hunted over the island in the evening and both Barn and Little Owl were also seen.
Moths
Catches in the moth trap are now starting to increase with Emmelina mondactyla, Early Thorn and Powdered Quaker all new for the year.
