Two Spotted Flycatcher were newly arrived.

A Spotted Flycatcher was logged.

Some more late movement saw 2 House Martin and a Lesser Redpoll logged.

Known for their mimicry, one of the territorial Reed Warblers is giving a passable vocal representation of a Heron as part of its repertoire.

Three Spotted Flycatcher and single Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff were logged.
Diurnal Migration
Some late movement saw a Swift amongst 39 House Martin.

Waders included 130 Sanderling, 10 Dunlin and 6 Turnstone.

Territorial Meadow Pipit are now well represented across the island.

The long-staying Hooded Crow remains and a female Marsh Harrier hunted the island’s sizeable rabbit population.

Overnight attractions to the light trap involved 156 moths of 27 species and were dominated by 73 Treble Lines but also included Nutmeg, Rustic and Mottled Rustic, all new for the year.

Early morning observations (0630-0730) revealed 1557 Common Scoter, 190 Sandwich Tern, 103 Guillemot, 37 Gannet, 8 Razorbill, 6 Kittiwake, 3 Red-throated Diver, 2 Red-breasted Merganser and a Velvet Scoter.

Two Wheatear and 2 Spotted Flycatcher were logged.

Breeding waders involve Oystercatcher, Lapwing and Ringed Plover.

Hoopoe surprise

A Hoopoe was an early morning surprise as it fed avidly and then dust-bathed amongst the sand-dunes at the south end to at least 1030hrs.

An early morning seawatch (0615-0715) produced 120 Sandwich Tern, 42 Gannet, 26 Guillemot, 11 Common Scoter, 8 Manx Shearwater, 7 Red-throated Diver, 5 Little Tern and single Fulmar and Red-breasted Merganser.
Grounded Migrants
Five Wheatear were recorded.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 110 Pink-footed Geese flew north.
Wildfowl and Waders
A few Whimbrel continue to roam the island.

Reed Warbler are now holding territory at two locations on the island.

Same conditions but the early morning seawatch (0615-0815) proved to be less profitable than yesterday with 235 Sandwich Tern, 108 Common Scoter, 108 Guillemot, 57 Manx Shearwater, 38 Kittiwake, 19 Gannet, 11 Red-throated Diver, 4 Razorbill and a Little Tern logged.

Single Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff were recorded.

A pair of Tufted Duck were recently arrived.

An extended early morning seawatch (0600-0900) proved to be very profitable with 535 Sandwich Tern, 470 Common Scoter, 410 Manx Shearwater, 205 Guillemot, 160 Kittiwake 58 Gannet, 25 Red-throated Diver, 18 Puffin, 18 Razorbill, 7 Red-breasted Merganser, 7 Arctic Skua (4 dark, 3 pale) and single Arctic Tern, Fulmar and Great Northern Diver logged.

A trickle of Swallow flew through.

A late Pintail was seen and waders included 300 Knot, 14 Bar-tailed Godwit and a Whimbrel.

An early scan of the sea, before the weather closed in, produced 40 Sandwich Tern, 20 Gannet, 8 Shag, 4 Red-throated Diver, 3 Arctic Tern, 2 Kittiwake and single Arctic Skua and Manx Shearwater. Later observations added 3 Velvet Scoter and 100 Common Scoter moving into the bay.

Limited to 4 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Willow Warbler, 2 Blackcap, 2 Wheatear and single Spotted Flycatcher and Robin.

A scan of the sea produced 30 Sandwich Tern, 29 Gannet, 8 Shag, 8 Common Scoter, 2 Little Tern and single Red-breasted Merganser, Razorbill and Arctic Skua.
Grounded Migrants
Limited to 10 Wheatear, 5 Willow Warbler 3 Blackcap and single Whinchat and Spotted Flycatcher – the latter the first of the year.
Diurnal Migration
A Tree Pipit flew through and 2 Hooded Crow were amongst a light corvid passage.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall remain and a late Goldeneye appeared, waders included 62 Whimbrel.
Miscellaneous
The resident Hooded Crow remains and 3 Raven were the best of the rest.

Small Copper and Clouded Border are now on the wing.

A noticeable influx of Sedge Warbler saw 14 birds logged, also seen were 5 Whitethroat, 5 Wheatear, 2 Willow Warbler and a Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
A flock of 50 Pink-footed Geese headed north.
Wildfowl and Waders
The pair of Gadwall remained.
Miscellaneous
The Hooded Crow remains and a Peregrine was the best of the rest.

Pomarine Skua

2nd May 2023 – overcast/hazy ESE2/3
Offshore
An early morning check of the sea on the rising tide (0630-0730) was highlighted by a Pomarine Skua heading out of the bay. Also seen were 191 Common Scoter, 92 Sandwich Tern, 32 Gannet, 20 Guillemot, 9 Red-throated Diver, 5 Manx Shearwater, 2 Arctic Skua, 2 Shag, 2 Kittiwake and single Puffin and Arctic Tern.
Grounded Migrants
Wheatear continue to dominate with 26 birds logged, including the leucistic bird, along with 4 Blackcap, 3 Willow Warbler and single Whinchat and White Wagtail.
Diurnal Migration
A total of 200 Pink-footed Geese headed north in two flocks.
Wildfowl and Waders
A pair of Gadwall were newly arrived and waders included 2130 Dunlin, 80 Sanderling, 22 Whimbrel and a Black-tailed Godwit.

Three Reed Warbler continue to hold territory.

The light trap attracted the first Brimstone Moth of the year and a Dark Tussock caterpillar was seen.

An early morning check of the sea on the rising tide (0630-0800) revealed 525 Common Scoter, 143 Sandwich Tern, 50 Gannet, 36 Red-throated Diver, 31 Kittiwake, 21 Guillemot, 19 Manx Shearwater, 4 Red-breasted Merganser, 4 Velvet Scoter, 3 Puffin, 3 Arctic Tern, 2 Little Tern and a Shag.

Wheatear continue to dominate with 22 birds logged, including the leucistic bird along with 2 Willow Warbler and a Blackcap.
Diurnal Migration
Three Lesser Redpoll, 2 Tree Pipit and a House Martin were recorded.
